I'm looking into renting a cabin in the Great Smoky Mountains for 7 nights/8 days. Never been...so tell me whats a "must do". Also, if you have any reccomendations on cabins, I would appreciate it. Would like 3 bedrooms. TIA

Wow, you might want to narrow down the area abit. Are you looking at Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg, Chattanooga or someplace near Johnson City in the north east corner?

Hubby and I went to Pigeon Forge for our honeymoon in May. We had a GREAT time. We rented a cabin through Sugar Maple Cabins. There are dozens of cabin rentals though.

Good Question!
I orginally planned on using my timeshare, but for 7 nights in a condo, it's going to cost approx. $950. (in Gatlinburg).
I figured for a few hundred more, I could possibly rent a cabin, with some mountain views.
I know, for sure, I want to visit the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. So, maybe a cabin close to that? Dollywood is on our list too.

Gatlinburg is right outside the National Park and more in the mountains than Pigeon Forge. We were in Cherokee (NC side) this summer and drove over the moutains through the park to Gatlinburg. There is a KOA with cabins and I'm sure there are others in the area. Do a google map or something for Smokey MTN NP and look for cabin resorts.

We rent our cabins through Gatlinburg Cabins in Gatlinburg TN (http://www.mountainchalets.com). We are going back to Gatlinburg in July. This will be our third trip. We always go to Dollywood. We also like to take atleast one steam train ride. This year, we're doing one through Knoxville TN Family Fun Tourist Train Ride Birthday Parties (http://www.threeriversrambler.com/). Last year, it was Great Smoky Mountains Railroad: Bryson City, NC (http://www.gsmr.com/). We also went river rafting. That was a blast. This year, we're going tubing. Ripley's Aquarium is always a cool place to go. We took a helicopter ride last year but it was only a short one. The longer trips were out of our budget.
There are some great ideas listed in my previous thread http://forums.somd.com/travel-vacations/182992-rafting-gatlinburg.html
I hope you enjoy the area as much as we do. We've even decided when the time comes (in about 15 yrs, we're going to retire down there).

We drove by that tons of times last summer when they were building it. It looked awesome even in the building stage. We will definately be going to it this summer when we head down there. It will be neat for the kids to see the "before" and "after" of it because everytime we'd pass it, they'd say "there's the titanic!".

jaclyn, curious here by this statement "I orginally planned on using my timeshare, but for 7 nights in a condo, it's going to cost approx. $950. (in Gatlinburg)."
Are you saying you have a timeshare in the area and it is still going to cost approx. $950.00 just curious, figured the timeshare was paid for and everything else extra..

Yes, the timeshare I bought into is FloridaSportandRecreation.com
To go to Gatlinburg TN, for 7 nights in a condo will cost apprx 950.00.
This timeshare is different than most, I believe. It doesnt give me one week a year, free at a specific location. It offers discounted lodging. I would have saved $1,000.00 by booking through them for the condo. The condo rents for apprx 1900.00. Seems pricey!

Well... we went to Cades Cove. You were right. It's gorgeous. The Abrams Falls hike kicked our butts. On the way back down, I told my husband to just leave me there because I couldn't walk anymore.

We're going back to PF/Gat this year.. and I've been telling them we should go to Cades Cove.. this is part of the National Park? Can you drive through the park and Cades Cove? or do you have to do - I see theres horseback riding.. hayrides... biking.. but can't you just drive around the park??? and then hike the falls?

We drove through Cades Cove and would pull of to the side if we wanted to get out and look around. As we were leaving, there was a long line of cars stopped, looking at this giant elk that was laying in a open field.
We drove thru cades cove and loved it. We were stopped looking across the field and there was a baby black bear cub playing in a tree. A man got out of his car with a boy about 7or8 and took the boy across the field to try and catch it. I was so scared we would witness their death, Hubby told me to just keep videoing it because the police would want it as evidence if the momma bear charged out of the woods. They got almost to the baby and it jumped down and ran into the thicket of woods. Boy and his dad slowly returned to their vehicle. I think people just do not realize that they are in the wild with wild animals and not a zoo where you are protected by fences.

Cades Cove is awesome. We go to Gatlinburg every November for our anniversary. We actually own 3 timeshares there, lol. We always go to cades Cove at least once during our week long stay. As others of said, pull over and let others drive by, enjoy the scenery. There are a few hiking trails along the way, at lest one leads to a waterfall, kinda rough walk. There are lots of cabins and other structures to look at. Another little known excursion is in the middle of downtown Gatlinburg is off of Historic Nature Trail. Go up the hill and keep going, you'll enter the Smoky Mtn Park, keep driving and you'll see more cool places. If you need more ideas, just ask.
Thanks! well.. theres 3 couples going.. 1 couple has 2 kids 5 & 2.. we've done the aquarium and dollywood already.. wanted to do other stuff.. so I mentioned hearing about Cades Cove and Parrot Mountain and the Titanic Museum but not the kids would do good in the museum.. and I think the 2 couples (myself included) going down early before the couple with the kids - I think that early night we're gonna try to do the Hatfield & McCoy dinner show.. I've done the Dixie Stampede before.. any other suggestions? I know one of the other woman didnt' get to go to the xmas place - over by the Inn - and she loves xmas so I know she wants to go there.. and I'd like to go over by the Old Mill again but.. suggestions?

We like to go to Bubba Gump's once to eat. Food is better than average but the atmosphere is well worth it. Something new is 2 moonshine spots in town. Both offer free samples :buddies: . Any place in the Smoky Mtns in great. Enjoy !!
