My hubby wants the Nike Sumo Irons for Christmas. I know absolutely nil about golf.
So I found some on EBAY. NEW! But I don't understand what all the gibberish is that follows the posting.
NIKE SUMO HYBRID IRON SET 5-AW
Description Shipping and payments
Item specifics
Club Type: Iron Set Brand: Nike
Condition: New Shaft Material: Steel
Dexterity: Left-Handed Gender: Men
Flex: Stiff
What does 5-AW mean?
Or for that matter another listing says
Nike SQ SUMO Irons 4-AW Graphite Senior New In Box. This listing is for a set of Nike SQ SUMO irons 4 thru PW, and AW.
What does PW mean?
Any help is appreciated. Is there a reason someone prefers graphite over steel? Is one better than the other? What does "senior" mean?
Blah. I'm so confused. I really wanted these for him as a surprise, but I'm beginning to think he may need to chose them himself.

Means they're new, steel shaft and for a left handed man. Not sure exactly but the 5-AW is for 5 irons and a wedge(like for a sand trap) . Hopefully experienced golfers will help. :howdy:

5-AW means you are getting a 5 iron through a Gap Wedge. So you get 5 iron, 6 iron, 7 iron, 8 iron, 9 iron, Pitching Wedge, Sand Wedge and AW(Gap Wedge)
Unless your hubby is a senior citizen I would stay away from the other set the 4-AW since the shafts are designed for slower swing speeds(Senior Flex)
The other set appears to be the better option for most golfers. Couple of questions come to mind for you.
Is he left handed? Cause the set above is for a left handed golfer.
Check his current set and see what types of shafts he uses now. Are they graphite or Steel? Is the flex(labeled on the shaft) a regular or stiff shaft? The set above is steel.

I'm glad you guys pointed out the left handed thing, I had completely skipped that out. He is right handed and only 32 years old, so good to know that the senior is actually referring to a "slower" swinging golfer. He currently uses steel. But I don't know if that is by preference or price. :) I will check the flex. Thanks for all the info. It's really helping.

I recommend involving him in the club/flex/etc selection. Clubs are fitted tehse days to swing types, speeds, player type.
If you put a picture of the clubs in a box and let him unwrap that on Christmas morning the surprise is still there . . . and he gets to select his clubs. Win/win.

That's a good idea! If I did that he wouldn't recognize them as golf clubs either, he would just think I got him another shirt. lol:buddies:
Thanks for the tip!

Yup. :buddies:
I would avoid buying golf clubs on ebay because there are a lot of fake clubs on there (you would have to request the serial numbers and contact nike to make sure they aren't fake). The two auctions you listed are no good for the reasons mentioned in the previous posts. Also the first auction is a hybrid iron set so the 5, 6, and 7 are hybrids (Nike Golf Clubs: Nike SasQuatch Sumo Squared Hybrid Iron Set 4-7 Hybrid, 8-AW with Steel Shafts (http://www.golfsmith.com/products/NK1220/Nike/SasQuatch_Sumo_Squared_Hybrid_Iron_Set_4-7_Hybrid,_8-AW_with_Steel_Shafts)).
Like recommended before, I would suggest the custom fitting also.

Good point, there.

i'd also recommend going to NightHawk, Golfdom, or one of the other golf stores around the area and get fitted. Once he finds out all of the specifics, shaft, length, loft, etc. and finds the clubs he really likes, then you can shop around for the best price. Alot of the time when you get fitted they will offer you a discount on your clubs.
I've gone to Golfdom in Tysons the past two times, my friend went to Nighthawk in Crofton. Both have outstanding service.

I might be a little leery of this ad. I don't know why the person selling them had to indicate that the shafts are new if the whole set is "NEW" as indicated under Condition.

You don't have to be scared of Ebay...I have bought softball bats, a putter, and a replacement 3W on there.....I just look for Power Sellers that have 98% positive feedback....those are the people you know won't screw you...

I bought hubby a Sumo driver last year for a STEAL at Myrtle Beach Golf Shop. They beat any price I'd seen by more than $150.
Hubby recently purchased a new set of clubs - can't remember the name of them, but they're the same ones Tiger uses. So far he really likes 'em!!
