Steny Hoyer rips Stephen Colbert's appearance on Hill (http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0910/42723.html)
By JOHN BRESNAHAN | 9/26/10 1:23 PM EDT Updated: 9/27/10 7:52 AM EDT
An irate House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said on Sunday that comedian Stephen Colbert should not have appeared before a House subcommittee last week, blasting the move as "an embarrassment."
"I think his testimony was not appropriate. I think it was an embarrassment for Mr. Colbert more than the House," Hoyer said during an on "Fox News Sunday." "It was not appropriate... What he had to say was not the way it should have been said."
Hoyer also said that there would be no House vote on extending the Bush tax cuts before Election Day, and he took several shots at the GOP’s “Pledge to America,” suggesting it would lead to dramatic cuts to the Pentagon budget and other federal agencies.
Hoyer's position on the controversial Colbert appearance was in marked contrast to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), who said it was fine that Colbert testified before a Judiciary subcommittee on immigration.
"Of course I think it's appropriate," Pelosi told reporters on Friday. "He's an American, right? He comes before the committee, has a point of view, he can bring attention to an important issue like immigration."
"I think it's great," Pelosi added.
so is Steny playing to the room, or genuinely upset Colbert was allowed to appear ....

What an idiot Pelosi is.......like any of the rest of us American's wanted to show up and speak in front of the House, we'd be allowed?
I don't like Hoyer, but he is correct, it was an embarrassment. For Colbert and for anyone on that panel that just sat there and let him talk.
I do believe Hoyer is trying to win over other's that disagreed with Colbert, but he's still not getting my vote!
Somebody is reading the polls.

Congradualations to Stenny, he grew a pair and dropped Nancy's purse that he is always holding.
Yea, Nancy doesn't want to admitt the Democrats use house hearings to pull publicity stunts and grand stand, which the testimony of Colbert made an undeniable truth. Stenny knows he is past any credibility to try to take that line.
Maybe they both realize that Nancy has no challenger in San Fransico, while Stenny does, he can't carry Nancy's pursue and expect to maintain credibility when he has a real challenge for re-election.
Que the apologists that tell us Republicans do it too.

I don't know if anybody caught the St Mary's County Fair Parade on Saturday morning, but surprise of surprises, guess who was there? Steny Hoyer, complete with his secret service detail. It was hilarious. Why would he bother coming to something so beneath him when he rarely if ever bothers with anything concerning the local commoners? It was obvious, Lollar has actually got him scared. It made me :yahoo: quite happy.

I would have prefered that he still didn't take Lollar serously, which would NOT only improve Lollar's chances, but also make it so much sweeter if Stenny loses.
But, agreed, if I had been there, I would have felt the satisfaction as well.

I don't believe Steny and Nancy are that close. After 2006 he made a small play for the number 1 spot in the house for Dem's and she responded by trying to replace him as the number 2 guy with her own guy, the late Murtha. They have always had the tensions that is probably not uncommon when dealing with a party's number 1 and 2 people.

Murtha had too much baggage, Nancy was a fool to even consider it. I don't disagree about Stenny and Nancy NOT being friendly, but Stenny has usually been a good whip, sticking by his speaker, whether he likes her or NOT.
It was more of a Joke about how he has defended her or stood the party line to the point of losing credibility with a good chunk of his consitituency.

Does he go to all of the fairs? I can't say I have seen him before last year, but he *was at the Calvert Co. Fair last year.
It was getting to be about 5pm & we'd been there quite a while. I kept wondering why I was seeing so many police officers in the "center" section of the fair where it looks like an intersection separating the paths to the vendor booths and the carnival. The Things and I were just about to head out towards the gate, and then we saw a group of people to our right mulling about & then saw Steny at the Dem booth. Thing2 actually hissed and wanted to go up to him and say something. I had to hold him back.

Hoyer was at the fair last year. I cornered him and complained about his town hall meeting that I went to.
He usually does a fly by on parade day.

He usually only goes to the photo op events. Ribbon cuttings, Fairs, etc. Anyplace he thinks he will have a positive reception. His SS detail is there much longer than he is.
Good thing, too.

Did he answer you? That's why I had to hold back Thing2. We'd gone to the Town Hall meeting and he saw how the process went. He was still fired up about it!

He's there pretty much every year. Nothing new. ...and those weren't US Secret Service. They were Capital Police and they're charged with the protection of the Speaker, Majoirty, and Minority Leaders of both houses of Congress.

Okay, I will correct myself, Steny Hoyer and his "protection" detail. And honestly Hoyer may come down to podunk and pose for a photo op, but that's it. He was "campaigning" Saturday morning, and I'll stick with my opinion that the only reason the high and mighty Hoyer would do something so beneath him, is that he's nervous. I hope he loses big.

...as were all the other pols. It was interesting to note that the Lollar folks in the parade were telling the folks around me how the base was increasing the debt. Considering the folks around me all work on base, I don't think that Lollar volunteer won any votes for Lollar.

Pelosi has the same baggage as Murtha did, which is one of the reasons she blocked the house ethics committee investigation on Murtha.

Anyone take note that Zoe Lofgren, D, (CA), who invited Colbert, is taking ZERO heat on this?

And even after Conyers, the COMMITTE Chairman that has oversight on her SUB COMMITTEE, urged him to leave she allowed him to continue.

Yea, it goes back even further, Tip O'Neal was protecting him from House Ethics investigations.
I've often wondered if Murtha was a the Congress's J. Edgar Hoover, having secret files of dirt on everyone. It would explain how he has survived so many ethics problems and still had support.
The guy is on tape during the abscam conspiring to take a bribe from foreign powers, BUT, he was smart enough NOT to take the bribe in the first meeting, but set out a clear plan to take bribes in the future, in return for favors from his position in Congress, from the Foreign Agent after he had checked him out.
Somehow he was the only guy to survive the abscam scandal, because Tip O'Neal burried it for him.
