I found this guy in my flower bed this morning. Can anyone tell me what kind it might be, by its markings. My #1 rule for determining if it is a venomous snake is the triangular shape of the head. I couldnt get it the picture but it is defintily not triangular.

It appears that it is an adult garter snake. These things (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garter_snake) can even be found in Alaksa

Leave it. They're good for killing mice. I wonder if they're good for moles, killing them I mean?

Yep, that guy is your very best buddy. Great for vermin control, only possible harm would be a very small bite, and that only if you went after him. And the bite would be along the lines of a paper cut, at worst, really.

Even better snake.... an Eastern King Snake (http://www.uga.edu/srelherp/snakes/lamget.htm), they eat copperheads, cottonmouths, and rattlesnakes.

I have to agree, and I'll echo what Vince posted as well: They kill(eat) mice and other vermin in, and around your property.

Leave him/her alone, as it is doing you a favor. :yay:

Bull$hit.

ORLY? :eyebrow:

They're resistant to venom of pit vipers. All king snakes eat venomous snakes.
