Those of you who are in the market for a USE car thinking that you'll find a good deal southern Maryland. You won't find it at TOM HODGES unless all you want is 30 day car.
Just to give you short version, daughter got a car from them less than 30 days later "check engine" came on. they did their so called check the code trick and to find out they did not have the proper sofware for the car. Hence the car had to be returned at a later date. By now the it's been 30 days then the air bag light came on, now all they can you do is fall back on the extended warrenty that was purchase. At the same time the paint job stated to flake of like the car had "sun burn". Oh they offered to help 500.00 dollars towards a 4,500.00 to repaint the car.
Check on the internet found the same story. Why is he still in business?

Because people make a rushed decision to purchase before they actually do any research on the product or the company?

Wow, aside from the paint job, I don't think "looking the car over really well" would help anyone determine that the check-engine light or airbag light would come on. I mean unless you are mechanic and can run diagnostics on the car you are at the mercy of the dealer and reputable dealers will take care of such problems.
I'm sorry for your pain, but it's good that you are letting others know of your issues with this dealer.

Sounds like they cleared the computer counters to sell the car. You can do this by disconnecting the battery for an hour or so. 50 years ago this guy would have been putting sawdust into the differential...

I always wanted to know the same thing! How they could still be open, when I hear nothing but bad things from that place? In fact, they must be doing ok, since they just open there own repair shop.

Well if you could look at the purchase of a used automobile for what it represents, As Is, where Is, not right off the showroom floor. Folks who purchase used automobiles need to remember the purchase is not new hence the expectations need to balance with the fact that the car should never be expected to perfom like a new automobile.

Did you look at the date of those reports? He does have a reasonable reputation for a used car dealer, which is why he is still there and people still buy from him. You have to remember what is is you are buying: a used car. He gets most of these cars at auctions and probably has no idea what's truly wrong with it until it breaks. It costs him money to have a tech go over a car from end-to-end, and that would raise the cost to you. He has to play the odds, save a bit of money and hope it doesn't break. Being a used car, you have to expect it to break. If it doesn't, great.

Exactly. People got rid of these cars for a reason. Take the car to your own mechanic to be checked out. Run a search on it.

Ok, didn't mean to imply that you don't have a problem, you obviously do. If you are unsatisfied with any assistance that Tom is giving you, give the BBB a call. Read the fine print on the warranty, he may be well within his rights.

I purchased three used vehicles from Tom Hodges a few years ago. never had any trouble.
My first car was a Chevy Chevette bought at Ourisman in Marlow Heights. Big Lemon!! Daughter's first car was a Honda Civic bought from Tom Hodges. She had it 3 years before she traded it in. It was still running great. Used cars are a crap shoot!

Back in 95, I bought a 1989 S-10 Blazer from Tom Hodges. I'm not from here, and had no previous knowledge or contacts with him. That truck had about 60K on it then. About 215K, I swapped its engine, and ran it to 225 before taking it off the road.
About 2002, I bought a 1999 Blazer, that had about 60K. Still have that truck, its about 110K now, no issues. So, for me, both my dealings with Tom Hodges have been aboveboard and fine.

Maryland State law states that you have 72 hours from the date of purchase to return a vehicle. Tom buys most of his cars from local dealers and auctions. This means that many times the cars may have high miles or are repos. Both are a crap shoot.
Any person buying a MD insepcted car should have it checked by their mechanic immediately. Some sellers may let you do so at your own exspense prior to the contract. Bottom line it's buyer beware.
Many people with less than perfect credit have been able to get financing through secondary channel's by using Tom Hodges and other's. Used cars do not show up in the driveway without a past. If the car was that darn good the original owner would have never parted with it.
Trade in values blow all the way around. Car shopping is a battle between the emotion of wanting a new ride and what folks are willing to do for that feeling. The same applies to used car's as well.

I bought a used VW from them 5 months ago and a few hundred miles later the check engine lite came on. They checked it and changed two sensors that were bad. No problems since.
I bought my son a ford focus at the same time and no problems with that at all.

It's really not the only one though. I found this rather ironic as I had a conversation at work today with three people who had all purchased cars there in the last year that had significant problems. I told them the same as I posted here.
I do not share your fancy for Mr. Hodges looks but he in is business to make money. Cars are not made to last forever for a reason. If they did no one would sell cars. I just think people need to make more informed decision's.
If I was considering a used car purchase from you, I would expect for you to understand me wanting a mechanic's opinion of my choice first. If not that your car will not be on the list for me or my family.
Any car that has had it's manufacture's maintence done can have that history pulled. A carfax report is a useful tool. People in general need to be more informed about purchases that are several thousand dollars or more.
When you buy a house you have to have an inspection and it is your choice who does that inspection. The same should apply to cars.
Do you really not think you can't pursuade an inspection in this county:rolleyes:
It is illegal as all get go, but it happens every day throughout this entire state.

The Maryland law is you have bought the vehicle once you left the dealership's property, as long as all "proper paperwork" is completed. Only a few ways out of it. Like calling the bank you financed with and canceling the contract or hoping there is a paperwork mistake.
As for Tom Hodges Auto, I have bought 4 cars from him in 9 years, and never had a problem.
Key is research the vehicle and pay a trusted mechanic to look it over.
