I'm not happy about these pics - they LOOKED much better in person - oh well ..... maybe this camera setting was off?
suggestions?

Looks like the camera was light metering the whole image or biased to the darker areas so yes It was off for taking a sunrise shot.

Yes I think I need to check the camera settings - I do have an issue with auto-focus at times also, and the picture will come out fuzzy.

You might also play with/override/turn off the automatic temperature color corrections. Some cameras don't do well with that, produce one blue picture followed by a red one because it switched temp settings.
These I took with a "sunset" mode which enhances the sunset colors. In "Normal" mode, these would have been flat, washed out and on the blue side.

This one was taken just a few seconds after the two above, but with the sunset filter turned off. The forground stuff is fine, but if you look at the sky in the background, it's flat and colorless.
