I just moved to the California, MD a couple weeks ago after graduation for a job. At this point I haven't yet figured out what exactly there is to do in the area to meet people around my age (22 y/o), do for fun, and is interesting that doesn't involve going to bars. What are some of the things y'all like to do? What are the local hotspots in your opinion?

OK, don't advertise the sewing thing...
Good plan on saving for a house. Now is the time to buy.
The base has adult soccer leagues.
Saint Mary's Lake is about a 6 mile hike (I'm guessing).
Again, don't advertise the looking for reptiles thing.
For chicks try Solomons Island in the summer. They migrate north in the winter.

:smack: SHHHHHH!!! I was hoping he might want to knit me a baby blanket, better yet, he can sew me some baby clothes
For kayaking, go to Bluhaven Piers (http://www.bluhavenpiers.com/) in Ridge.
St. Mary's lake is fun with a mountain bike.
Cold Blooded creatures a plenty, from all kinds of skinks, lizards, turtles, frogs, snakes..... lots to spot. My son finds them all.
Speaking of wildlife, otters are playing with their pups, birds of prey (eating said pups), dolphins, skate, albino deer in the woods at St. Mary's City, just to name a few.
OH, also, visit SO MD, So Good (http://www.somarylandsogood.com/) local buying campaign, visit all or most of the local farms buy some fresh good for you food grown in this county

Holy crap you are like my mirror image. I just graduated in Computer Engineering, got a job in software engineering, age 23, just moved up here 2 weeks ago, have absolutely no idea what to do, I play video games, watch anime, read manga, play tennis, and I have no idea what to do or where to hang out up here.
I dunno would prolly be pretty good friends haha. Really looking for people to hang out with / chill when I don't want to sit in front of the computer for hours.
EDIT: Oh yeah I played soccer for something like 14 years before college.

have access to the base?
Either as a contractor or govie, opens up a lot of ooportunities. Intramural leagues.. MWR. ITT Trips..
There's a HUGE sailing club, where you can learn how to sail, and even take out boats on your own, or race as part of a crew.
Bowling leagues..
Just get involved.. even volunterring you will meet a LOT of people in all age groups..
For every 10 guys your age and your experience there may be 2 matching of the opposite sex..
80% of the women are involved and doing stuff, while maybe 20% of the guys are (not to include bar hopping), Most guys are at home drinking beer and playing PS3.. .. If you get involved in somethings you'll find the women out number the men, and have fun while out meeting them.

I will have base access very soon, but not yet. Just started my job this week, but that does sound very promising maybe I should just drop tennis and pick up soccer again.
Anyways, this is prolly weird. Especially on an internet forum but Mikeru, for the interest of meeting new people in a new town we should totally hang out. Send me a PM or hit me up on AIM, Almightyspork111.

Really, I'm perplexed by the perception that my ability to mend my own clothes, sew my own collared button-up shirts, etc. somehow puts into question my sexuality. Really, as far as I'm concerned, sewing is a practical and useful skill. It's quite comical to think that somehow my heterosexuality is threatened by my ability to tailor my own clothes.
*shrugs*
And reptiles and amphibians are some of the most fascinating animals on the planet... if somehow not be scared of creepy crawly things is a negative attribute and thinking they're interesting makes me strange, so be it.
This forum is proving to be interesting. Perhaps I'll have more amusement than I thought.

Without a doubt, you'll have amusement on this forum!!
Trust me, a woman doesn't find anything wrong with a man that knows how to sew. As far as reptiles/amphibians, what male isn't curious about nature? You'll be fine with the ladies, at least the right ones anyway.

You will dude and don't take things personal on here, you have the viewpoint of thousands on what we read and how we interpret it. We try and find humor or controversy in everything presented.....I have an Uncle who is a Navy S.E.A.L. and he can sew like Betsy Ross........:buddies:

There are probably a lot of engineers in this area due to the contractors in the area... but most aren't young, rather 10+ years older than myself with families... like my co-workers. Still, the job and pay is good, so for now I'm just trying to make the best of my situation and just be thankful I have a good job right out of college.
Anyways, Thanks everyone for the suggestions and advice, I'll be sure to check out the Calvert Marine Museum (I think I got a coupon booklet in the mail with some discount/advertisement for it).
Although, I don't think I'll get used to the shock of how expensive it is to live down here considering it's location...

Although, I don't think I'll get used to the shock of how expensive it is to live down here considering it's location...
yeah that's the same attitude i took. the cost of living down here is ludicrous considering the crappy location. Oh well. All my coworkers are around 10+ yrs older than me, but it's gotten slightly better lately. I don't hang out w/ my coworkers...met most of the people I knew through the forums. That was a mistake too, bunch of crazy mfers on here :ohwell:

Really, I'm perplexed by the perception that my ability to mend my own clothes, sew my own collared button-up shirts, etc. somehow puts into question my sexuality. Really, as far as I'm concerned, sewing is a practical and useful skill. It's quite comical to think that somehow my heterosexuality is threatened by my ability to tailor my own clothes.
*shrugs*
And reptiles and amphibians are some of the most fascinating animals on the planet... if somehow not be scared of creepy crawly things is a negative attribute and thinking they're interesting makes me strange, so be it.

Oh my... you need to stay around the forums. Most definitely. Young, intelligent, and you can sew and like creepy crawlies! So far, you're my favorite here. Granted, I'm still new so I don't know a lot of the "locals".
You should teach me to sew. I bought this sewwing machine months ago and haven't so much as opened it... I really need to get to work on that. Promised the boyfriend I'd make him new garb for the renaissance festival this season(which starts at the end of august and runs through the end of october, if you're into that kind of thing)... Hmmm didn't see this post.
Actually... I made a trip back home to VA a few weeks ago to go to the VARF with some friends from back home, it was my first renaissance faire. Definitely interesting, lol.
My first project was a vest. It was pretty easy because it didn't require sleeves, which are hard to get perfect... I take forever to finish my sewing projects unless there's a deadline because I'm a mad procrastinator.
You should start out relatively small, but can definitely take on a bigger project once you get down how to use your sewing machine (i.e. threading the bobbin, machine-specific details, how to perform a backstitch, speed settings, making your seams neat, etc.). Technically my first project was a pillow, but that was just to get a hang of using the sewing machine et al. before taking on the vest.
Reading patterns takes practice and I still get confused reading some of the instructions sometimes. So while I sew, I'm no pro and wouldn't consider myself good enough to teach someone. I want to get to the skill where I can do alterations to patterns.
One thing you have to be willing to do is make mistakes... I think what ended up being the hardest part of learning to sew for me, was to get over the fear of ####ing up.

Honestly, the VARF is a little lackluster. Ours is pretty awesome though, one of the biggest in the country and pretty well established. I love it there, you should check it out.
As for the sewwing, I've done some small projects before. Made arm arm warmer things back in highschool before they became the "in" thing(at which point I promptly stopped wearing them), I did a pillow in highschool as well. I'm pretty versed at hand stitching, but it just takes so damned long :( .

Yeah, I talked with the friend I went to the VARF with and he said he had heard that the MDRF was much better, and that he may be going. If he does, I'll probably go with him. I Googled the website and it looks 100x better.
Hand stitching is one of my weaknesses. I definitely need more practice with the difference kinds of stitches. Whenever I have to do hand stitching, it's on the few last steps that need to be completed to finish a project, so I normally don't do a very stellar job because I'm getting impatient having to spend so much time on it. I kind of wish you spent more time using the sewing machine... which is the relatively speedy part of sewing... at least compared to the amount of time you spend doing preparation and busy work like cutting out the pattern and fabric pieces, pinning, etc.

Unfortunately, up until I bought my machine, hand stitching was all I was able to do. But now I have my machine and just have to find the time and the energy to sew something again. I should be starting when my roomie finishes moving in this weekend. She's pretty well versed, and is going to be helping me along. Not to mention... she knows how to make her own patterns and such, so if there's an off the wall peice of garb I want, I don't have to go hunting down a pattern that is for something similar and altering it. I can just make her make it :D
