Merry Christmas to all! My first question is what does everyone think of the Sony Vaio laptop? I am really a Dell person but I believe they were out so my mom got me a Sony. I don't know anything about them so just wondering what people have heard or dealt with.
My second question is going to be my hardest to deal with probably. All my Itunes music is on my brothers laptop and I need to get it on mine now. I have about 600 or so songs and a few videos. I really don't feel like making cd's of everything because I will have to rename everything again on the new computer. How do I get everything from my brothers computer to mine the easiest way?

Thumb drives,(greatest invention since the microwave oven) or if card reader available use that, SD cards from a digital camera work great 1 gb or better should take care of it and you can delete from both when you are done.

Sony Vaio's are ok. You have to remember though, it's a Sony. It's the most moody product on the market next to Windows/Microsoft products.
As said before, thumb drives will snatch your music.

Me too Dell doesn't seem to be near as reliable as they used to be. I love my HP TouchSmart. It's seems to be the best PC I have ever owned!

Nothing wrong with Sony's other than the annoying software installed at purchase.

I think they wrote this for you today:

I like HP, but wait till you talk to their tech support in India.

After a very long wait recently the B#### says to me: "you sound like you're very far away, I think you have a phone problem." I could barely hear her either.

I say: "Oh really, were are you?"

She says: "I'm in India!"

I say: "Guess what?" You are FAR AWAY!!!"

For a fee! :duh: Dell has pissed me off so bad that I would throw a huge party if they went belly up.

thumbdrives? sorry you lost me, are you talking about the usb things that store information? SD card? lost me again. I trust that you know what your talking about but its a language I don't know. If I do use one of those thumbdrives will it carry the names of music and artists with the files, thats what I am scared of most. I really don't want to spend a day renaming everything. If I have to than ok, I am VERY greatfull for the gift.
I really like sony products, I have found that it is great quailty, IMO. I just figured they were good for tv's and media stuff, I really like dell. I do know what everyone is talking about as far as talking to India. I spend half of my work day talking to Bob from India, I want to drive off a cliff by the end of the day.

Not sure if you have a Home Network or not, but if you do another way to do it would be set up a share on bro's computer and map to the share and then drag and drop the files you want to copy to a folder on your new computer.

This sounds great, all I know is I am at my parents they have cable wireless internet. What is Home Network? Are you saying if my brother turns his PC on we can link together somehow?

I love my Ipod can't live without it but it is a huge headache sometimes. Why can you only snyc your ipod to one library, well I kinda understand that answer. With technology today I would think that a new library could upload whats on my current ipod.

This is a thumbdrive.

Exactly, place it in your usb port (first time it will look for driver info and then say devise is ready to use) . If nothing else happens go to MY Computer look for at the drives available. it should be the last one listed. double click to see what is on it. If windows XP, open the folder that contains the Items listed and select the ones to transfer. Select Copy or Move to folder. it will ask you where to, select the drive letter of your thumbnail. If Vista you will have to open folder, select items, cut or copy, go to my computer, open drive letter of the thumbnail and paste. then plug into other computer, let it do its thing and then reverse the process to transfer to other computer, careful where you place the items so you can find them later

I just gotta ask. How the heck do you own a computer and not know what these things are? I swear they need to start insisting on people to take a basic computer course before buying a computer. Computer's are not disposable and must be maintained and if you don't know what a thumb drive is or a SD card is, frankly you don't need to own a computer. How are you going to do basic maintenance on that machine if you don't know what these things are? SCARY!

I just gotta ask... do you have a life other than computers. I knew what a thumbdrive was but never heard it called that, I just always called it a usb memory stick. I have used them multiple times. SD card I am guessing is the memory stick also for a camra? I have a digital camara and have printed pictures at walmart or other places. Can I use a computer and other techy things, somewhat. I just don't know proper names or techy names for things. I can use microsoft office and other software. I work on a computer all day at work but only pay attention to what I have to know. I love my ipod which I am not the only person who agrees is not very user friendly at first, once I learned to use it I was good but it took an hour or two. I hate to tell you but it is a computer not a child. If I have problems I will ask the IT guys at work or find some more techy friends that can help me.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions my brother and I tried the thumbdrive idea and home network. We couldn't get either to work and my brother is pretty good with the computer stuff. Oh well but thanks.

You don't need to know what a thumbdrive is. It's not essential in basic operations of your computer. If I started a basic computer course (Windows, of course), it would cover the following, in no particular order:

Removing Microsoft junk
Learning to use a browser other than Internet Explorer
Removing preloaded junk
Learning the inside of your computer
Removing more preloaded junk
Knowing and understanding spyware, viruses and trojans
Learn to diagnose basic problems

i will agree i should probably pay more attention to the IT guys at work but when they start talking all i hear is blah, blah, blah. Not because it isn't interesting i just don't understand the terminology and am to busy watching them drool over computers.

New problem now. I brought my sons PS3 to my moms because i figured he would get a new game. I don't have a hdtv, my mom does. When my brother hooked the hd cable up to the ps3 it had to update settings or whatever. well i brought it home and it wont boot up, turns on but no ps3 screen comes up. the cable stays on, i am guessing i should have reset the settings before i left. so now i think i have to bring it to a friends house that has a hd cable and reset the settings. I dont know but this is my most logical guess.

I think the reason me and my grandma get along so well is because we are both in the stone ages, lost in technology. What a shame, i am too young to compare myself to an 85 year old. oh well.

Keep trying to turn it on and off. PS3's probably can't be moved a whole lot due to the internal storage they carry. If all else fails, call Sony for assistance at 800-345-7669 M-SAT 6:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. PST and Sunday 7:00 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. If you don't want to call, you can always get in touch with them here (http://www.us.playstation.com/Corporate/ConsumerServices).

If you don't know basic names of accessories for computer "thingy's" then you just have no business owning a computer. There is way too much upkeep for a computer and you need some kind of knowledge of what you are messing with. I just thank God they don't sell bombs to every one!

It's "input" and If you go on the internet you will catch viruses and get spyware and your computer will start to malfunction and this will all take less than a month and you will end up losing everything on your computer. My Dell XPS notebook fried itself due to the NVidia video card. Seems to be a common problem that Dell is aware of but doesn't seem inclined to do much about.

My Gen 2 did the same. They replaced everything in it.

1st. Tech came to the house and replaced the motherboard and graphics card.

2nd. Same tech came back and replaced RAM, display, keyboard.

3rd. I sent it back to Dell for a benchtop diagnostics.

4th Same tech came again to replace damn near everything in it.

5th. Dell sent me a new Hard Drive.

6th. Same tech comes to the house. Says screw it and calls Dell, tells them customer is pizzed and requests new laptop. Hands phone to me an they read me off some dispatch number and proceed to tell me the new laptop will be hear in 8-10 business days.

Anyway. They replaced the older Gen 2 with a brand new M1730 that is loads better.

I can't complain to much about all this as I bought the thing 4 years ago and ended up getting a free replacement. This whole deal did take about 1.5 months to get through to where I was happy though.

Did you have the extended warranty or did they just replace it because they knew it was a known problem? I haven't had much luck, but I'd definitely try again if there was any amount of hope getting the problem fixed without it costing me a small fortune.

Did you have the extended warranty or did they just replace it because they knew it was a known problem? I haven't had much luck, but I'd definitely try again if there was any amount of hope getting the problem fixed without it costing me a small fortune.

Neither have I, I am basically sitting here with a 5 month old piece of shiat that they sent me as a replacement for my original. I said screw it and just bought an HP. I will NEVER buy another Dell again! $4000.00 down the drain!

I paid 1500.00 for this one, that is not insane considering it is a touchscreen and has 4GB of memory, 64 bit Vista and a 500GB hard drive. Many other options, like the fact that it is 22" and can be used as a tv also. Nice machine.

One other way to do this would be to get an external hard drive for backups. You should have one anyway. Backup your music and then you can copy it to your new computer.
Then keep backing up anything new that you get.

I wouldn't bet on that. My Gen 2 was $3800.00 and with the warranty I bought it came out to $4,600.00.

But it was bought about a month after Dell started coming out with the XPS line back in '06. They were all high back then. I think they had just bought out Alienware.

I really don't have any major hangups with Dell. But I learned to get the Warranty where they come to your house on the same day you call. It's expensive and you had better hope you have extra PCs for backup. But when the tech calls them and requests a replacement, they don't quibble about it.

Unfortunately for me my situation has changed to where I really don't have allot of need for High End laptops anymoreso I don't see any brand new ones for myself anytime in the near future. Desktops.....

Well, I wouldn't have went with this one but the touchscreen was cool! I also liked the size of the screen and the fact that it is all built into the screen. I only have to deal with the keyboard and mouse and it was something I could have in my room and not have it interfer with other things. I am not a serious gamer anymore so therefore didn't really need the gaming aspect of the machine, but I was used to the speed so I had to have that 4GB of RAM and the 500 GB hard drive was a turn on as well. This computer screams compaired to my XPS and it makes me sick that I got shafted so hard. I didn't look to buy another one for a long time after I bought that XPS but it was so totally unreliable that I had to just give in and get a different computer.

I don't like my screen dirty either, I use a stylus. Any one will work, and I can also use my fingernail to touch the things I want open and stuff. It's really cool. They only thing that literally "bugs" me is if any bug lands on the screen it will close out windows and stuff. I have asked if there is a way to make the screen less sensitive and there is not. If you don't know basic names of accessories for computer "thingy's" then you just have no business owning a computer. There is way too much upkeep for a computer and you need some kind of knowledge of what you are messing with. I just thank God they don't sell bombs to every one!

Wait a ####ing minute. I work on a computer every day. I use mine at home every day. I am fairly good with them. Up until a month ago I had no idea what a thumb drive was. I've never had use for one until now. I called it the USB memory stick thingy until a coworker corrected me.

You should be able to log into your Itunes online account and redownload them into anything Ipod you wish. I have downloaded the same, purchased, songs into two separate Ipods with no troubles.

And you would have likely been better of posting that under it's own thread. Might not have gotten lost in the shuffle in here.

You enjoy your computer for as long as it will last. I think you should find out what an external hard drive is and find out how to back up your stuff. Or like I said you will find yourself in a pickle soon.

Sometimes having someone who is familiar with the devices give you a quick demo is the best way to go. I know several people who have issues with technology. They all own computers, cameras, Ipods and cell phones. I wonder sometimes how they manage to turn the things on. Their not stupid, its mostly fear that they are going to damage something ( get calls every now and then when one of them gets a new toy and can't figure it out). Its usually something simple to fix if you have already done it or something similar before. Its hard to believe the thumbnail idea didn't work, I use them all the time for transferring files between computers. although the program that makes the files or one that is compatible has to be on all the computers.

$2000.00 is still insanely high for a gaming machine. What witch doctors are selling you potions?

The dual core quad custom laptops seem to be the high priced ones. Not that I would ever buy one. My Dell XPS laptop is just fine.

Then don't call yourself a computer nerd until you know everything there is to know about a computer. Just like you know people that will shut this forum down, yeah right, like that would ever happen. If I were you I'd be embarrassed to come back on her after the crap you spewed when you demanded your account be deleted.

Yeah, like no one else has ever flipped their lid on this forum. Don't give me this holier than thou crap. I ain't fallen for it. I do know A LOT about computers, but I do not know how to build one from the ground up. I am not that far off from learning that. Seems simple enough. If I can replace parts, It doesn't seem to be that much harder to build one.

I have no clue what I ever did to you people, other than my temper tantrum, (like no one else has ever had one) to deserve the way I get treated. So if you want me to be an ass and a pain in one that is what I'll be. If you want my help I am happy to lend a hand. I am no saint and never claimed to be one. But I am a good person, till you piss me off that is!

What about the statement you made that you would have the forums shut down, that you "know people and can make it happen". If you hate it here so much that you want to have it shut down, then why come back?

I haven't seen too many people on here flip out like you did.

I already said I am human and I tend to say stupid shiat when I am pissed. I was getting bombarded with emails from Inkpen blaming me for something I didn't do and it was making me crazy. So I lost my temper. I have apologized and it did no good. I don't know what to tell you, I am human, I am fallible. I admitted to being wrong for what I did to no avail. I can't possibly say anymore to make it better. I tried.

Oh and we have discovered that when I take Darvocet I tend to get extremely cranky. Needless to say I only take it when I absolutely have to now.

- 6:30 p.m. If you don't want to call, you can always get in touch with them here (http://www.us.playstation.com/Corporate/ConsumerServices).

thanks for the phone number, i ended up calling them and got a very nice american man. If anyone ever has this issue... turn the system off with the switch on the back, place yor finger over the power button up front(dont press down just place lightly on top), turn the system back on with the switch in the back. Your will hear two beeps once you hear the second beep take your finger off the front power button, this will reset PS3 back to non HD settings. Again thanks for the number, i almost cried thinking it was broke.

Yeah I have a few friends who could proably help out, I just didnt want to bother anyone right after christmas and I am kinda impatient so I figured someone on the forum might be able to help. the suggestions i got will probably work if i could just figure out exactly how to do it. I went to ipod website and found my answer i think but its says i should have the music in mydocuments/mymusic/itunes (or something like that) as a backup. at that point i should be able to use the thumbnail to transfer but for some reason not all the music is in the backup location, only random songs. Also they say i can pull it off my ipod and onto the new computer... but only itunes purchases. Most of my music is from cds and other sources. pretty much i am realizing nothing comes easy, everyone wants to make money on everything. this is what it is, why make it so easy when they can have you buy more music or whatever. Not that i didnt know this before just frustrated when I have to deal with it. Oh well, maybe in a few days I will ask a friend for help.

I am sure you can be a very nice person but... your not always willing to lend a hand. I asked a IT question and got some very helpful tips from others but you ridiculed me for not knowing everything about a machine. I am too new to know what everyone is talking about you shutting down the forums. I know for a fact I have not done anything to you, you chose to come at me with attitude over something simple. So... you have not been sweet to me, or willing to lend a hand, and as far as shy I am guessing you are not because people on the forum seem to know alot about you. I am not trying to argue but maybe you need to learn to think before you type. Everyone has this problem sometimes and no one is perfect, but it sounds to me you do it frequently. This is just my opinion and maybe i am wrong but like I tell people who beg for second chances, you must prove you deserve it first.

My Dell XPS notebook fried itself due to the NVidia video card. Seems to be a common problem that Dell is aware of but doesn't seem inclined to do much about.

What model Dell, and how long did it take before it went belly up?

Just bought BG a Dell XPS 1530. It's NICE. Did get the 2 year warranty and home repair with it (somewhat familiar with Dell issues).

Mine was 6 wks old when the hard drive went belly up and it just got worse from there before they finally replaced it. Then this one started having to have parts replaced. I finally shelfed it and bought an HP. Mine is an XPS M1710 first generation I think.

XPS 1210, the warranty had expired. I'm of the opinion you shouldn't have to pay for a known default, warranty or no warranty. You sell someone a faulty product you should have to replace it. But, it's how things are in this day and age so I'm not going to cry about it. I'm just not going to buy a Dell product anymore.

The video card apparently overheated the machine and fried everything. All I know is that the only way to fix it is to purchase a whole new motherboard (or whatever) since the video card is integrated.

My first question is what does everyone think of the Sony Vaio laptop? I am really a Dell person but I believe they were out so my mom got me a Sony. I don't know anything about them so just wondering what people have heard or dealt with.

My fingerprint security has already stopped working.. "Install Fingerprint Reader".

And it comes with McAfee.. I still want to uninstall it, but don't want to be naked on the internet either.

Blu-Ray is AWEsome. I couldn't wait to try it, and the first movie I played was real jumpy, but I think it was because of the computer downloading updates.. it did this for about the first three days.

Last movie I played wored very well, as well as one downloaded from NetFlix

:huggy:

Nope not really .... pretty basic .... if you buy a slick case they will have the mobo standoffs marked for particular types of MoBo's ... ATX, Micro ATX, BTX ( fairly rare)

and If you have done a reinstall, you can to a fresh install SATA makes hooking up Hard Drives easy ... no spending 30 min swapping around IDE jumpers trying to figure why the @#@%$ Compaq will not boot ... only to find out it prefers Cable Select .... or setting SCSI Jumpers (Old School MACS)

oh and start with cheap parts @ 1st ... that way you do not #### up anything really expensive ..... :buddies:
