apple macbook a little more than $500, but the best
HP traditionally makes the best laptops. Usually anything from HP should be good. Toshiba also usually makes pretty decent laptops.
Word of advice, stay away from Dell.

If you search thru the forum here, you'll find a few people that have had hardware issues with HP. Turnaround time for repair isn't great. If I were to get a Windows laptop now, it would be a Leveno. However, I've had it with with the Windows environment, issues, failures, intrusions, and my next laptop will be a Mac.

I've had several Dell's, PC's and laptops, never any problems that I did'nt cause myself, Bought two for the teens for xmas @ $499.00 ea. Bare bones but they do everything they need them to do.

I have gone through a handful of laptops over the years and the best of the bunch have been Toshibas. Acer is awful, Averatec decent but doesn't seem to hold up to traveling and daily use, Compaq somewhat better overall but Toshiba is what I'll stick with.
Will be experimenting with a Lenovo 'netbook' this week. 10" screen should travel better and get pretty much everything done but I'll hang on to my current Toshiba just in case.

I have a Toshiba Satelite I bought back in 2003 that I still use it is flawless, Lenovo's are good too from what I hear, this is the former IBM correct?

I'll be 22 next month. On the thirteenth. Ugghhhh! Friday the 13th. That's a little scary. Hey, I'm in the mood for a cheeseburger. Can you meet me at Five Guys in about a 1/2 hour. I'll treat. I have blond hair and am wearing a white sweater. :)

On the off chance this is a real thread, I have a Toshiba and love it. No problems and it's been a few years.

Hey, where were you? i waited 20 minutes or so but I didn't see anyone there close to 28 years old. There were a couple of old farts hanging around but that's about it. Oh well. i got my burger but i was really hoping to catch up to you. Maybe another time. Did you see a red BMW in the lot with a dent in the right side? That was me. Sorry I missed you.

I am kicking myself for not going for a Mac book. I wanted one but they were too pricey so I got another Windows product. Wish I hadn't this thing is constantely being attacked by spyware and such. If you can go for a Mac get it. I've heard that you can put Windows xp on it and run it that way.

Dump Windows and run a Linux variant on it. You can download and burn LiveCDs of several, and boot them from the CD to ensure they can identify and use all your laptop's hardware. You can find links to plenty at DistroWatch.com: Put the fun back into computing. Use Linux, BSD. (http://www.distrowatch.com).

I wish I could, but this has a touch screen on it and the touch screen would quit working if I did. Unless you can figure out a way for me to run Linux and still have my touch screen.
I'm an intermediate geek, not that smart on this stuff. :lmao:

You can
1. Run Bootcamp and boot to Windows Nativatly
2. Run Parallels - Sort of a Emulation / vitual Windows .. you still to a full Win Install, but it is available like any other App
3. Crossover - Build on WINE ... WIN Emulation

ACK! People who touch computer screens should lose their fingers! Nasty, smeary finger grease clouding my lovely pixels!
But, seriously, try one of the LiveCDs of a variant which isn't completely anal about the use of proprietary software, like Ubuntu or Linux Mint. All it should take is drivers for the touchscreen and these may be available through their repositories.
