Or do I have to hit a certain post count/membership length, etc?

Didn't see anything in the rules.

They are not allowed in all forums, only some of them. You can reduce it and attach it in "manage attachments" when you make your post. :yay:

Yeah was trying to avoid that, kind of weird no pics in the sports forum, thanks.

You have to attach them. Website guys get bent when we link to them because it eats their bandwidth. A big site doesn't mind or even notice, but the little guys can't afford to pay for it.

right click on the image and do the save as to your hard drive.
then resize it if needed to make it fit.
I use VSO Image Resizer to do this with my photos. I size them down to a 640 X 480 and it works well.
The software is a free download here (http://www.vso-software.fr/products/image_resizer/)

Vrai, I hope its ok to link that software here, I figured since its a free download it shouldnt be a violation as far as advertising goes.
if Im wrong, feel free to delete this post and slap me a couple times.

It's fine because you're linking to the site and the download comes from them. If you were linking directly to the download, I'm pretty sure we'd hear from them soon.

actually in vbulletin as an attachment it goes to the db which not only increases bandwidth but server load.. I suppose it's possible that it's been modified to go to the filesystem (which I doubt considering other forum options) but would still increase bandwidth

there are many many public uploaders that are fine with hotlinking and personally, I typically use my own server

if linked from an outside source it's a lot more friendly to bandwidth and server load.. but a chance of not existing awhile later

I'm very well versed on this forum software and I suppose the web as a whole

However, if an image is attached, it goes into *our* database and uses *our* bandwidth. If linked, it's using the host site's bandwidth and many small webmasters mind this very much, especially since we are such a high traffic forum and one image can net hundreds of views. Enough that the host actually sees it in their referring site stats, which is how they know to find and fuss at us.

If posters would only link images from hosts that don't mind or have given permission, that would be fine. But obviously they don't and it becomes a problem.

Just like quoting whole news articles or other material from outside sources. This is copyright infringement. And while some authors don't mind, many do and will not hesitate to write and tell us so.

I'd think that the majority of people wouldn't mind hosting at hotlink friendly sites such as photobucket, etc. As a matter of fact I SAID that attaching here used up your db and bandwidth, so not sure why that's an argument here.

In fact, most images posted at major forums are from public friendly hosts such as them, flickr, etc

I'm not saying allow me to post an image from obscurenonamewebsite.com .. but to disallow images wholly seems very very very strange to me, having run some very popular forums out there today

you must be talking about the computer forum where you're defending a 500 dollar device that can't multitask

I'm not pompous, but I don't put my opinion out without knowing what I'm talking about either

Oh you're pompus, and thinking I'm defending something that I have no stake in just proves that you are.

Shawn

pride is a stake that you've seemed to show

but there really isn't any correlation between those two points

either way let's leave that argument for the appropriate forum

Damn you are full of answers aren't you. If you don't like the way the forums are runs then leave. You always have to have the last word and try to prove you are a computer god when it just makes you seem arrogant.

Always? These are ongoing discussions, I didn't revive it, you guys did.

Thanks for teaming up though as part of the clique, sure takes a lot of you it seems.

I offered a suggestion man, go tell everyone else to leave too. I didn't throw a hissy fit that the policies weren't changed but you and your buddy sure are enjoying teaming up on me here and in the ipad thread. Pathetic man
