WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) -- A warning tonight for Facebook users. Hackers stole one man's online password and his identity. They changed his Facebook page to say he was in trouble and then hit up his friends for money.

Catina Dailey, who says she has 695 friends on Facebook, has taken steps to try and stay safe.

"Only a few people have access to my pictures and I change my password once a month," says Dailey.

Marika Anastassidis, has more than 800 friends in her Facebook network and there are more than a thousand pictures of her online.

She worries about security, but feels ,"if you use the privacy protection correctly I think it's safe."

There's no question Facebook is a great way to connect with people who want to be friends with you. The danger is the people who want to be you.

"One of the very best ways to steal online--is to impersonate someone else,"says Marc Rotenberg of the Electronic Privacy Information Center.

Rotenberg says call anyone who asks for money before sending it. And to keep from being a victim, there are a lot of things you should never post on your Facebook page.

"Social security number, credit card numbers, financial information, even very personal secrets. They don't belong there."

When it comes to networking, Robbie Abramo says he's cautious.

Says Abramo, "I just try to only add people I know."

She tried that too, but Meagan Allen has now given up her Facebook page in favor of the phone after someone sent her a friend request using her photo.

"If I want to network that badly, I can call or email," says Allen. "I don't need to be on Facebook."

No worries here. My network would be useless because I am nowhere near 800 friends. Or even 700.

Plus the friends I do have are to cheap to cough up anything.

Most people aren't dumb enough to fall for that...but who knows. If you're asking your long lost friend's roommate for cash, somethin is a lil bit odd. And if you're asking someone u talk to all the time, why not pick up a telephone? If I got that I'd probably call them to help them out.

Facebook used to be more secure. It was schools only and they required an e-mail address from your school as verification. Then they realized it'd be a cash cow if they could get highschoolers and other non-college students on facebook. Oh well. I would have preferred it stick with verifiable e-mails instead of allowing hotmail and all that junk. Now someone can hijack your account, change the e-mail, and your account is now their account.

Same with me. I need more friends :bawl: Most of my friends don't use Facebook and the rest of just "user ids" on a forum like this one. I don't know their real names anyways.

What is the purpose of all those "friends", anyway? My only Facebook friends are people I actually know, not strangers I picked up in cyberspace.

Me too. That's why I only have a few. My forum "friends", I only know their first name, met them a few times, friends of a friend or would like to get to know them IRL.

A bunch of old buds have been pinging me to get on it, so I finally did. One thing I found is that sometimes I get friend requests from "friends of friends".

BUZZER... ignore. "And...who are you?" No thanks!
