Rahm Emanuel: Obama's Chief Of Staff (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/10/27/obamas-chief-of-staff-rah_n_138240.html)

Hard-charging Illinois Rep. Rahm Emanuel (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/news/rahm-emanuel) has accepted the job of chief of staff under Barack Obama, Democratic sources told the Huffington Post. Emanuel called Speaker Nancy Pelosi early on Thursday to inform her of the decision, according to NBC, and the move is expected to be officially announced today.
Politico notes (http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1108/15371.html):The announcement will send a signal that Obama is eager to work with Congress, and plans a swift launch of an aggressive agenda that will focus on the economy, taxes, energy, education and health care.
"The chief" is sometimes known as the second most powerful person in Washington. The job has vast authority, as the boss of the hundreds of aides who work directly for the president, a public face of the administration on television, and a negotiator and salesman on Capitol Hill.
The appointment was the first Obama offered after his election, and Emanuel pondered the opportunity for about 24 hours. Friends said Emanuel accepted the job because he thought it was important to serve this historic administration despite the potential strain on his wife, Amy Rule, and their three children, who live in the Chicago area.
At 49, Emanuel is two years older than his new boss.

I don't remember the specifics but I heard on MSNBC from an unnamed source who wishes to be anonymous that Rahm Emanuel was the one who ordered Vince Fosters death. When Hillary said she did not want to do it he did it himself.

he reportedly told British Prime Minister (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prime_Minister_of_the_United_Kingdom) Tony Blair (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_Blair), prior to Blair appearing in public with Clinton for the first time after the Lewinsky scandal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lewinsky_scandal), "This is important. On Election Night, 10 minutes after CNN called the House for the Democrats, Emanuel climbed up on a table in DCCC headquarters and addressed his cheering, victory-starved staff, celebrating the party's biggest win since 1992. He wanted to wrap up the campaign with a message for the Republicans. "Since my kids are gone, I can say it," he shouted. "They can go #### themselves!"

For his bipartisan abilities?

Not specifically for that.

More for his aggressive style and ability to keep the White House's priorities (and it's staff) focussed. He definitely won't be a wishy-washy yes-man, and should do a good job of keeping Pelosi and Reid from thinking they might be able to exert any undue pressure on Obama to pass a bunch of superfluous crap.

Plus, he's been around the White House before and knows the ropes, so that experience will certainly benefit Obama.

I wouldn't be surprised if Obama appoints one or two Republicans to his administration, so there's plenty of room for proof of his bi-partisan intentions.

One shouldn't expect him to pick an "ambassador to the Right" as his Chief of Staff. As with his pick for VP, I like that Obama is picking highly qualified people with strength and experience to surround himself with.

Rahm don't play . . . and when he does play, he plays for keeps.

Good choice if you wanna get things done. That's the exact kind of fighter Barack ought to have helping him run the DC circus. Rahm has been given some credit for crushing the PUMA movement, and if that credit is due then COS is the perfect roll for him. It's a very partisan position, and there is nothing "figurehead" about it.

Nice pick.

While I'm sure he's not disappointed to be VP, I think the reason that he initially said he wasn't interested in a VP slot is that he was hoping for Sec. of State.

He would've loved that job, I'm sure.
