I am curious if anyone has ever had this issue....
I have set my fridge on 5 out of 9 which is the initial setting.... it is a used GE Profile.....
I come home and all the food is frozen.... so i put it down to 1... still frozen ?
Any suggestions... I think its the thermostat that has gone bad.....
Curious if anyone has any information or suggestions !

Don't fall for this Chess... It's a trick!
It totally sounds like the thermostat; maybe you could just leave your refrigerator door slightly ajar until you get it fixed.

 But if it's a jar, then it can't be a fridge, can it?

Girl, it is a GE, let it run away! Chess could then get an upgrade. Problem solved. :lmao:

I don't have a joke (sorry) but my fridge would do this when it got cooler outside, seemed I would have to adjust the temp to a higher setting, but then again, there's nothing like a beer slurpee.

Plug a hair dryer in, turn it on, and toss it in there.

Most fridges do not have a "thermostat". What they have is a mechanical linkage to a plenum that comes from the freezer compartment (the freezer has the actual thermostat). When you adjust the temperature setting, what you are really doing is opening or closing the plenum. Your may be stuck wide open or it is disconnected and unable to close up.

Exactly, pull it out from the wall, vacuum the coils in back, then pull the cover off the front bottom and vacuum up under it really good, gets all clogged with cobwebs, yuck.

chess, had the exact same problem earlier this year, what i did was empty fridge and freezer and unplug for a day. Did what Toppick08 and Bay Kat suggested and vacummed coils and intake filter. Like Limblips stated there is a plenum in the freezer that allows air to enter the fridge. It had become frozen open. Defrosted everything well and plugged it back in and it has been working fine since. Did have to do some disassmbly in the freezer area to get to the ice that was under the intereior covers in the freezer. Good Luck

If it is a side by side, check to see if it has vents from the frezzer side coming in to the fridge side. If there is, then turn them as to a not allow so much cold air in,, if not,, your thermostat is probably toast.

Are you sure that 1 is the warmest setting and not the coldest setting?

Curious if anyone has any information or suggestions !I've got a Hotpoint fridge (which is made by either GE or Whirlpool, can't remember), 8 years old and anything that is in the back of the fridge freezes. It's always had this problem, but seems to be getting worse. I also have an old side by side that I use for "overflow"...mostly milk since we go through 4-5 gallons in a slow week. It is now freezing anything that's not in the door.....so I feel your pain. I figure the old one isn't worth fixing, since we got it for $50 and the newer one is a lost cause, but I can nurse it along until I can afford a nice fridge...or a new house.

Sounds like your tstat is stuck. listen behind it and see if you hear the compressor running; if it is,take the knob off the stat, hold a screwdriver up to the shaft of the stat and give it a rap with a heavy pair of pliars or even a hammer but use caution, it will break. A lot of times if you can get the contacts to open up it will be ok but at the same time they may not close again.....

You have any mechanical ability? Simple to change and you should be able to buy it for under $40. I would think. Probably have to drop the cover from the bottom side of the evaporator, remove the knob(pull it straight off), remove the 2 screws holding it in place and just pay attention which way the sensing buld tube is routed and make sure you put everything back the same way it came off. Bigest thing is making sure the new sensing bulb is where the old one was and make sure when you go to put the cover back on you don't have any pinched wires or anything that can get in the fan blades. Send a pm if you have a questions if you change it yourself. Scale of 1-10 on difficulty in changing it yourself, 2-3.
