View Full Version : Sad tale, simple solution.....

I recently met a nice lady, who asked me about riding, seeing as I had my gear with me. Told me she had just sold her bike, seeing as she never got a chance to ride it, she was just too busy. I have heard that a few times, and it saddens me. And, IMHO anyway, there's a simple solution I shared with her. The key is not to view riding solely as a recreational activity, but as an everyday transportation activity.

Try and work motorcycling into your everyday life, equip your bike so you can run errands on it, be that by installing luggage of some kind, or by having a shoulder sling pack that can hold a few things. Ride to work when you can. just ride. Me, I get about 1 recreational ride for every 15 or so "working trips". That would be a helluva lot less riding if I only rode when I had free time.

If its an activity you love, find the time, work that time into your daily life. Well worth the effort. Time spent riding is good for your soul, two-wheeled chicken soup:buddies:

I ride to work most days. Right now is the perfect time of year for it. I have a back pack to carry the essentials to work.

Haven't yet figured out how to get 15 bags of groceries on the bike.

Used to envy my husband getting on the bike any time he wanted and taking off - leaving me sitting here with three little kids.

Can't say I don't get some perverse pleasure out of leaving him behind now.

I cant do 15 bags, but I can do about 3-4 bags in my top case. When I get the side ones mounted, I should be good for 10 or so.

I do more riding back and forth to work than anything else.

I take the bike to work most days as well. The only problem is that a 5 mile trip in the cage seems to always add 30 to 40 miles onto my bike

I think most people simply aren't comfortable riding in rush hour traffic to begin with, especially the mobs of people who got a bike specifically for weekend group rides who then found that our endless leisure options and need to get chores done started eroding riding time to the point where they weren't riding enough to maintain the skills and confidence necessary to want to ride.

Lots of people like it. Not everyone loves it.

Like to ride to work, but haven't done it much this year. First part I felt I should be as careful with my life as I could. Then I needed to carry so much crap for appts., etc it was not doable.

I think I am ready to start again.

Don't care much for group rides, I'm more of a, "hey I've got a free hour, kinda guy." Most of mine sadlly have been to get to the grocery store or some other little errand. Still beats driving though. It takes three bungee cords to hold a 20 pack of TP to the passenger seat rest, by the way.

I rarely ride to work, it's only a mile. It's just too much hassle to suit up, fight the traffic on 235, and un-suit for one mile.

However, it makes the time I do spend on the bike even better. Great for clearing your head.

one can be easily fitted to most bikes, and can be removed in a second. See that red button? That's the dismount button. Literally, press that, and the case comes right off. Only thing left behind is a flat plate. I leave mine mounted all the time, but my bike is like a bulldog, and I use the case four rides out of five.

Nice, but I usually don't need much, dinner and maybe some little stuff. Frequent trips are the key. That I don't mind at all. My stuf I've been having to haul to and from work is dwindling too, so I may start up again. Weather is startring to cooperate also. Also I am not worried about a few days in the hospital any more. No one to worry about but me that can't take care of themselves.

:eyebrow: I won't mention this to Zman

I've riden twice since October of last year and have plans to ride once more next month....just not enough time(work, school, kids) to sleep let alone ride

I won't get rid of the bike though....it's paid off and one day when I find my dream job and don't have as much kid responsibility, I'll be riding it again

How was the bridge ride?

How was the bridge ride?

The leader had never done the route and didn't know it very well. Took off with 11 bikes at 9. First piss break was when I lead a mutiny 2 hours later. Took this kid (30 ish ex mil) something like 20 minutes to figure out he'd lost his team and come back. Of course by then he and the other 2 bikes (youngins) had to go.

A really nice mountain climb and turns was lost due to the fact that most of us were clenching butt cheeks the whole time.

From there, it was nice except for a couple of gravel roads that miffed some high end bike owners. We saw 6 or 7 bridges, two major different designs. No helmets, low speed, scenic as all get out.

pics; Perry County Pa Covered Bridge Tour - The Central Maryland Motorcycle Riders (Germantown, MD) - Meetup (http://www.meetup.com/motorcycle-4/calendar/14732403/)

Not sure if you'll have access. No cost to sign up.

Lunch was really nice in the middle of nowhere. Name is on one of the pics. Nothing special, just good food, lots of it and fresh cut fries which always scores with me.

From there, me and the South Mountain He Man Woman Haters Club (and wives  ) took off for Mountain House by way of Cowans Gap ( MUST ride!!!) to chill for a bit, drink a few cocktails and flirt with the bartendresses. Then, we hit Mikes in Greencastle (put that on your list, everyone!) for some ice cream and then a killer twist ride home with a fab sunset and fantastic dark ride the last 20 miles. Just an awesome day. 240 miles. Left M' Town at 8. Home at 8.
