We got DirectTV installed last week and it "appears" that you can hook the xbox up to the back of the box. However, we tried that and it's not working. We looked on the website and it says we need to buy something seperately to hook up the xbox but in their forums, it says you can hook it up directly to the box. Do we have to buy something seperate or is there a way to hook it up to the box and maybe have to change the setting on the remote??

Personally, I'm enjoying the kids not fighting over the xbox.

Which reciever do you have? Model number would be best. A picture of the back panel would work also. Or at worst, a list of the various connectors on the back and what they are labelled.

We have just the standard receiver. No HD or DVR. I'll try to get a picture when I get home this afternoon. We do have a spare TV (not connected to DirectTV) that we could hook up the xbox in another room if neccessary.

From what I read, yours would be the D10 model. But it doesnt look like it matters, since apparently, none of them have any sort of inputs, only outputs. Since the box doesnt have that, your next bet is to hook the Xbox to an alternative set of inputs on the TV itself.

Now, how you go about that depends on your television, and what inputs that has. And, what cables you have for it and the DTV box.

Theres the old standby, coax cable itself, like you have coming into the back of the cable box, the thick black one, screws on, has one copper electrode in the center.

Then you have composite, which is three cables together, usually colored red, white, and yellow. Yellow is video, red and white are the left and right channels for audio

Then theres S-video, which looks sorta like a computer connection, the cable is usually a little thinner than the coax, the connector is about the size of your pinky, has a small rectangular guide pin, and I think five metal pins. This one only passes video, so you need the red and white for audio.

This covers the cables you might have on a standard defintiion setup. Post back later, and we can figure the rest out.

This is what we have. I'll try to post more info once I get home and can actually see the receiver. Thanks for helping me with this. I'm sure my kids will thank you more if I get it to work.

I always just pull those cables out and plug them into the matching colored ports on the tv or dvd player. Or trial and error if the ports aren't color coded

I always forget what colors match up to what, but I sure can match colors and pull and plug wires!

So, what you need to do is look at the TV, and let me know its make and model. Or describe the inputs on it. If your lucky, it will have two inputs.

What are you trying to do? Trying to connect a XBox and and a DirecTV receiver to a single tv?

When I first read it, i thought you can watch DirecTV on Xbox!!!!! Even if it did, PS3 is better. :dye:

We decided that since we're planning on buying a new TV for the living room this week-end anyways, we'd hook the xbox to the old TV and stick it in the office so the kids can play and not hog up one of the TVs.

Why dont you just hook it up to the TV?

If you all want help with the TV choice, call out, we've got a lot of TV smart folks here, and unlike the fine folks at Best Buy, we dont get commision:)

Ah, see, even there, theres two kinds of LED, full backlit, and edge lit. And contrary to the advertising, the edge lit isnt quite as good. Still amazing, dont get me wrong. Just the blacks are not quite as black as they could be.

I managed to get the new TV hooked up to DirecTV and the xbox to the old one so everyone is now happy at our house. :buddies:
