I would say, learn on an acoustic. It will strengthen your fingers. An electric, will be easy after that.

Like BF said, get a book. Plus there are resources on the internet. When I was learning, I got a poster of chords, and practiced them.

I'm self taught also. I've been playing for about 18 years now. What got me started was learning tablature. Got a CD I liked and then found the tablature book that went with it. It gave me instant gratification by learning the songs I really liked. If it's some kind of music you like it will seem like a lot less practice and a lot more fun. You can go the route of getting a "learn how to play guitar 101" book or something like that(and theres tons of 'em), and yes there will be alot of good info in there, but you might feel like you're spinning your wheels. Whether you get an Acoustic or Electric, that again is up to you and what kind of music you like. Electric is easier on your finger tips initially. (Lower action on the fretboard) You'll see what I mean by that once you start playing. I hope some of that helped, oh and the best 1st move is to actually go and start learning. I started on electric. Just because that is what I liked.

As far as lessons. Check out YouTube. There is a ton of guitar playing things on there. Anything from how to play a certain riff to how to read tabs. And it is free!!

ITunes has free lessons as well.

I play classic rock and country and blues. Mostly rhythm and a little lead guitar. Been playing for 20+ years off and on. Just looking for people to Jam with in the Southern Maryland area.

Assuming you have no music background, as for lessons, I suggest taking lessons and learn the basics of guitar; how to fret properly, how to play notes and chords properly, tuning, basic guitar theory, basic music theory, what intonation is and why it matters, basic guitar care, how to change strings.

A few lessons will get you off to a good start. From there, there is no limit to how much you play and practice.
