Situation is that I am going to make some cables. what Ive been given is a reel of CAT 6 cable, and a blisterpack of CAT5 plugs. Kind of a pain, given the plastic insert in the CAT 6 cables, and I'm wondering if the CAT 6 plugs have provisions in them to accommodate that better. If not, I'll limp along with the CAT 5 ones, but if I can get some locally, and they dont cost an arm and a leg, I'll get the CAT 6 ones.
I'm only making about 4-6 cables, all under 50 feet.

If you are talking about the x shaped piece in the middle you just cut that back, it doesn't go in the connector. I don't think there is a local place that sells the connectors. The main difference that the cat 6 connector helps with is it has larger grooves for the slightly thicker guage wire.

Try Radio Shack, Lowes or Rexel in Waldorf.

DR, thanks, yes, Ive cut it back, but the 1/4 inch or so of the outer insulation that fits up inside the plug, that still has it. And larger grooves sounds good to me, its a pain trying to line up those get them jammed in there. Waldorfs going to be too far, I suppose I'll try the Shack down here. Tried Lowes here already, no joy.

Huh, ours is nothing but the vinyl cover. Two tips that might help. Cut the individual conductors at an angle and moisten them before you slide them in.

There's a Rexel on GMR just behind the new Checkers. St. Marys lighting may also carry them. Radio Shack only carries Cat5.

I'll throw that at the IT guy this AM when I pick up the router. SInce he does it as a collateral duty, he might not know there's a difference in the connectors. Wanted to cable it this week, but I'll wait for the right parts.

No difference in the CAT 5e or CAT 6 plugs... not sure about Standard CAT 5 stuff as that is an old hat to us.

Well, they sell them, and the big difference I see is the spreader bar, and Ive seen some reports that the CAT6 wire holes are slightly larger. I know cramming them into the CAT5 plugs I have is a stone bit#$. IT guy is ordering some for me, I'll report back.

the actual copper in the cabling is slightly larger according to my phone guy .... he has had some issue of wiring being loose punching Cat 5 Cable to Cat 6 Jacks

CAT-6 can be a larger gauge however, the only difference between the 2 is that CAT-6 has more stringent crosstalk specs.
In other words, if you put a TDR on CAT-5 and it passes CAT-6 specs, then presto - you got CAT-6.

Just to update and close this out. COmpany IT guy ordered up some CAT6 plugs for me. These right here.

Man, what a difference it made. That back piece helps keep your pairs straight, the spreader organizes them for the plug. If you are making cables and not using these, your doing more work than you need to.
I made a total of three cables (15, 20 and 25 feet) after getting these, all checked out first time, and have been in use for a month now.
