View Full Version : Fly or drive?

This fall; 4,000 mile round trip through the Southwest.

14 days

Fly means rent motorcycles at destination. More time at destinations. But, then I'd have to suffer the degradation and humiliation of ariline travel. Flights and bikes, $1,500. 18 hours getting to, sitting at/on and around airports and their flying cattle cars.

Drive RV and pull trailer means $1,500 in gas, take bike(s). Probably 5 days, maybe 6, on the road.

Drive pick up, pull trailer. $750 in gas, a couple hotel rooms, figure $1,000. Maybe cut drive time down a day.

Yeah. I voted skip it.
All the :bs: @ the airport including the strip search. Pay for everything, even the 7 peanuts you get on the flight :bigwhoop:. Pay to rent bikes. Pay for hotel. Food.
Are you trying to single-handedly trying to boost the economy?

Just stay home. ride your bike till your heart is content, and your ball are numb. And watch western movies on the TV, with beer in hand and your own bed to sleep in.
You know how when you go away, you're always so glad to get back home..... "there's no place like home".... well ....

I'd take the pickup and tow my trailor. I hate the long driving, but I hate airlines worse now. Plus you could stop anywhere along the way for little bike ride breaks.

$150 times 2.

That makes gas only $300 for the bike, plus hotels. Call it $800 or so?

So, dollar wise, best idea. However, I just don't know about being on the bike that long. 800 miles a day in an rv is one thing. Pull over, lay down, food on demand, etc.

I think that long a bike ride is too much for me. :drama:

Same same on a bike..

I've slept on picnic tables.. you can a pack a moto-camping tent and stay at campgrounds or rest areas. or just on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere. They even make a tent now specific to this, even has a "garage" that you can keep your bike out of the weather, and away from prying eyes.

You can drive as little or as much as you like.. and set up camp for the night.. Explore the local area from there.. or just sleep, eat and relax..

There's an entire group of people out there that do just this all the time, and specailty supply companies out there that make items just to ensure your comfort.

See if you can rent a toy hauler. Maybe not cheap, but if you total up all the other options, it might be reasonable. That way you've got a space to sleep and a place to put the bikes and gear.

Me, I'd drive the RV.

You can stop and go anytime you want during the day or night, and you can leisurely travel, seeing all the sights (like the worlds biggest ball of twine, Iowa's largest Frying Pan, The Mall of America, Stonehenge 2, Fossil Cabin or the Smokey Mountains park) and drinking up all the Americana that's available between here and there.

Tell Tom's brother to come here and spend a few days riding the Skyline Drive/Blueridge Pky and hit all the overlooks on the southbound side down to Deals Gap.
Ride the Dragon and the Cherohala Skyway (http://www.tailofthedragon.com/), play tourist and get some Dragon T-shirts, pins, patches, stickers and a hat then take a few days to ride home and hit all the northbound side overlooks.

That's funny. I am going the other way. I LOVE flying, enjoy the heck out of it and I used to not much enjoy driving much further than a couple hours. Now, I DESPISE going to the airport, the searching, the lines, the whole freaking thing, not to mention baggage checking and retrieving and I pretty much enjoy driving. I went to NYC and back yesterday. Little tired but, all things considered, pack your bags, have all your stuff with you, I can see doing 700-800 miles in a day.

I would rather drive any day. Half the fun is seeing all the sights along the way. Back in 2002 we did a trip out west and back and drove 8000 in 8 days. We went to the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Hoover Dam , the Four Corners, Mount Rushmore etc. We had an awesome time and have lots of unforgettable memories. The only time I would consider flying would be if I was going to one place in particular and just wanted to hurry up and get there.

So, it's like dry as hell and stuff and that shiny, hard as a rock stuff used to be grass and like, rolling down hill to start the YZ is like, you know, not as straightforward as non man made global warming conditions and what not and, like, I still fly through the air with the greatest of ease when I wash the front out. Perfect landing on my back, shorts, t shirt, un laced t shoes (all my normal dirt bike safety gear). The second time around went MUCh better!

Actually, it was more like washing the ass out, didn't pull in clutch fast enough after giving it a good pop, slides out, try and get on top of it, front caught something and THEN I got light weight. Got up, looked around to see if anyone saw it, no judges, no points, no credit, laughed my ass off.

Drive.
The small towns you fly over and miss are well worth seeing.

fairly easy run to Grand Canyon can be as short as four easy days.

If you dont mind Hotels (I have a thing against them) you can spend less on the trip than if you pull a trailer. My experience on the cross country pulling tells me that I need to have around 1500 + for just fuel. But I still think its worth it.
You can rent a smaller pop up style camper if you dont already have something (I have no clue what you own) and then put the bike in the bed of the truck to be used when you get to where you want to use it.

Ive been across the top of the country to Yellowstone and through the south and up through Utah/Colorado and back now.

Currently making plans for a San Diego trip in June to go to the Wild animal park, Sea world etc.. and if I have time I will drive up the coast 40 miles and see my brother and nephews.. oh and his wife.

In short, Drive, there is a great big diverse country out their that needs to be explored.

Yep, and thanks to my Dad who had summers off as a teacher I saw a lot of it.
When it was till uncrowded and pristine. Anyone who doesn't make a trip to the Grand Canyon is really missing a breath taking experience. If you have the time hike or ride by mule down to the bottom. It's like taking a trip though time.

the whole entire area from Grand Canyon and on through Utah up into Colorado is something that everyone should see at least once before they die. a plane would not be able to do that trip justice.
I took the truck off road in the Canyonlands and made it all the way down to the banks of the green river (butt clinching ride) I have been to the top of the highest paved road in North America. there is no way that you can describe or even show in a photo the beauty that is that whole region.

Flying sucks anymore. My wife and I use to fly three or four times a year, and it just kept getting more and more burdensome and intrusive. Now we haven't been on a comercial airline in almost two years.

If I were you, I would drive across, see the country from the road. Something that I always wanted to do. Drive your truck or RV pulling the trailer, either one will get you their, although the RV will do so in comfort.

Better than an '80 Chevette for sure.

I've made the cross country drive five times. Pretty much in a hurry three of them but took my time twice. I'll do it or at least part of it again, but this time I am looking at 5 hrs day driving and the rest checking out spots of interest. Be nice to have a toy hauler trailor or R/V so I could take an M/C and little boat or canoe.

I'm guessing you are refering to renting a boat or bike. Most places I would be moved to do that would not have anything like that within 100 miles.
