Sorry Catamarans, you were better before you got the celebrity chef. The Old El Paso stale taco shells on the fish tacos were a definite no-no, and the soggy fried oysters were just a crime. It made a pretty good oyster almost inedible.

And don't talk to me about R months - we had oysters last night at Vera's that were outstanding. Apparently Catamarans didn't drain and dry the oysters before they battered and fried them, because they came out sitting in a puddle that turned the crispy batter into mush.

Waitress was nice enough but apparently there isn't an ashtray in the place, even though you can smoke on the patio. She brought us two little plastic condiment cups instead.

We also had to ask for sauce, lemons and plates for our oyster appetizer. Brought promptly, but we shouldn't have had to ask for that.

I had a caesar salad with salmon, and it was quite good but...bottled dressing? And boxed croutons? What's up with that? From a Hell's Kitchen executive chef???

I doubt I'd go back there because the whole thing was just underwhelming.

The first thing I noticed when we arrived, is that the closer you got to the restaurant, the more it smelled like the same old nasty bar it was the last time I went, years ago. And this, while I was walking across the street. The second thing that I should have considered a red flag was when the waitress said the kitchen was running behind by about 15 minutes because they were changing over from the breakfast shift. Nice to be informed, but shift changes should be seamless.

Our waitress took our order, but another waitress did all the running, bringing our food out, getting the sauces, etc. We didn't see our waitress again until I had finished what I could choke down of my meal, then she didn't remove my plate, that was clearly not in front of me, but on the other side of the table. When we got up to leave, our dishes were still there. Sorry Catamaran's, but your the biggest loser. Ha! I had high hopes going in, but found the food to be unremarkable, the service fair at best, and over priced for the food and service provided. I was disappointed.

Christy and I were there a couple of months ago (before the new chef) and it was wonderful. Had four or five appetizers between us and there wasn't a bad one in the bunch. Plus they were a lot more interesting than the apps on the menu today. I don't remember what we had, but they were original enough that we snubbed meals because we couldn't decide on the appetizers, so we got them all.

So I'm not impressed with the celebrity chef.

I miss the good old days when Catamarans served hepatitis, had sleezy bikini contests, and big bouncers would toss drunk guys onto the road.

:huggy: And did the Coyote Ugly down the throat alcohol pour, while standing on the bar.

BEST oysters I've had yet were at St James Pub!! Think we have to wait for the 'R' months to come back though.

I've had a LOT of Oysters, and I'd say they're #1 followed closely by the Oyster Platter at the Grill in Callaway (name escapes me this second).

Didn't think a new Executive Chef was going to be enough to pull Catamarans out of of the dump. WHY in the world would a chef that had a clue about what he was doing have anything to do with it?

It wouldn't be a leap for them to go back to that.

It wouldn't be a leap for them to go back to that.

It also wouldn't be a leap for them to be a top-notch class act, but somebody has to care and want to make it so. Proper training for the waitstaff and straighten those cooks out, and they'd have a wonderful restaurant.

Oh, and get rid of those outside table covers. They get sticky when it's warm out and are unpleasant. The bare table would have been better.

Was Robert working?

Was Robert working?

Doesn't matter. As Executive Chef, he's responsible for the kitchen whether he's there or not. If his cooks aren't properly trained, he has no business leaving them unsupervised.

I went there a few weeks ago and thought it was pretty good. At least better then the one and only time I ate there like 8 years ago.

We had a party of 15 people and they only had one server to help us. He was very nice but you could see he was struggling. It was still early and the place was empty and we saw 3 other servers standing around and giggling and hanging out but they wouldnt help him. Maybe we were not in their assigned area but I just felt bad for the guy to not have any help. We had to constantly ask for sauces and refills and to have our dishes removed. It took a long time for the food to be ready and it would come out spiratically. Half the table was done eating and the other half hadnt even gotten their food yet. It was very unorganized but I thought the food was ok.

We ate there not to long ago and were not impressed and have no plans to go back.

The menu is limited and pricey. Friend got the rockfish tacos and said no way was it rockfish. Robert came out and people were falling all over themselves.. told him how he lost weight and he said he is getting paid to do some diet thing but he cheats all the time :duh:

Yep. But he's touted as this big Hell's Kitchen star, which baffles me.

Went to Catamarans for the Wounded Warrior event on 24 Sep - huge disappointment. Food was OK, service was horrible. For a party of four, two meals came out, the third meal came out 15 minutes later and the final meal came out 5 minutes after the third. And the place was not crowded! To cap off a very below average dining event, it took 30 minutes for the waitress to come up with the bill, and in the end, it was wrong. The celebrity chef needs to pay more attention to how his restaurant is running, and less attention on the celebrity.

Don't get reeled in by the mumbojumbo so-called cook from a TV show. He isn't any better than most other places. The service has always been that way. Some things never change I guess. You, like many other folks had to learn the hard way. I haven't gone there in a long time, thank goodness!

I saw him the other day sitting at the outdoor podium where the hostess usually sits. I have no doubt that you could see this guy from the space shuttle.

The chef is hardly considered a star. He was a contestant on a bad game show as far as I am concerned. I doubt he had any previous training as an executive chef unless it was at McDonalds :yay:

The Old El Paso stale taco shells on the fish tacos were a definite no-no...

Agreed. I had those as well, the shells were embarrassing.

I heard that the Hells guy is only there on weekdays, that he has another restaurant he owns in NYC that he works at on weekends. Rumor, I don't know.
