Does anyone know how to care for a baby vole? I didn't know where else to post this. Can I feed it Esbilac? Where can I get catac nipples for the syringes? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am sure your cats have killed a few and brought them to you!

Okay, just finished feeding the Vole. Didn't seem very hungry. I made sure to stimulate it afterwards. I have it under a lamp to warm it up until I can find the heating pad. Need to get it warm so it will eat. Hubby will post more pics later so everyone can see it's face. I really don't think he is a squirrel.

The average life of a vole is 3–6 months. Voles rarely live longer than 12 months. The longest lifespan of a vole ever recorded was 18 months.
Didn't recognize one with a head.

Yep...it's a squirrel. It was found on top of a mole/vole (what ever they are) hill and half inside one of the holes. That's what confused us. After some searching and such we realized it's a baby tree rat.
Seems to be doing fine.

That is a Southern Flying Squirrel..with special needs!
Please...do not feed it KMR!
Contact me ASAP and I will come and pick it up now.
I have 2 here and have 15 gray squirrels.
That syringe is WAY too large..they take in only 1 to 1.5 mls.
Did you weigh it before you fed it?
It needs to be fed every 2-3.5 hours...it can die from KMR and from overfeeding.
Call me please:

I know that it is a flying squirrel. I now have 2 of them, both males. I have not fed them KMR. They weight 20 grams and I have been feeding them every 3 hours. The syringe may look big but the tip is perfect. It works better than an eye dropper. Both babies are doing great! I will be taking care of them today and tonight they are going to a man who has raised many squirrels with great success.

Wow, that is great that you have 2 of them!
At 20 grams they are abotu 25-28 days old!
Same age as my 2 give or take 2 days.
Have their upper incisors come in?
How much are you feeding them?
What are you feeding them?
Yes, you can feed it Esbilac with 30/55 added and some heavy cream.
We use silicone feeding nipples with a 1.0ml syringe. Much easier to handle and easier to control overfeeding and bloat.
If this man is not a state licensed rehabilitator, he can not take them, no matter how many he has raised.
State law does not permit keeping of possession of wildlife without a permit.
You can call Mary Goldie, Permits Officer, DRN, for more info on this and a list of licensed rehabbers who are qualified to rehab these squirrels, or any wildlife for that matter.
Her info:
Permits Coordinator - Mary Goldie
MD DNR - Wildlife and Heritage Service
Tawes State Office Building, E-1

If he is licensed, then that is fine, if not call me.
I have been doing squirrels ( rodents) for several years with great success and have a wildlife vet should any medical needs arise, not to mention a whole network of other licensed rehabilitators.
I also have special caging that flyers need prior to release this spring.
It is too late in the season to release these 2. In the wild, they would still stay with their mom thru the winter.
Looking forward to helping you, as requested, with these flyers.

You are smart not to use an eye dropper.
Babies can aspirate very easy and you can not control the flow, besides, squirrels are suckers, not lappers.
Here is one of my flyers using a silicone (soft) tip on a 1 ml syrings:

Yeah, for this guy!!
I just had another smaller one (snake) near the fence driving the dogs close to insanity. I'm guessing they found the second squirrel this morning when she had the dogs out. Can't blame the snakes for being in our yard though. Evidentially it's easy pickens here lately.:ohwell:
