Tried by hand, tried the band style wrench...... the canister is crushing, I hate to crack or punture the filter right now as it is getting dark, any tips before I resort to jamming a screw driver through it tomorrow morning. I'd like to avoid the mess and PITA.

That's what I've had to do once or twice before. Puncture it mid-filter, not at the end or it will just rip open and not come off the thread. Once it starts crushing, it's tough to get off.

Strap wrench. Keep on crushing it until it gives. If it doesn't give put the screwdriver through it and get it over with.

I had one that I unded up having to cut off with a hammer and chisel. That was the most severe oil filter I have ever seen in 20+ years of working on cars professionally.

Oil filter socket on the end of the filter?

I've had to switch to those on the bike since I can only access the end of the filter.

What kind of vehicle? Access is driven by that, and the best tool is driven by access. I have a band type that is different from this, much better.

What I have in one like this, and its never failed me yet. And Dodge factory filters are some of the toughest there are.

4555 - Band-Type Oil Filter Wrench - 4-1/8in To 4-21/32in (http://www.americastoolwarehouse.com/automotive-tools/OTC-4555.html)

But, on my Neon, that one wouldnt fit, I used a regular strap wrench.

to prevent this from happening again, put a little oil on the gasket of the filter

Hubby changed the oil in my Expedition. Easy breezy right? Wrong. 2hrs later the oil filter still would not come off. We had to puncture it (several times) to get it off. Huge mess in the driveway. First time that has ever happened. Wonder if I can talk him into changing it again,.

I do that everytime, this is the 37 th time I've changed the oil in this truck, I bought it new in 1995, the problem here is that I only drove it like 5k in the last year and haven't changed it in a years time, it is seized up, I am going to try one of those socket adapters tomorrow, then ?????

Access is terrible, it is a 4 cyl Tacoma.

Oh god! Don't say that. Hubby just bought one ('99). Let me know if it's worth it to just pay someone to change it,. I bought one of those tools. It came with the handle attached. One we had was too small. Hubby rode out and bought a new one, handle broke after two tries. Took it back, got another one. Still didn't work. Had to use a screwdriver through the filter.

It is not that bad getting your hand to, but once you need to use a wrench on it, it is a PITA.

Channel locks work fine for the smaller filters, I hate strap wrenches and have the scars to prove it!

if my normal socket adapter type doesnt work, i use this thing. when you get it tight enough it will put a small dent in the side of the filter on the corner of the metal piece that will help take it off

Things I learned when I was a mechanic:
Use a strap wrench and grip the filter at the top (threaded end) and not the bottom.
Never fail to lubricate the new filter gasket liberally before installing it.
Never tighten the new one with any tool; use your hand only. People think it has to be super tight not to leak but that's not true.
I've used a strap wrench since the 70's and never had a problem with it. You must clean it regularly to remove any oil so it grips and doesn't slip around the filter.
Always put some oil into the filter new before installing it to eliminate air pockets and any delays in the engine being oiled.
