Someone was driving my car and hit a curb hard enough to deploy both airbags... has anyone had this happen and how much does it cost to get them fixed? :frown:

Not cheap, check with their or your insurance carrier.

Good Luck

It is expenive. Got this from the following link. Im sure it differs on different makes of vehicles.

"Besides the damage, reinstalling air bags to the satisfaction of insurance companies can easily cost $1500 or more per bag, and most cars have at least two bags. "

Auto repair: what to do if your air bag deploys (http://www.essortment.com/home/autorepairairb_svky.htm)

and some insurance companies prefer to total the vehicle when the front driver side airbag is deployed b/c they are a pain to re-install.....

Yes, sadly I think the cost of getting the airbags reinstalled would be more than what the car is actually worth. My insurance would just consider it totalled so that leaves me pretty much screwed. Wow... I would have never guessed it was so expensive to fix airbags!

This might be crazy but to those of you that helped me out with my airbag question, could you tell me if this is possible :

Instead of paying 1500 to get them re-installed, could I perhaps buy a new steering wheel with airbag inside and just replace that!?

Im grasping at straws here but the car is fine. It has only very minor damage. I hate to scrap it just because its outrageous to get the airbags reinstalled.

I guess "someone" isn't a very responsible person.

It's always been expensive to let a deadbeat dumbass drive your car.

Why not just duct tape up[ the holes and drive it without airbags?

Heh, Yes I let a loved one drive my car and they were making a turn out of a neighborhood they had never been and it was dark, they hit the curb. I just chalked it up as one of those "#### happens" type things. Ive hit a few curbs in my day but never had the airbags deploy.

Ive thought about the duct-tape thing, at least until I can get another car but Im extremely unlucky... Ive never been in an accident, my luck would be that I'd get in my first accident with my crappy taped up airbags and end up smashing my head.

Just make sure you wear you seatbelt-that should help prevent some of the damage to your head..:high5:

Depending on what year, make and model your car is, curb impact [only] should never deploy airbags. If it's a Late Model Car, take it to the dealer for inspection.
Was the Driver or Passenger injured ?
If you bought it used, opens other discussions.
Replacing airbags alone is not advisable, you also have to replace airbag module/s. If not, when needed they will not deploy.
I would let my insurance company look at the vehicle, if it's an older car and the estimate totals out the car, buy it back for salvage, repair it at a dealer and keep it.
Buying Used Airbags, Very Inadvisable and can be Illegal in some jurisdictions.
It's Not How hard You Hit, It's How Fast You Stop=rate of deceleration deploys airbags.

Another Good Option,

Pondering: 30% Earth, 70% Race Course. Great Idea :buddies:
