OMG! I think we're in worse trouble than I thought with our government. I took a look at this website because I'm curious. I clicked on the link to the "Transition Directory", expecting (naively I'm sure) to find names and info for the Transition Team. Oh, no! What I found under the "appointees" menu link was a list of three publications, the "Plum book", the "Prune book", and "Who's Who". The Plum book is a list of positions available for Presidential appointment (the plums or rewards for faithful followers, I guess, as it doesn't really seem to be referring to the color of the cover of the book). The Prune book is about how appointees can manage their employees in civil service (I guess they're prunes because they might not be totally happy with their bosses changing every 4 years based on who the Prez owes favors to) and Who's Who is a list of who is currently who. At first I thought it was a joke -- I mean, come on, plums & prunes????? But no, they're serious!

Only in America! Excuse me while I go knock the last bit of rose-colored glass out of my glasses and then head off somewhere for a nice stiff Irish whiskey. Wonder if I can talk my Mom into getting her Irish dual citizenship so I can have it too?

Don't take my word for it, check it out yourselves!

Presidential Transition Team (http://directory.presidentialtransition.gov/PTT-LeadershipPositions.cfm)Actually, the documents you're refering to are printed by the GPO after each election. This is not an Obama thing.. If you had clicked the links, you would see versions from both of W's elections and Bill's last election.

Plum Book: Main Page (http://www.gpoaccess.gov/plumbook/index.html)

Every four years, just after the Presidential election, the United States Government Policy and Supporting Positions, commonly known as the Plum Book, is published, alternately, by the Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs and the House Committee on Government Reform. The Plum Book is used to identify presidentially appointed positions within the Federal Government.

I DID click the links! That's why I commented that we were in worse shape than I thought. Apparently this publication has been out for more than one administration. I just found it disturbing that there was a need for these types of publications. Please do not assume that I am saying that it's an Obama thing just because I found it through his webpage.

But why do these publication make you feel that we're worse off? Even the smartest person can't remember each and every one of the thousands of appointments that need to be made. This is reference material. Every govt operation has reference material, SOPs, etc.

Hopefully, I can explain this. True "reference" materials tend to have serious-sounding names, especially those associated with government. It is the "plums" and "prunes" piece that has me shaking my head in amazement. Had the one resource been entitled something like, "Resource Manual for Presidential Appointments", I would not be so disgusted. To come right out and call it "Plum", even though that is what it is (a "plum" to be awarded to faithful followers) is just offensive to me. Let us at least maintain the facade that these jobs are important ones that our tax dollars should be paying someone to do. It's just too "in your face" for my liking. And if these titles are just someone's idea of "humor", it is seriously misplaced. Hopefully, this clarifies my point of view further.

I have to wonder if they're really going to use this for candidates to top positions. It seems like the database would get totally flooded with unqualified people, leaving those who are like a needle in a haystack.

Some feel the need to defend Obama even when he's not criticized. Don't worry, the glaze from their eyes will fall shortly.

We've seen worse, so just shake it off.

Consider the source. :killingme
