I am cleaning out a shed to try and make room for winter storage.

I was gonna drag this out to be burned.
I opened the drawer and look at the mortisen work! (sp?)

Can someone tell me the age or period of this kind of work? I'm clueless.

Can't help you with the age or period, but I imagine that under all that paint, there's probably a nice piece of furniture.

I was going to say the same thing, strip it and refinish it. I'll bet it'll be beautiful.

I forgot to explain that it was in the kitchen of my home when I purchased it.

I was gonna toss it then but my sister talked me in to keeping it.
I have been moving it from place to place and everytime I move it I contemplate burning it.
Then I open it up and can't bring myself to it.

The home I am in, as some may already know, is as "old as dirt". So I'd venture to say the dresser has been here awhile.

Toxick fumes :jameo:

Excuse me? Easy? I ain't falling for that ol' line.

How do I begin? What kind of stripper and where?

Seems I have tried this before long ago, and I have tried to block it out.
If the can has an old guy named Formby's on it, I ain't doing it. :yay:

I agree, that blue paint looks like it will come right off.

I got paint stripper once and it had no fumes and was very safe but it took the paint right off, about 3 layers of white paint from a piece of furniture I had and the wood underneath was beautiful. I can't remember what the stuff was called is was years ago.

how old is the house?

Good question. Front part (addition to home) is dated on flue as 1934.
Back part (original home) sets on summer beams, has ballon flooring, cross beams that are notched and pegged instead of 2x4 stud construction, and roof trusses are notched and pegged.

I have no clue as to how old, really.
It is something I started to research and never followed up on.

Here ya go. Evidently called a "Knapp joint", because it was made on a Knapp machine, made by the Knapp Company. Dates the piece pretty far back, though, between 1870 and 1900. Seems that 1900 is when machinery that could accurately make good dovetails was perfected, and so the Knapp went away.

A very old drawer, in a very old chest of drawers | Sandal Woods – Fine Woodworking & Cabinetry (http://sandal-woodsblog.com/2009/10/11/a-very-old-drawer-in-a-very-old-chest-of-drawers/)

How did you find that!
Thank you for taking the time to find that. what key words did you use?

Pin and crescent, hum?

Very nice to know. I surely cannot burn it now! I should be hanged out back if I did.

Guess I will need to bring it in now...It has been out in one shed or another for 10 years.

j/k

I can't let it leave here now. It came close to it's demise on several occasions. When me and the guys built a new shed and we were moving items, they wanted to smash it, but I wouldn't let them.

It's funny, I'll be the first one to ##### when someone throws something like that out, and I have damn near done it myself.

Pin and crescent was the refined search, trying to remember what my "ranging shot" was.....maybe pin and mortise, or peg and mortise? Dont recall, really. Whichever, it brought that second term up, and used that, filtered the results through the old discrimination circuit in the noggin, and wala. Took about 1.5 minutes, tops.

Yeah, but that far back, that might not be a real accurate thing. Could be that record keeping was just getting organized down here, and that house waasnt brought into the system until the addition was built.

Might not be that way, but pegged structural stuff seems a bit older than 1930. I could be wrong, no telling without more to go on.

What I really need to do someday is go and visit Julia Forbes. The CPA in Mechanicsville. Some of you may know who I am talking about.

She is, to the best of my knowlegde, the oldest of nine siblings who grew up here. She would have to be pushing 70.

I am just lazy about these things. Anyone notice the trend?
