View Full Version : I'm afraid of my cat

She is the kind that will let you pet her for a few minutes, then without warning, will bite and scratch you. She is purring while you're petting, even rubbing her cute little face on your hand then, CHOMP! She clamps with her teeth and clings on to your arm with her claws.

The is the very first cat I have encountered with such a problem. I've pretty much accepted that this is how it's going to be, I can't snuggle her at all.

Before I completely give up, is there any way you can actually train a cat? I know there is some guy in the Florida Keys that has trained cats and they perform tricks.... Maybe I'm not looking to train so much as to end her biatchiness.

I had a female cat like that years ago. I even nursed her, because we found her when she was too young to be without her mother. Evil, evil cat. I tried everything with her.....extra attention, treats, talking to her and yes even biting her back. Nothing worked.......good luck with yours!

We have the same cat. I call him Slash. He hates us and we don't like him a lot. We got him when he was very young, abandoned on the side of the road. Maybe that's it? He is mean as hell.

We have one cat, the calico, that does the same as yours, all rubbing on you, purring, loving the petting,, then without warning she bits the hell out of you and runs off a few feet, then she comes back and tries to get you to pet her again.

the other one will sit and purr as long as you pet him, if you stop, he bites. or if you walk past him while he is up on something and you dont pet him on the way by, he attacks you.

I feel sorry for the little dog, those cats whoop his stupid butt each and every day.

.22 short

POP

No more biting

Cats are inherently evil and their tiny brains can't grasp the concept of loyalty.

My gawd, that sweet precious adorable kitty I got from Cattitude is the same way! I have marks all over me from her biting and scratching me. The other nite, unbeknownst to me, she was under the covers and when I got into bed she attacked me and tore the hell out of my feet! I am ready to ship her back to Calvert County. I have been nothing but good to that witch! :cds:

Our male does that but only if you touch his fat belly. He's sensitive about it :drama: and doesn't like anybody to notice it.

Vrai has had success telling naughty kitties to behave, patient, again and again and it pretty much works. I hit 'em in the face with a baseball bat which also works.

One for my cats does the same thing as well. I tried smacking him on the nose and it has no effect on him. A cat is just gonna do their own thing. I finally just gave up and let him do what he is gonna do. Now my female cat it the complete oppisite. She will lick you to death.

i'm so tellin kendra what you said!

cats are evil (cept for kendra and pepper) so I am not surprised. I remember one time my family had a cat and we had a few relatives over and they were all sitting on a couch. My cat jumped on one of their laps, got pet for awhile, then bit the first one. A few minutes later, someone else would have her sitting on their lap and then she'd eventually bite them. This continued to happen until every person visiting had been bit. Stupid cats.

Cats are inherently not into being touched; their ancestors are all loners. Cats are not pack animals, the only touch they understand is what they received from their mother (grasping their scruff to tell them they've done something wrong, to hold them still, or get them somewhere for example). Petting is the nearly the same as their mother cleaning them, but they know you are not their mother despite the fact that you care for them and feed them every day. Many cats will only tolerate so much of it, depending on their upbringing and how long they were able to stay with their mother and litter mates. There's nothing you can do about it.

There's also only so much you can train a cat to do, but it isn't hard. You can train a cat to sit, stay, roll over, and most other things a dog can do (though I have to tell you I haven't been able to get my cats to stay for more than 30 seconds). The trick to training cats is to understand that they are not doing it for you (the loyalty of dogs: they want to please their pack leader and be part of the group), they are doing it for what they get out of it, such as a treat, praise, or a favorite toy. Cats don't usually respond to praise or toys though, and you often have to find a treat that will really get them excited. Regular cat treats, meat baby food, canned tuna, and small amounts of cheese are good ways to get them to do the trick.

Buy The Cat Bible. It's worth it. A good training book is How To Get Your Cat To Do What You Want by Warren Eckstein. He's a cat trainer and behaviorist.

Those two books have helped me to understand my cats so much more than I ever imagined. Makes you feel good to be able to relate to your cat on a better level.

Jack does almost the same thing, except I've learned the signs. He'll get a crazy look in his eyes, and I know to stop petting him. My female cat sometimes tries to bite, but I'll scruff her, tap her on the nose, and say NO BITE! It works.

That totally sounds like my Aurora. She was a bottle baby too. She was totally devoted to my husband and hated me with a passion. Now he passed away, and she's just now, after 3 years, starting to come around. She wants to be super close, wants to be petted, but then will start to claw or hiss, or howl. I do adore her, and she can be the sweetest, but she can also be a b________!!!!

Oh, and she's super moon affected. Around a full moon, she's my best friend, and acts like a crazy lady. Before and after, watch out!

You all have really good ideas (well except for aps, softball and Larry's suggestion ). I'm going to get that book, it's worth it. I know much more about dogs than cats....

Regarding dogs, when we get a house we'd like to get a dog.... my cat has been known to beat up dogs, even pit bulls :ohwell: I guess like everything it takes time for the animals to be accustom to each other. I refuse to declaw, am thinking about caps for her nails just until she gets used to the pup. She is an indoor outdoor cat, her day is our night so the dog and cat will have opposite schedules.

My sister had a cat that would only tolerate people when she was pregnant. Any other time, she'd attack for no reason anybody who looked at her wrong.

I don't think they'd be worth the trouble. I just kept clipping the curved part off the claw, and eventually I was able to start clipping them closer (the quick recedes over time if you clip regularly). Once it gets to that point they start dulling the clipped edges and you're left with nice, smooth claws. Well, on some toes.

It's weird, the middle, pointer, and thumb claw on my cats tend to stay sharp, but the rest I rarely have to clip because they just do that dulling thing. Dunno why it works, but it does.

It's a hormone thing. When I took Friday to the vet (the pregnant kitten with open wounds on her legs I found in Westbury), they said she may not stay so sweet after she had the litter. RoseRed lucked out, she says she's still sweet as ever :)

RR, how long has it been since we found her? She was estimated 7 months then... must be almost a year by now.
