What I do is use the scanning tool here:

Memory upgrades, flash media, and usb storage at Crucial.com (http://www.crucial.com/)

and figure out what you need. Then you can buy used memory on eBay for about 1/2 or 2/3 what you'll pay at Best Buy. Be very careful, though, when buying on eBay; there's about a million variations of memory and you'll need precisely the one that works in your system. Check all the details before you bid/buy!

Make sure you get the right kind. DDR won't fit in a DDR-2 slot, And yes, people have tried that before.

If it's not an ancient PC, yes, you can buy locally. However, you will probably get the best price on-line.

Absolutely buy it online. You can more than likely get it for half the price as Worst Buy is selling it for.

Thanks for all the advice. The intel motherboard I have uses 168-pin memory. While still available, I've only seen it online. The board will support up to 3GB of ram, so I'm going to load up. Unfortunately, the biggest sticks I've seen at newegg are 512MB sticks, so it looks like I won't be able to max out. I'm trying to run Fallout 3 without having to pop for another machine. The computer I'm currently posting on (wife's) will run the game, though slowly. This one has a dual core processor, where mine doesn't. Maybe I'll load both machines with memory and swap with her.

Wonder if she'll notice?
