I'm getting ready to purchase an apple ipod touch( the newest one) and I was curious about the Wi Fi internet. How does it work exactly? Do I have to be near a receiver for it to work or can it work anywhere an everywhere kind of like the verizon wireless cards?
TIA

It only works in the vicinity of a wireless router hooked to a internet access point. It does not do cellular as The Verizon Wireless cards do.
I just bought 1 Touch (Gen 2) 2 Touches (Gen 1) and a Nano and the little Shuffle. All three of the Touches do Wi-Fi intenet.
BTW. The GEN 2 has a 32 GHz. memory and a built in speaker. SWEETTTTT!!!

So the Gen 2 is the best bang for my buck and I won't be able to play on the internet during school. How do I know if I'll be connected to the internet?

I don't know if it is the best bang for you buck or not. It's not as cheap as the ones available at Best Buy which are all Generation 1 Touches.
For accessing the internet you will have to pick from the available wireless access points. If they are passworded you will need that to.

okay. Much easier to understand now. Apple people can be a little confusing. The Best Buy in California didn't have the gen 2? Do you know if they will be getting some anytime soon.

Go to best Buys Website
It is on there.. Just not in the store. I'll shoot you a link as soon as it loads... SLOWWW!!!
Apple® - iPod® touch 32GB* MP3 Player (2nd Generation) - Black - MB533LL/A (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8772081&type=product&id=1204332254560)
BTW.. It even has a Built in Speaker. I thought that was slick..
I can't even find the speaker on it. It's not too load but easily hearable for one person.

That is pretty nice to have! I wonder if Best Buy will give me a redemption code for the item I'm returning. I planned on exchanging a Zune player for an Ipod touch and paying the difference. Maybe they will have some tomorrow if not I can figure something out because they seem very nice and the Zune was not for me!

I actually bought a regular MP3 Player first. The next day tool it back and exchanged for a credit toward an Ipod.
But it was still in the unopened package so i dunno.
Once I figured out my LG Dare did MP3s I decided to go with IPODS for the music that I intend to buy and Rhapsody just to download mass quantities of music to figure out what songs I want to keep. Once done I buy those form Itunes

Mine is open but I only opened it for about half an hour and downloaded the software and absolutely hated it. I'm to use to the Itune ways so I'm going back to it.

Do they have bluetooth? I can use my Nokia N810 to use my blackberry as a modem on Verizon network via the bluetooth option.

I have the 80g Zune and like the software, what I do not like is that it doesn't work with Linux. That is a drawback for me but I can live with it. Zune gives a little more flexibility with the number of computers you can connect to and downloads to multiple PC's as well as use on the Xbox 360.
I still am working on finding a cheap damaged ipod to refurbish and use with linux and rockbox. I just do not like itunes.

I have not read any of the paperwork for it yet. So far I have been able to do everything I needed without reading. I do intend on reading up on it a bit though.
But as of yet I have not seen anything on it about Bluetooth. There is something called "NIKE + IPOD" but I have no idea what that is all about.

I have both. iPod has a larger screen. Larger memory. More expensive. I have the 2nd Gen which also has the built in speaker.
Other than that not a whole lot of difference as far as I am concerned.
I have both because I like Both download services. With Rhapsody for about $15. a month I can download all I want. Try things till I decide what I want to buy. Once I know what I want to buy I buy it from itunes.

I buy alot of my music now from mp3.amazon.com ends up being cheaper and is compatible with any music player and not limited to one computer you can use them anywhere. Especially nice with those 5.00 album deals.
