I found that thread when i searched so I tried that one and a couple other sites before asking for reccomendations. I got very different results within minutes of one another as was wondering if there are differences in the test or what the reason cold be.
On that site, I got 6,000+ and then others were giving me 3,000 and down to <1,000 kbps.

They upgraded on Jan 1st to 7 MBPS.
Anyway, Speedtest.net is what I use.

I remember my rate fluctuating when I was running that test too. I know we have several computer :nerd: types on here. Hopefully, they will chime in shortly.

And it seemes like mine has been whacky since the new year started... At times, it's worse than dial up. I did the tech chat thing and they ran whatever ests they do and said I'm all good...

Their techs have always been nice and worked to resolve issues, but I think they're speed claims are a sham. Their service is very erratic in delivering what they claim for speeds, especially at night.
My advice would be to use the speedtest.net site and you'll notice it keeps a log of the tests (test summary). Build up a period of consistent testing that you can confront them based on those logs. Once you have the proof they should be acting.
After 4 or so service visits and numerous calls, I got sick of the sporadic performance and downgraded the service 1.5. I figured why keep paying them for something they're not going to deliver and could never fix. Unless you're an extreme gamer or downloader you can't tell the difference between the service levels anyway under normal usage.

I'd power down your modem and router and see if that helps.
I forgot to add in my post that it's crazy that nobody appears to be regulating or providing any oversight at the County level over this company to ensure they deliver what they claim they are.
I've had people tell me they've talked to the County employee who is supposed to be watching over them and they've described him as a useless P.O.S.

I'm not a gamer however it runs so slow at times it's very noticable.
I powered them both down and plugged in directly from the modem, bypassing the router and had the same issues. Any idea who the count emplyee is?

I would definitely dump the six if you're just a regular user. Not a killer savings, but it puts 15-20 bucks back in your pocket and makes a statement to them that you're not paying for crap they don't deliver. I made a point of telling them that when I downgraded too.
They do the downgrade over the network.
Don't recall the name of the county guy. Just call the County offices and ask who the liaison is for Metrocast.

I get a pretty consistent 6MB well now 7MB. But around 5-7pm it defintely slows down due to the high usage during that timeframe..
Usually, your speed slows down through a router anyway because of the buffering transfer it has to go through. The only way to fix that is to buy new antennas. I notice occasionally that my speed will differ, however, some of it can be the websites, and some can be you.

NO properly working router is responsible for Metrocrap's performance issues.

You know what's a hilarious subject on this topic is these companies try to downplay the effects of HDTV coming down the pipes on Internet performance. I've heard all kinds of crazy explanations such as the two are on different frequencies etc. Who cares, it's all coming down the same pipe and HDTV takes up huge bandwidth.
The other hilarious subject is some ISP's are starting to implement download quotas. Example your household gets 20 gigs per month of Internet. Go over, you pay XX dollars per gig in penalties.
Again, it's hilarious they can get away with this crap. TV and Internet comes down the same piece of cable. They're effectively saying family X can watch HDTV 24 hours per day, but if family Y uses too much Internet bandwidth they should be punished.
Any thoughts on this?

Direcway has a per day allowance then cut your speed down to almost nothing for 24 hours if you go above it....

That's a different subject though because Directway only sells Internet. I'm talking cable companies that do TV and Internet.
That 42 ms is bad. That's the response time from when you click on something until something happens. I'd be nailing them on that too when you talk to them. It should be down in the 20-30 range max.

And yes, a router can have alot to do with affecting your speed. Unless your on a direct connection to the cable modem/source, your speed will always be slower than a host computer/direct wired computer.

DUMeter is actually a good utility. I used it before I had to replace my hard drive and lost my license. It's worth paying for. It'll keep a tab on how much you've transferred.

Somebody should send that fine County employee charged with protecting your consumer interests with Metrocast the link to this thread and ask him to explain why all these people are not getting the 6 meg connection they're paying for?
They advertise "up to" but they probably don't offer to let you pay "up to" do they?

Cable is like a big LAN. You share the big pipe with everyone in your "neighborhood."
Alot also affects your speed. CPU usage, RAM avaliable, what you've taken in, given out, etc etc. I'll run two more tests since I just restarted.

Everyone knows Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test (http://www.speedtest.net)
Speedtest (http://speedtest.metrocast.net)
That's the metrocast/bbr speedtest.
Speakeasy - Speed Test (http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/)
Speak easy not as nice as speedtest, but pretty reliable.

I get pretty consistent speed most of the time. There's a metrocast forums on BBR and some techs monitor it, but they can't by law really guaranty to help you there. They do it out of their own time and will. If i had DSL available i would have jump ship to it a long time ago, is way cleaner connection with a better ping than cable.
