With the proliferation of members advertising other websites on SoMD.com, I can only assume that there is no longer a prohbition on this practice?

If it's a commercial or competing site, they can't advertise. But like a Moms site or a hobby site, I see no harm.

The hunting sites that come on here and join just to post links back to themselves or advertise their site are competing sites in my book. After all, SoMD does have a section on hunting.

How about the scanner site that joined recently and keeps posting stuff that is really just barely disguised advertisements for their own site? Doesn't SoMD have a scanner section?

So I can put a link to The Baynet as my signature? Not that I would. I don't care for their site. Their forums are a JOKE.

Well, they're a commercial AND a competing site.

I guess I don't see the big deal about hobby and special interest sites. Those are going to be specific to that topic and typically don't allow a lot of chit chat type stuff, or discussions that don't pertain. So their audience is going to be very limited, and it's unlikely they'll pull people away from us.

They certainly are not going to pull me away from here. I just find it the height of rudeness for them to advertise their site on here. Kinda like setting up a krispy kreme sale outside of dunkin.

Those are my thoughts too

Let me ask, hunter what do you do for a living? I think if you were a small business owner your sentiments might be a little different. Go ahead and tell me how if you owned a small business how you would be different and do everything right and pay for all your advertising no matter if it was just dropping a link on somebody's website.

No, I am not a business owner. My wife is. She never advertises on here unless she has a classified ad in place. However, I do frown on people stealing from friends of mine, and I do concider DJ to be a friend.

JoeMac,
Are you the AMSOIL dealer that has a paid advertisement on this forum? If not, I am sure that that advertiser would love to see your signature.

Dropping a link here and there is one thing. If somebody comes on and says "Who's a local AMSOIL dealer?" and you came back with a "ME!" and a link, that'd be one thing. However, you are running an ad with every post you make. That is just rude to both the owners of SOMD (the FREE to you forum that they could be charging to access) and to the business owners that have paid for an ad on here.

Wow, that seems a little stiff. Are you allowed to have your own web site? The only stipulations Amsoil has is that you are not allowed to display prices in mass media, ie internet. I have not called them to see if eBay is OK or not. You are also not allowed to call yourself, or have your url address "Southern Maryland Amsoil" or anything else that makes it look like you are a branch of Amsoil. You must establish yourself as an independent. Other than that they are more or less open.

Another thing, knowing that I'm not going to get banned for a simple signature I am more likely to come back and use this forum than one that would warn me for that act. I will also tell other people it is worthwhile checking out. I did some blatant spamming on another forum and they erased the posts immediately. I never returned.

I feel others might have a similar sentiment. Think about how it might help the forum before you go trying to cause trouble. I also think that it might turn into paid advertising in the long term and isn't that what a successful forum is about, long term use. That is my plan anyway. I don't have $250 a month to put towards a single advertising source, but I will in the future. So, as long as I stick around this forum it will turn into paid advertising. If I was banned or reprimanded for something I thought was petty, I wouldn't return and would tell others not to waste their time.

Nice example. however, we are not advertising a business. It is a community resource and is directed at a type-specific website with no direct competition for somd.com As stated in the beginning, somd.com does not offer what we are offering, therefore it is 2 different products aimed at different markets. I'm sure SMST would have been canned long ago if were infringing on the toes of the SOMD.com site, but, fortunately the site is operated and monitored by folks with a good head on their shoulders.

OK, I could have sworn I saw that SoMD.com did in fact offer a section where we can talk hunting, post hunting photos, etc. Since you are not advertising a business, that means that you do not have sponsors for your fourms, correct? No paid advertisers?

At this time SMST has no paid advertisers. SMST is simply trying to offer a resource to the local hunting and sport shooting community. It appears that some members here can not see this. Your time has been appreciated, but, it has come to decision time that we should move on to more relevant subjects.

It appears that some members of the SMST can not see how this wrong to do. Your pointing this out to us has been appreciated, but, it has come to decision time that we should move on in an attempt to keep people from realizing that what we are doing is not fair to SoMD.com.

The whole point of this thread is about NOT advertising in the forum. If you don't have anything productive to add to the thread keep your comments to yourself. Since you don't know anything about sales, a good sales person doesn't waste their time on people who are not prospects. A serious prospect would know some background on the product. Laziness is not checking it out on your own.

You do realize that when you act like a douche, it reflects poorly on that link you put in your signature...right? And since you have proclaimed an affiliation with an SOMD advertiser who is "ok" with you stating such affiliation, you might want to double-check how you behave on your account. Lame comments like this one can only reflect negatively on both you and anyone you're publicly affiliated with.

As such, neither of you will get my business because of this post. Have a great day :howdy:
