I had no choice, I was forced to leave the house in this mess - had to get my wife to SMH to deliver a baby (still working on that). But anyway, I was amazed at the level of stupidity of people out in this. We are lucky enough to have a four wheel drive vehicle but if we were not - you would not have caught me dead in this stuff. And yet there were idiots trying to get whereever they thought they had to go in rear wheel drive CARS - We saw a BMW and a Mustang nearly end up ditches - stopped dead in thier tracks, stuck. Both of these cars - these types of cars - had no business out on the road.
Here's a tip - when theres a foot of snow on the ground, stay at home and if you must go out, leave your RWD Mustang or BMW in the garage. Idiots.

And the funny thing was - thier expression when I drove around them as they sat in the middle of the road spinning tires. They just looked at me like they wanted to say "why aren't you stopping to help me - you could push me out of this". I didn't stop because I had a more pressing issue to attend to and because I wasn't the idiot that choose to venture out in a foot of snow in a rear wheel drive CAR. (I mean - just do the simple math, 4 inches of clearence < 12 inches of snow.)

Yeah, tell that to these guys. Both were not in a ditch (yet), just stuck in the middle of the road, blocking my thoroughfare, spinning tires endlessly. Just not enough clearence in this situation.

People always think they're better drivers than what they really are. "Oh, I grew up driving in snow!" Yeah, well so did people in Nebraska and Montana, and you still see them lose control and end up on the side of the road.
The fact remains that no matter how good of a driver you "think" you are, you can still hit an icy patch and get in an accident or get stuck. And I won't stop to help you because I'll be home where I belong.

Things are moving a lot less quicker than anticipated but the ETA is around 0930. It's a girl unless there is some MAJOR surprise.

Its not the car its the driver! We travelled back from the airport yesterday and saw 5 cars flipped over or on their sides. ALL OF THEM WERE 4 wheel drive.
I'm from upstate NY and I've driven rear wheel drive cars my entire life. I've never spun off the road or crashed during a snow storm.

I've found that a lot of SUVs flip because people drive them in the snow like they're invincible. I agree. Driving is a MAJOR component. Still, I'm not taking Roxanne out in this. No way!

Congrats on your pending arrival! What a great story to tell your child in a few years. Let us know when he/she gets here. :yahoo:
I'm due tomorrow and we were really hoping our son didn't decide to be born during this storm. It was a "joke" with my family all day yesterday. Luckily, he wasn't ready to join us last night so we're still waiting.

Just got word that St Andrews Church Rd should be avoided if at all possible. Even some 4wd's are having trouble if the driver is inexperienced.

You nailed it. Another native New Yorker here. This is a "dusting" compared to what I've lived through. Drove back from Mt. Airy last night to St. Mary's no prob. and I'm here in D.C. at work today. It's ALL about how you drive, not what you drive. Though I do admit all-wheel drive makes it nicer.

That's because retards think just because their vehicle is 4wd that it will stop better.
Unless the snow is so high that it drags the bottom of a car a 4wd truck isn't any better.

Exactly. When I was in HS in western MD, I had a rear wheel drive Dodge Dart. Never had problems. Had to use chains sometimes but it's all in how one drives. At that time, a storm like last night and today would've meant a one or a two hour delay of schools so we had to know how to get to where we needed to go. I didn't feel like burning leave that I'd rather use for the beach, so I went to work. No problems.

Wow, I was starting to think I was the only native Upstate NY person down here. Drove from Frederick (left at 6pm) to Lexington Park (arrived at 930) last night with no problem. Never spun, never slid, never fish tailed. Knowing how to drive in this stuff is important, but probably less so than avoiding the people that can't. The snow kinda reminds me of home a little bit at least, though our schools would have had a two hour delay at best for something like this, and it wouldn't have been announced until ten minutes before the bus was supposed to come.
Honestly though, I wish someone would smack me upside the head for actually coming into work today. But that would require someone else to actually be here.

Yea, when my dad was alive he used to tell me "you have to drive your vehicle and everyone else's around you."

Because I was there once....
Many years ago when I worked for a real SOB, we had a bad snowfall around 10 inches or so. I had a RWD car and lived about 30 miles from work. Bossman DEMANDS I show up for work because if he can make it, I should. None-the-less, I put my car in a ditch (just after I dropped baby off at a babysitter). THANK GOD it was afterward.
There was a very nice gentleman that helped me get my car out of the ditch and I went back home and told jerkboss that since my days pay is NOT more than my insurance deductible was...forget it. If he needs me he can come get me.
I'm not justifying ignorance, just expressing what the underlying factor may be. I was young, naive and I needed my job... and bossman was a bully.
With age, I've learned to shut people down when they try to tell me how/when to drive. No job is worth the expense of being without a car for repairs and your insurance going up.
Stay home and tell your boss to blow.
OBTW I later found out he was paying DOUBLE for his car insurance than I was.

Coming into work today I counted numerous cars with at least 6 inches of snow piled on top of their cars and a few cars only took time out to clean off a little circle in their windshield. The snow on top of a car is nothing, Imagine being a 100-200 feet behind a semi and seeing the snow come off its trailer in one solid sheet and hit your car.

Check out a Subaru wagon next time you buy a car. I couldn't tell much difference this morning between the snow on the street and a heavy rain. I did manage to get the ABS to kick in once by stomping on the brakes.

Stupid is as stupid does and there are a lot of stupid drivers. Ignorant, rude, careless and most of all oblivious. In this weather they at least have a good excuse for not seeing you - they haven't cleared theur windows. Can't impress on people enough that four wheel drives slide just as nice as two wheel drives if you don't stop and accelerate smoothly. Quck movements are going to make any tire break traction.
Great news about what was on the road this morning is that if you took your foot off the gas the car actually slowed down. As I was rolling to a stop, the jackarse in the left lane decided they needed to be in the right lane and switched lanes (from a dead stop) when I was about 5 feet from them. My slow smooth stop became a panic - lock up the wheels stop because this dipstick either didn't look or couldn't see because his windows weren't cleared.

thats a great idea! I think I'm going to drive around with big chunks of metal on the top of my car to keep people a certain distance behind me. I mean thats pretty much the same impact on other vehicles as the big 6 inch chunks of ice that come flying off into windshields. You're so smart, why didn't I think of that.
