Took kiddos laptop there on Friday... They suck.. poor customer service. I was going to leave my laptop also but didn't really care for the attitudes there so I left with mine.

Any suggestions for someone else? My laptop keeps having a blue screen pop up and then it shuts off.. When I turn it back on it tries to repair itself and does a system restore. It will work for a little bit and the same thing will happen.

Mine is doing the same thing:frown: I talked to my husband about it & he told me to make sure my drivers are updated since it is usually associated with driver errors. It is a general error so it's hard to pinpoint what causes it.

What LusbyMom is describing doesn't sound like a cord to me. But if she wants you to fiddle with her computer, that would be her decision.

she should post what was wrong then... one of the laptops the cord is defective and the other computer is loaded with spyware... easiest solution is to backup, wipe and reinstall

Kiddos laptop is the one Geeks is saying just needs a cord. Which they said they would get.. then refused to get. We thought it might be the cord. It wouldn't power on or anything. They charged $70 to plug it into their cord and it powered on. So they called us to come get it.

Mine is the blue screen issue. Both are less than a year old.

A few years ago while working for the governement we hired Geek Squad to come out. Their prices were ridiculous and they rarely fixed our issues without a second trouble call. A friend of mine suggested Sean. He was great and his prices were half of what Geek Squad charged. :yay::yay:

Should have still been under warranty.

Took the girlfriends laptop in for repair cause the screen was messing up really bad to the point where it would just turn into a bunch of horizontal lines.

Geeksquad told me it needed the drivers updated. I told him i needed a new ribbon cable, he had the most confused look on his. I was told they would need it for 4 weeks to get the part and send it to HP. I just sent it back myself had it back in 3 days works like new.

Chess knows his computer stuff, if i need stuff i just get my younger brother to take care of it.

Who did you call about your computer? The same thing just happened to our laptop. Blue screen said registry file failure...cannot load the hive file....corrupt, absent, or not writable. Oh and it dumped physical memory???? WTH!

The thing is we took it Geek Squad at BB back in May we paid them over $400. It was $120 just to drop it off, then they had to do something to the hard drive because it was bad supposable, and one associate tried to get us to buy windows vista. We almost did until the other guy said we didn't have to. It was a mess. They had it almost a month when it was all said and done. The people that work the counter where you drop your stuff off at are not the people who repair the computers. So you can not always go by what they tell you. We used the computer for not even 2 months after we got it back, kept the Norton up to date, and boom blue screen ... so frustrating!

My laptop had same problem and my friend from AZ who came up here last Februrary to visit. He resetted my laptop and got rid of the blue screen. However, all of the pictures and files I had on that computer were wiped clean. I'm not complaining because I can use my laptop again.

He said something there's a code that tell you what's wrong and use that code to troubleshoot to fix the problem.

My husband is an IT guy so if I keep having problems with it he will fix it. I also have the full extended warrenty from best buy so they have to fix anything that goes wrong with it or give me a new laptop. I've already had the power port repaired twice in the year I've owned it.

You probably won't get both unless there is a middle man. LOL

Check memory ... MemTest (http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp)

is the processor fan running ? maybe it is overheating ....

beyond that ... back up the data and reinstall the OS

The blue screen error, unfortunately, is a generic one. I would 1st check the memory. Take it out and the re seat it. Laptops are known for the memory needing to be re seated, as they are constantly being handled and moved around. It's a 2 minute fix that the Geek Squad never does. Their answer is alwys the expensive one. You either need all new sotware installed (Ka ching) or you need a new computer ( ka ching X2). If the memory isn't the issue, then just do a repair install. Simply install Windows over top of itself. This will repair/replace any corrupt or missing files while you still retain all of your programs/files/and settings. Don't ever take a computer to the Geek Squad. Remember, they work for Best Buy who just wants you to purchase product from them. The service option is just there to get you in the door.

I have heard bad things from others before you about the Geek Squad, but have never had to deal with them myself.

The blue screen of death has a wide range of possible causes including but not limited to corrupted system files that are vital to the pc, hardware problems, registry problems...etc. The answer to the question depends largely on what type of operating system the laptop runs on. Maybe you mentioned it earlier in the thread but you will have to forgive me as I didn't read through all 4 pages

Some generic things to check as a few others have pointed out earlier in the topic are the drivers, make they are updated, or that you have one that you know works, also make sure any cards or chips are firmly in place and not suffering from "chip creep" (when cards/chips wiggle their way out of the socket over time). If the problem is a driver you will be able to roll it back using Device Manager (How to Roll Back a Device Driver (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/driverrollback.mspx)). The way that you would determine this is if you had recently installed a new one and suddenly you begin to notice these errors, if not then it probably isn't your drivers.

The timing of the error can also give you some clues as to what it might be, as in what are the circumstances when the error occurs? How long has the pc been running before it occurs? If it occurs after the pc has been running for many hours then it could possibly be that your processor is overheating due to dust inside, blocking the fans from properly cooling your cpu. If for some reason the fans are obstructed the cpu can shut the system down automatically in a matter of seconds to prevent further damage to your pc.

If the problem persists enough and becomes bad enough your only sure and viable option may be to first boot into safe mode and try to troubleshoot, secondly try "Last Known Good" configuration, and if those fail you may be forced into invoking the Automated System Recovery process, but only as a last resort.

If you have any questions about how to implement those just ask, I'm a Microsoft Certified Professional and an A+ Certified Technician.

Mine seems to be fine since I did all the updates.
