Are you letting your children get the flu shots this year? Mainly wondering about the H1N1(Swine flu) shot.

Please list the reasons.

TIA

Type in 'H1N1' in the forum search engine and read the many threads on this issue. I believe you'll find the consensus is many are refusing H1N1 vaccination due to the fact that it was rushed to development, clinical testing only began mid-August, and the 4 manufacturers have been given immunity from repercussion should the vaccine end up doing harm.

NO H1N1 - for the reasons in the second post, because I don't want my kids to be guinea pigs for big pharmaceutical companies, and of course because I said so, because that's my reason, and because I am the mom.

I will have my teenage kids get both shots. Especially the H1N1. They have never been exposed to that strain, along with everyone else born after 1978......I don't want them to be one of the healthy kids dying if this mutates. The good out weighs the risk of the shot itself. How are you guys going to live with yourselves if your kids die and there was a vaccination available, and free? Poor excuses you'll have. Educate yourself a little besides just reading the crap posted here. Another point...they've been making flu shots for years...I think they have it down. This shot is only different because of the strain, not how it's manufactured. They change it up every year.

And there are many many people that get the seasonal ful and die.
I'm not going by what has been posted on this site. I'm going by the research that I've done. I'm going by what my husband and I have decided to do with our children. Kwilla just posted what I have read in my research.

I have some version of the flu now and my kids won't be getting any flu vaccine. This is the first time I've been sick since childhood; I'm 30. I was up Tuesday night puking my guts up all night, yesterday and today headache and run down feeling. Not bad considering other flu stories I've heard. I believe in letting the body build it's own immunity to things.

How will you feel when your children die or end up sterile or something because you got them the vaccine?

personally I just dont trust the government in the least.

Do you actually think that being sterile is worse than death? Interesting....

Weighing out the risks, I'm going with the shots. I'll be able to live with myself if my kids die, knowing that I was doing everything I could to protect them. Along with all the other immunizations they have gotten.

Government is a non-issue on this matter, I believe we have better lives because of modern medicine. I'm sure alot of people could have been saved in 1918 if this was available to them.

The same people who want antibiotics when they have a virus are probably the same ones not getting these flu shot.

This is still a great country, at least parents still have a choice over what goes into their childrens bodies.

Here's a bit irony for everyone to ponder:
For years it has been said that the government and the FDA take waaay too long to run a drug through clinical trials to get final approval for use on humans. There is always an outcry of "this works, we need to get this out" but then the accusations of too much government oversight come into play.

Now here we have an "impending global pandemic" (note the use of "") and lo and behold the vaccine gets cooked up and out the door in less than one years time. BUT, now nobody wants the vaccine because it was "rushed" through production and clinical trials.

There's been a vacine for years for this, from what I've heard on the news.

stupid question...once the kids have been exposed to the swine flu (and didn't get it) should they still get the vaccine? Or do they actually have to get it and fight it off to be considered good to go?

I was getting ready to start a thread on the schools in St. Mary's not alerting the parents about the report cases in their child's school. The little girl that sits in front of my son had it last week and I assumed there would atleast be a letter sent home. I then go to football practice and hear that there were several cases in Piney Point Elementary and they have yet to send a notice home.

Another silly question...how long is an infected child contagious?

nomoney, I would think if your kids actually got it and are better now, they will have immunity. I don't think the shot would be required then, but I would check with your doctor to be sure.

Just being around or exposed and not getting it? Maybe your kids did a fantastic job and kept their hands away from their faces and washed their hands really well. I would still get the shots.

This is just my two cents, but I'm not a doctor.

This is off a CDC website
"Infectious period
The duration of shedding with novel influenza A (h1N1) virus is unknown. Therefore, until data are available, the estimated duration of viral shedding is based upon seasonal influenza virus infection.. Infected persons are assumed to be shedding virus from one day prior to illness onset until resolution of symptoms. In general, persons with novel influenza A (H1N1) virus infection should be considered potentially infectious from one day before to 7 days following illness onset. Children, especially younger children, might be infectious for up to 10 days"

Lovely. The school told one person their kid could come back in 5 days and I saw them at the Farmlife Festival. I wonder what the doctor told her. I know this mother and she's not the type to put other children in harm's way intentionally.

where/ how did you get a shot for a 15 month old? we're on the waiting list for our son's doc because they only got 10 doses and they're holding those for their high risk patients.

Even better, I have people coming in from out of town after the baby is born, some are flying. I can't get the shot, and I'm pretty sure a newborn can't get the shot. Should I request they get the shot before they visit, maybe wear masks as they travel and even in our presence?

It's everywhere. It's in some of the schools in Calvert. The schools are not under any obligation to tell parents. My boss's daughter (4) has it. She goes to a preschool in Annapolis.

That'd be like sending home notes everytime someone got a paper cut.
