I know this belongs in pets, but I really want this to be read by as many people as possible.

I found a dog today on the corner of Bull Road and Newtowne Neck Road. He is a "coonhound" (Per Animal control)I believe. He is unaltered, and doesn't look too well taken care of. I saw him lying on the side of the road and being the sap that I am, I stopped to pick him up. He is the SWEETEST thing I have ever seen, great with kids.

Unfortunately, due to previous plans, I am going away starting tomorrow, so I had to call Animal Control. They told me he has 6 days for his owner to claim him. Then, who knows. I would hate to see the "worst" happen to him.

If you know anyone who is missing a dog in that area that looks like a cross between a rottie and a bloodhound, have them contact the St Mary's County Animal Shelter. It break's my heart to have to let him go.

He does sound like a pure breed Black and Tan Coonhound. I do know there is a breeder in the area... I will see if I can contact him and see if he is missing any of his coonhounds.

OH THANK YOU!!!!

This was SUCH a sweet dog. I felt sooo bad giving him to the Animal Control.

(And I CERTAINLY couldn't have just left him lying on the side of the road!)

My friends dad is asking his group of coon hunting buddies.... did the dog have a collar on??? (by chance?.... maybe no tags but just a collar?)

I saw a picture of a Coonhound on Tri-County website for stray animals. He is approximately 7-8 years old. Poor boy!

What happens if his owners don't claim in, can people go to the shelter and adopt him?

I think if the owner doesn't claim him and they test him to make sure hes not aggressive they will put the dog up for adoption and then you can go and adopt the dog.

I know this is dumb question, but I honestly don't know. Is there only the one animal shelter in Hughesville or is there one on St. Mary's somewhere? The OP said the dog went to St. Mary's Shelter, but the only one I've ever heard of is the one in Hughesville.

I just looked on the Tri-County Animal Shelter site and I don't see the coonhound on there. So maybe his owner got him or he was adopted already.

He was there when I called this morning. His picture is still up. Middle section about 9 rows down. He is listed under their stray section but today is day number 6 for him so his stray time is up. He could be put down any time now. Please call. His intake number is Intake ID: 70368. Their number is (301) 932-1713. Tri-County in Hughesville.

Great! Are you looking at adopting him? You can put an application on him now and can start the process once his stray time is up. I really doubt his previous owner is looking for him. He probably got too old to be of any use to them so they abandoned him.

We are going to go look at him tonight and check him out. Said if we were interested, then we could go ahead and pay our fee to adopt him, he would have to wait out his time until Friday and then they do all the adoption stuff to him. We could probably get him early next week.

If this is the same dog as the OP posted about and if he is sweet, then hopefully he will love my girls and they will love him. If he isn't kid friendly, then we might not be able to get him.

We signed the papers for him tonight! :starcat: If his owner doesn't show up, then he is scheduled to be neutered on Monday and we can get him Monday evening. He really didn't look like he was 8 years old.

We have a bassett hound right now, so we know they like to sniff around, roam and check out EVERY thing. We took our 3 year old with us and we went in a fenced in area with him. He was more interested in "marking" everything around and running, than in us, but we know he's been in a small cage for a couple of days and was happy for a little freedom!

Our bassett gets along pretty good with other dogs now, so hopefully he will welcome the new addition. We plan to introduce them to each other slowly.

We asked what would happen to him after his "stray" period, but they just said he would move to the adoption side and didn't say how long that period was. So I don't think he was on the short list there, but I'd rather see him running around with us than hanging out in the kennel. Plus they had him in the quarantine area because they were short on cages in the Stray and Adoption areas.

While turning onto Keech Rd from Rt.6- one night it was dark and there was a coonhound walking really slow and then just stopped in the middle of the road. I almost hit him.

I stopped when he stood in the middle of the road, and noticed he had a blinking red light on his collar.
I got out checked it and it did have a contact number. I called the owners- who were "less than pleased sounding" and said, "Oh he got lost last weekend when we went out hunting in Bryantown."

Bryantown :yikes: that's quite a distance from Keech Road.

So, the owners asked to meet me them halfway with their dog- I chose a public well lit place, and met them at WaWa in Charlotte Hall... When I gave them their dog, I was expecting them to be happy, but instead, he just picked the dog up and dropped, I mean literraly dropped, the dog in the back of the pickup truck and said thanks and rolled out.

I hate to see people show little emotion to their animals.
Anyhow, just goes to show that doesn't have to be in the area, so it's a good thing you posted it on here.

congrats to the one who adopts it.

Yup.

Crazy thing is, then they wonder why the dogs don't measure up, or return when they should, etc. A single dog that has a good strong bond to, and trusts the owner, will do the work of 10 "Stick 'em in the pen till we need 'em" dogs.

Used to see this all the time doing the protection dog trials... handlers who had top notch bonds with their dogs almost always took the day, the dogs were obviously enjoying what they were doing, and returned to the handlers with bounding enthusiasm, for instance, rather than head down and nervous, waiting for a correction.

Hunting is no different. If the dog enjoys the handler's companionship, it will enjoy it's job, and do that much better.

Hope everything works out and you're able to adopt him. Sometimes after being at the shelter, dogs get upper respiratory's or kennel cough. I'd have him checked at your vet. Usually it's not a big deal, sometimes they need antibiotics. Good luck, thanks for helping the old boy!

:yahoo: So glad you're getting him!!

We have an 8yr old dog and the only issue he has is he sleeps more often.
Especially after running hard, he'll crash or stop if he's wore out (which is very rare). But on the other hand he runs circles around dogs half his age.
If you keep him at a good healthy weight it helps keep them active.

Reading your update here made my DAY! It is awesome that you took the time to check him out, and the fact that you're making sure the dog is a good fit with all of your family members shows that you are a very responsible pet owner. That will be a lucky dog! This made my day.
Kudos to you, and I hope your new pet brings your family oodles of happiness!!!!! :buddies:

:yahoo::yahoo::yahoo:

(sorry I'm a little happy. lol)

I've been dealing with some sick kids :hot: so I haven't been able to check the thread here.

I'm so glad that he found his way into your ownership. He really is sweet. I was comfortable enough bringing him into my home with my 2.5 yr old AND my guinea pigs! He didn't even LOOK at my guinea pigs.

And when the little one began to cry, he whined at him, and then licked his face to try to make him feel better. Unfortunately, this made my kid cry more, but the dog looked at me puzzled (and didn't flip out) and then tried again. I think I felt worse for the dog.

Anyhoo, Congrats on the new dog!!! (oh but watch the drool! lol) :yahoo::thewave:
