:hmpf:

Until they began naming hurricanes after men as well - around 1978 they began using men's names - there was an old joke about why women's names were used, namely that otherwise they'd be "himmicanes".

But the use of women's names really only came into being around WW2. Prior to that, they had really stupid and cumbersome means of identifying storms.

Admittedly, referring to a storm by NAME has distinct advantages to designating it by latitude and longitude.

It can still vary a bit e/w at this point, and in fact has pretty much hugged the west edge of the predicted cone (initiatially it was predicted as some 500 miles off coast, no we are looking at 125 to center.) but no, it isn't going to bull it's way west through the trough. Even a STRONG trough isn't a guarantee of deflecting a CAT 5 Hurricane.

Accccctually. Yes, is is a guarantee. As powerful as a cat 5 may seem, it is still obedient to the whims of our atmosphere. It responds and moves within limits just as any other storm, and those limits are dictated by the atmospheric conditions around it. COULD it turn and make landfall? Sure, the rtough is big enough to allow that. WILL it? Well, you have to give it a reason to... an atmospheric reason, or one that is very strong in the water (like a heat knot, which is what they think caused Charley to skew off to the S, but you won't find these in the waters here).

The reason for the debate where and what it was going to do, was that the speed of the system pushing the trough, and the jetsream which shapes it, was all in flux. Now that everything has come together the info is a lot firmer. :yay:
