If you are babysitting your grandchild, and the grandchild pulls a small tv off the stand (thank God it didn't hit him) and it breaks. Who should be responsible for replacing the tv? Before anyone starts bashing me, I was 6 feet away getting his sippy cup, this happened in 30 seconds.

The parents of the child. Not because 'it's their kids fault', but because they are the homeowners and it was an accident. If they need to, it's covered under homeowners insurance.
Everyone should just be grateful the kid wasn't hurt and forget about the TV.
EDIT: I should say, whomever is the owner of the house/tv, it may not be the parent's house.....

Why wouldn't you just replace it yourself? I understand a reaction to blame the parents and demand they pay for it. it is their kid. They are responsible for him.
However, is that the kind of grandparent you want to be? Give them a bill for the cookies he ate? Charge them for the gas you used taking him to the movies? Take a babysitting fee out of their Christmas presents?
Ideally, they will offer to pay, as they should and then you get to be magnanimous and philosophical.
I've got very different types of grandparents in my larger family and I can tell you which ones are most enjoyed and most desired to be around and which ones are thought of as Scrooges with a sort of unpleasant edge about them and get invited to less family stuff.

This was my thought as well. Man, if Gran had sent a bill to my Mom for everything I'd destroyed in her house, Beej would still be paying it off.

Hmm....this is a good question. On one hand, it's easy to say you should've been watching the child better or had a better baby-proofed area if you're going to babysit. On the other hand, if the kid was older and say, hit a ball through a window, the parents should pay.
Maybe you could split the cost with the parents?

A small CRT TV can be replaced for a few bucks. Go to Vintage Values.
I just tossed a 13" at the transfer station because it's esentially worthless

Well, as I say, the parents of Holy Terror the TV Killer should, at the very least, offer and when grandparent says 'Don't worry about it' you take them to dinner, fix the gutter, do something a little extra. What have you.

I agree that the parents should offer on their own, but it is your responsibility (unless it is malicious). The next thing is to teach the child to not touch things that aren't his. People shouldn't have to "baby-proof" their homes. The children should understand what is off limits. Trust me, it does work!!

I say the kid who destroyed the TV should be responsible for it. If he can't afford it, then sue his ass.
Not bashing, but if you agreed to babysit a small child, then technically you are responsible for replacing the TV...
I say "technically" because ... who cares? I assume that everyone involved is family, yes? I'm sure that splitting the bill, or just someone taking the initiative to replace themselves is not out of the realm of possibility, before everyone puts their attorneys back on retainer?

I would hope as a grandparent you're older than say 26..
I would also hope as a grandparent you made good choices in your life, and are probably in a better place financially than the young parents of the troublesome little tyke.
If they are a normal young couple it could be a serious hit to the budget to replace a $200 TV.. for the grandparents?? Skip a night of Bingo..

I say bill the grandchild. I know, I know, he is just an infant now but he has years of earning power ahead of him. Fill out a bill with a reasonable interest rate on the unpaid balance and deliver it to his guardians. Be sure to provide a receipt when he foregoes the ice cream cone or gumball and drops off some change at Nanna's toward his debt.
In the end they will all thank you.

Glad your grandbaby is ok. If it were my son who broke the TV, I'd pay for it whether the TV was in my house or his grandparent's house (not sure where this incident took place). I wouldn't expect my Mom/inlaws to pay for it just because my son broke it while they were watching him. As a parent, I'm responsible for his actions until he's old enough to be declared legally responsible. So Mom & Dad, fork over the cash. :killingme

Tough one - generally I would say that parents are resposible for actions of their child. However if it happened on my watch I would feel responsible to chip in for replacement.
Accidents happen, everyone should be happy that child wasn't hurt.

I guess the kind of loser who was laid off from their job and is on very limited income...the 2 year old big tv stopped working 2 weeks ago and resorted to using this small one for the time being until they can buy a new one when they get back to work. If it weren't for the situation I would never even question myself on what to do. Sorry, I can't just pop out $100 right now for a small tv to put on my stand let alone one to mount on my freaking wall.

I agree. He's being taught what to touch and what not to. He pretty much knows (he's 20 months). This was one of those freak things, I do watch him constantly for this reason. I don't like "babyproofing" either but do put up things he could hurt himself with.

If all 4 of my TVs stopped working right now, I wouldn't even notice, that's how much TV I watch.
If my grandchild was here and broke something, I'd just replace it, if it was at the parents home, again, I'd replace it. The child drinks from a sippy cup, so must be young, I'd chalk that up to my fault for not watching close enough and deal with it and just be glad he/she wasn't hurt.

That's true too, my homeowners policy covers if my daughter were to go to someone else's house and break something, but then the deductible would probably be more than a small TV is worth. Now if she broke a Ming vase, it's probably worth it.

I don't think I have much time for freaky sex with babysitting. I can't watch tv in the evening anymore so I'll be going to bingo everynight after I fix my hairdo and gather my lucky charms.
Thanks for the opinions on a serious note. It may have sounded petty to some but with being laid off, now is not the time to have to buy anything unexpected or new. I honestly didn't want my daughter to cover it, I was "hoping" she'd get her louse ex (separated) to cover it. I wouldn't feel the LEAST bit guilty about getting anything from him.

I didn't "ask", that was why I getting opinions on how to handle it. I'm watching the child here, saving them a good $400 to $500 a month on daycare. The ex is a louse and expected everything to be handed to them when they were together. His mother never even sees the child. They both took advantage of me before. I'm keeping him to help my daughter and because I love my grandchild. I'm in a 1 bdrm condo, laid off from work, it was my only tv & I don't have a husband. I did not ask her to replace it, I was wondering if people thought they should offer. I wasn't even thinking of a brand new one, just a used one (as someone suggested) to tide me through til I get back to work. I sure wasn't expecting a LCD and HD huge one for God's sake.

I made one available, and the son came over to pick it up. Whether or not she has it now is another story.

Ok, serious.... I have a 19" tv (CRT, not HD) that you're welcome to have. Good condition.
You sir, are a class act.
As I recall you also helped out RR with a freezer issue. You're a good man Charlie Brown.

I agree. Such a nice guy although I'm beginning to wonder if GWguy has a hoarding issue? He seems to have a lot of extra stuff around his house. :killingme

My grandfather was what we called a mild hoarder, which is probably why I'm the type to toss/recycle/donate constantly. He wasn't totally outta control but still had an issue. When he passed, it took forever and a day to clean out his house. Really sucked but at least we found a bunch of great paintings he had done over the years. :yahoo:

Nah, I'll handle this.
Dear GWguy, I will be sending you a PM of the many things I want for my house that are just sitting around your place taking up space. Once you give them all to me your domicile will be clutter free.

Yes! I sent you a PM thanking you. The grandbaby is happy to see Sesame Street again! For the record, that wasn't my son. It's my daughter's "ex-husband". I wouldn't claim him to be my son (can you tell I don't like him?).
Thanks everyone for the opinions and offers to help. I never expected the offers and it's so appreciated.
