Which is the better investment? or which burns more calories?

IMO, a treadmill is a better investment. However, you have to use it right and that means RUNNING on it. Walking will do nothing. If you want to shred pounds and burn calories, you must run.

The elliptical kicks my butt everytime. Chasey is right though, if you get a treadmill you have to run on it..but everytime I get on the elliptical I get off totally exhausted. I think it's best to get whatever you will use on a consistant basis...try them both out with a free gym trial membership or friend's houses..and find out which is a better "fit" for you.

I think so also. I was walking 3-6 miles per day, but now having lost a substantial amount of weight, the walking isn't enough.

So, if you need that running level of activity, but say have knees that are a fine soup of cartilage and fluid, then maybe an elliptical is the right choice? Much less impact than running, correct?

I can only speak for myself but for me I have run up to 5 miles a day and the only thing that changes how I look is calorie restriction. I'm walking (mostly on a treadmill) 3 miles a day doing light workouts each day (except weekends) and look better then I ever did spending 2hrs a day in the gym which I did for over 20 years. The thing I like about the treadmill is I don't have to run I can walk if I want. I like ellipticals also but on a nice day I can't elliptical outside.

I feel the eliptical is harder. I start "feeling the burn" a lot faster then the treadmill. I had bought one 3 years ago and hardly used it cause it hurt my knees. If you get an eliptical definately get a great quality one. It is worth the cost (mine was a cheap model). I have a treadmill now. I have had it for a few months and hardly use it. Thats just because Im lazy

The elliptical will be less traumatic. However, if you still want to run, get some GOOD running shoes. Nike Bowerman's are awesome!

I have bad knees so I use the elliptical. Why not get a gym membership (a lot of gyms are having a introductory special) and see which one you like better before making the big investment. You can also take different classes to help up your weight loss. That is what worked best for me. I usually do a few spin classes a week and try to get in at least 2 or 3 pump classes a month.

Treadmill, Elliptical, P90X, whatever.........
Any will work. Just depends on if and how you use it.....

Whatever works for you; a caloric deficit is the only way to lose weight though. I'd recommend adding anaerobic exercise as well as this will have more of a lasting impact on your basal metabolic rate.

I would imagine an eliptical is more effective if you use your arms as well.

Worth considering; the elliptical is easier on your body, me thinks.

No pounding...
I must admit I have spend ZERO time on a treadmill, but hours & hours on an elliptical: I suspect the range of motion is great for joints--low stress but it gets my heart going. make sure if you buy one: it has a great record of digital endurance: the last thing you want is spotty/incoherent data when you are trying to keep records of distance & time!
(repairs are a drag!)
Right with you Larry!

I would imagine an eliptical is more effective if you use your arms as well.If you use it at a fast running type pace it is effective. Ran for too many years and now with both knees shot and feet hurting running is no longer an option unless I want a knee replacement. I don't. So the eliptical works great.

I don't run and hate the treadmill, it's boring. I take aerobics type classes and find they really help me.
I had to switch gyms because mine closed and am also just getting back into some classes after spraining my ankle. I was taking a couple of aerobics classes (dance/spinning) a week and a toning class at my old gym.
Today I took a pump class - first time back at anything in 3 weeks - oy! But I have to baby the ankle, so it had to be low impact. Tomorrow I'll try a spinning class if I'm not hurting too bad from all the lunges I did today. :faint:

Were you running on a treadmill or the streets? If you say treadmill, I am going back to the eliptical.
