We have a groundhog living in the back yard under the shed. We live in a community in Charles County. Our house backs up to a large school yard. So lots of land for wildlife.
We need to relocate the groundhog and checked with the humane society and with animal control. AC put us in touch with a company who will come out and trap the animal and make sure there are not others and then relocate it or them.
My question is this the right way to go? I thought maybe animal control would handle it and not refer it to a private company who contacted us. Any other suggestions or contacts?
Thank you for your help.

Why do you want to remove the groundhog? Why can't you just live in your house while he lives under your shed?

Yes. AC budgets are even more limited and constrained in these modern times than yours, and they have extremely limited resources. If the ground hog is truly being a pest then, call the removal company.
I have ground hogs, possoms, raccoons, and more in my yard, and I leave them be, unless they are exibiting signs of rabies.

That's funny because I discovered one living under my shed (youngster I assume as it's not that big yet) and I started feeding it veggies. So cute .....
... of course they wreak havoc on the horse fields, and I end up having to mark the big holes so the horses don't step in them but .... Chucky deserves to live too.

Yes.. they are cute.. but you have to draw a line at some point!
Several years ago a farmer asked the guy I was dating to help out with the groundhog issue he was having..... and in ONE day we got rid of over 30 off of his farm. They were effing up his crops that bad!
I think all together we took out over 100 groundhogs... :shug:
Thats alot of damage!

What's the difference between a woodchuck and a groundhog? I see them all over the place and never know which is which.

oh MY !!!! YIKES !!! We don't have any crops growing, so I'm sure that helps to keep the population down? I bet if we had crops, and we had THAT many, we'd be getting rid of some of them.

I think mine ate the flower bulbs out of the pot I was TRYING to grow them in? That's why I started feeding it vegetables. I thought they preferred to eat clover? Maybe I better go back and finish reading the link I posted earlier LOL.

sure... trap one or two...
but how the heck would you trap and relocate over a 100?
oohhh but just think if he chews your electric line... you best hope he grounds it out to fault it all the way.... or it could cause power surges or even low voltage issues.. :yay:

When this happened to us, we used a trick from Yankeeland: take USED kitty litter---that which has been urinated upon by actual cats---and pour it down the hole and wait a day for the animal to clear out. If the groundhog has babies in the burrow, she'll remove them in a hurry and you can fill the hole in, secure in the knowledge that no other critter will want to live in that stench...We used two litter boxes worth and it did the trick...

Ive had one under my shed for the past several years, have named him Pokey, he's always poking his head out looking at whats going on around the yard. Its always summer time when he arrives and then he disappears for awhile, guess he goes on vacation or something. Well about 3 weeks or so he leaves and just today he came back and brought a couple of his buddies back with him, now I have 3 groundhogs under the shed. Well 1 was okay, but having 3, is beginning to be too many. I have inquired about traps and here soon these guys are going for a very long car ride.

uh oh but where can you take them that they won't become someone else's problem? AND believe me, if Chucky leaves and comes back with more of his kind under MY shed I'll be kicking him out too ..... Hey didn't someone say they LIKED them - maybe they are willing to adopt Pokey and his friends?

Well Chucky was last seen yesterday afternoon running under the shed. Later I put out broccoli, but as of this morning it hasn't been eaten. Hmmm so now Chucky is MIA.
I assume with all the holes around he has a selection of places to go, but it seems weird that he used the same hole for a week (that I noticed) and now disappears? Oh hey, maybe he went out-of-town for the 4th holiday?

Havent seen my hogs since the dog got one of them. They are either making funeral arrangements for their family member or took off for the holidays.:killingme
Guess I shouldn't complain I know of someone who as a fox den up under her deck and sunroom, she's gotten someone to come and set traps, got 2 little ones on Wednesday and now trying to get the mother. This homeowner doesnt live out in the country, this is in a development within the town limits of LaPlata.:yikes:

There are fox in Camp Springs by AAFB - that's where one of the feral colonies used to be. Just about any quiet day you could see the fox and the cats sunning themselves in the grass by the parking lot of Motel 6. The fox didn't need to eat the cats because it ate the cat food along with the cats and was well fed.
Chucky may be back as the broccoli was gone this afternoon. Could be a different one though.

Well, we hired the company suggested by Animal Control. The man and his son came and set traps and were successful in trapping two! A very large male and a smaller female. These critters were then relocated to an uninhabited southern area and the traps are still in place to see if we have any more takers! I see this as a wonderful solution to the problem. The cost was very reasonable at $95 for one or more animals. Thank you to everyone for your help with this question.

That sounds like a great solution. What did they use as bait?
I've been feeding Chucky broccoli, carrots, spring mix greens, and kale greens. I also gave Chucky a heavy bowl with water (after he knocked over the lighter weight bowl).
Anyone know exactly WHAT they do under the ground other than hide/rest? Just wondering if I'm going to regret encouraging Chucky to stay put?

You sound like a person who likes to blame others for their problems. Try being helpful instead of placing blame. Like I put the fox out there and had it bitten by a rabid animal just to tick YOU off? oh yeah I did :sarcasm:

Too bad you don't have my cat Jasmine - she's a killing machine when she's outside ..... all she seems to want is pounce on unsuspecting critters and bring them to me as gifts. Thankfully she mostly goes after small rodents and doesn't chase down birds much.

The coolest dog hunting thing I ever saw was this guy who hunted groundhogs with dachsunds. He had radio collars on the dogs and sent them down into the burrow while using a shovel to dig an emergency retrieval hole next to the burrow. He used a radio finder to adjust the hole towards the dogs. When he would break through into a tunnel he would just wait until the dogs pushed the groundhog out and they would dispatch the rodent. He said he gets lots of calls from farmers, especially ones with cattle.
