'01 Chevy.
Have a P1404 code. Has to do with the egr valve. From reading on the net, it is a bogus code. As the valve wears over time, it stops reading as closed, even when it is. If you disconnect it from the wiring harness, scan the codes and turn off the vehicle immediately upon the "codes cleared" message, then reattach the wiring harness and start vehicle, it forces the computer to "re-learn" the position of the valve which stops the code from coming back.

The Auto parts store cleared the code for me, but it came back on again about 30 miles later.

It's going to keep doing that till the computer "forgets" the position of the valve. Even with a brand new valve, unless it just happens to hit exactly the same measurement, the code will keep coming back unless the steps I posted above are followed.

I'm not at work, where I can access the online computer troublecodes, but from past experience, the EGR valve might need cleaning(from carbon buildup), or it might need to be replaced. We (Autozone) read your "check engine light codes" for free.
I'll be at work tomorrow during the day.

I have 2 scanners, one is specific for ford/Lincoln/mercury 1981 and newer. The 2nd scanner looks to be universal ODBII. Looking for a manual for it.....
Found the manual, and here's a link: Innova ODB II 3100
Equuis OBD II code reader (http://www.troublecodes.net/articles/equus/Equuis_OBD_II_code_reader.shtml)
If you don't hook up with CLeValley, let me know, I'm heading up Rt 4 tomorrow morning.

If it's an OBDII scanner, it is universal, and will read any vehicle vintage from 1996 and newer. The one I use at work sells for $279.00. Sometimes, it's a bear to locate the plug in on some vehicles though!

BTW Huntr, this manual says the P1404 code is a stuck open EGR.

Update:
Scanner was utilized. Code is cleared. Last time this lasted about 30(?) miles before coming back. Followed directions found online to force the computer to re-learn the EGR valve setting. Should know by the weekend if it worked. By the end of next weekend for sure.
Need scanner back before that?

Need scanner back before that?I think the van likes you more than me. The code was still on last time I drove it and that was after you reset it.
If it was off when you drove it last night, either the van is conspiring against me and the light went off just for you or you are blind as a bat and the light was on the whole time.

I am fine, you can hang on to it for as long as you need it.

You may be right, because after clearing the code I re-started the van and there was no check engine light on. Van doesn't like you.

What? It's a standard wheelbase.
I don't like kids having to climb over seats to get to their seat.

Nah, I'd pull the last row to get cargo space (which we lack in the minivan).
