My wife and I moved here in March 2008 and absolutely love it!!! DC is only an hour away, Baltimore's Inner Harbor about 2 hours away, Virginia Beach is 3 hours, Atlantic City and Philly less than 4 hours. There is always something to do and places to see. SOMD.com is a great site to watch for local happenings.
We have a house in Pittsburgh and have decided to rent here (it is a long story). There are plenty of apartments to look at and, considering the area, they are reasonably priced.
Plenty of shopping here in the Lexington Park area with all the major retailers around. Sorry, the nearest mall is 45 minutes away (in Waldorf).
Lots of great food. As you would expect, the seafood is fresh. Restaurants run the gamut from Mickey D's, BK, etc through Applebee's, Ruby Tuesday up to the more upscale places (100 bucks with tip included for 2 people) on Solomons Island.

WOW! DH is originally from Pittsburgh and like you we will be Renting our house out in GA. I had it on the market for over a year. I kid you not I only had the one showing. All that is selling are Foreclosures.
It is a military move so I am looking at Base Housing for now.
Nearest Mall 45 minutes away..How will I live J/K
Do you have kids in school? If so what are the good school districts. I need all 3 Elementary, Middle and High School.

Not so much.
Especially down here near Pax, we're surrounded by water almost so that keeps the snow to a minimum...though I can't recall exactly why that is. We'll get a big snow every once in a great while though.

Sorry, no kids, so I am unsure of how the schools are in the local area.
Sorry to hear about the house. What you are seeing in the GA market is the exact reason I decided to keep the house in Pittsburgh. Besides, it gives me a place to stay when we head back that way. Our house is actually located in Beaver County, northwest of Pittsburgh - about 40 minutes or so.
The phone number for Base Housing Welcome Center is 301-342-3846 (DSN 342-3846). You might want to give them a call to check on waiting lists, availability, etc.

What base are you coming from in GA? I moved here from Jacksonville 2 years ago and don't like it here at all. Don't get me wrong, it is pretty. Just not a lot to do unless you want to drive.
I live in base housing too and it is not that bad where I live.

Dh was at NAS Atlanta..Now he is coming from VA Beach..I stayed in GA while he did Sea Duty..
Driving doesn't bother me...Even though I'm in Metro Atlanta it still takes me 40-60 minutes to get anywhere.
Which housing are you at? I'm going to Challenger Estates. From what they told me it is still being built and I will get a new house.

My daughter and her husband live in military housing here and they really like it. They aren't on the actual base though so I haven't seen those. I moved here from The Va. Beach/Norfolk area 3 years ago and I really love it! Good luck with your move!

Look up a guy by the name of James P. Cusick SR when you get here.
He is a local artist that specializes in giving area tours while teaching you the politics of the state and region.
He can often be found at the correctional facility speaking about God, Parental responsibility and political science.

Welcome.
If you are a gun owner, buy as many in GA before you move to MD and buy magazines that hold more than 20 rounds because buying a gun here can be expensive and you have to go through a bit of rigamarole to buy most handguns and some semi auto rifles. And you can't buy 20+ round magazines here, but you can own them.

I believe that is behind Target....which will put you in the Town Creek Elementary/Esperanza Middle/Great Mills High school district....unless they actually redistrict it like they said they were going to at the end of the school year

Is it correct that the school district will be
Evergreen
Esperaza
and
Leonardtown for next year?
And do you know the dimensions on the rooms in your house? I called Housing but they didn't know..
Would you mind sending me a PIC of your kitchen..Or describing it to me...
And how big are the lots of each house 1/4 acre 1/3..etc
I wanna come up there on Winter Break and ck the area out but I don't want to get caught in a snow storm LOL
Thanks for the help
OH one last question.. Do you go to a civilian DR or do you have to go to Tricare clinics like in VA Beach?
Once again Thanks everyone!!!!!!!

Hey... The houses are beautiful. The layouts are all different depending on what kind of house you get. Their are singles, duplex, and triplexes. All of which are huge. You would get a four bedroom if you have three kids... you will have a seperate dining room, huge kitchen, living room... the master bathroom is huge... dual sinks, and so on... oh and also a seperate two car garage... The lots are small, but the have playgrounds for the kiddos. This is the first time we haved lived on base housing, and we love it. As far as school systems, i am not sure... my babies are too little so we havent reached that point yet.
Their is a clinic on base... its small, but nice...
You will like it here... if you don't mind driving. I love it! We came from Jacksonville... I hated it there, so this is a nice change. Heres a website that might help a bit... Lincoln Military Housing | Navy, Marine Corps, Army, Air Force (http://www.lpcmil.com)

Do you have to use the clinic? I've been using Tricare Prime for years and I get to pick my DR here in GA..Is it the same up there...I am able to pick because there are no Navy clinics nearby..If that makes sense...
How many Cabinets would you say is in the kitchen..The website drives me nuts because they only show the outside of the house...I will be getting a single family 4 bedroom house.
Thanks once again!
I hear ya about Jax..never been but when I asked around they said high crime rate, Schools are bad etc..We didn't even bother trying to get orders there...

That is not true about ALL of Jacksonville. Yes, there are parts that are bad. It is like that everywhere! Even here in Patuxent River....heck, you go off base and Ta-Da....you are in a high crime area.
Jacksonville is a pretty place, if you know where to live and hang out. The schools in Clay county are great! Duval, not so much.

You will have to go to the base clinic. If you need any kind of specialty appointment, they send you out in town...
Theirs a ton of kitchen cabnits and drawers.... More space than you will need... their is also a huge built in pantry... If youre getting a single family house... they are upgraded...cherry cabnits, garden tubs, ect...Super nice!!!
About Jax... I hated it... too busy, the crime rate was really high (and im from Detroit, lol), The traffic!!!! Schools are bad... I could go on, and on, lol. Anything else let me know! :howdy:

They just changed that rule. Since there are not many providers at the clinic, all you have to do is call Tri-Care and you can go out in town. I just found out around Christmas time. I still use the base and was told by my provider that the clinic is going to eventaully provide to Active Duty only. They are getting rid of a lot of the Docs and Nurse Practitioners at the clinic.

I am the same way. It is just easier for me and my kids. It is close and I don't have to worry about getting a medication the pharmacy doesn't carry. I am lazy (and cheap) like that! LOL

Where you are going to be is fine. There is a road that leads into one of the gates that is known for high crime. You pretty much don't want to be alone there after dark. You will learn quickly where the safe places are. It is a small place and where you are going to be is pretty nice. I know the houses are fabulous! We drove through there and it is really nice.
The base pharmacy is int he Exchange here. It is not usually very busy so you might want to consider getting your medication there. It usually takes me about 5 minutes to get mine.

Yea, there was a total of 18 kids that got redistricted :bigwhoop:
Of course my house didn't again....I live half mile on one side and 300 feet on the other from the district line :ohwell:
I think that your other kids(not sure what grades) will be going to Town Creek Elem./Esperanza Middle....they are both great schools
