View Full Version : Feral Cats - Catch and Release Program?

Hello everyone -
My mother had some feral kittens that showed up on her back porch and she started to feed them because she felt sorry for them, so they have pretty much adopted her. I was telling her she needed to get them fixed so she doesn't end up with 20 of them, but she doesn't have the money to do it. Are there any programs in the Southern Maryland area that will do the catch and release for ferals. She doesn't mind them out back, but they will not let her touch them and we just want to make sure that the little girl kitten doesn't end up getting pregnant and bringing more feral kittens to her door.
Thanks!!!

Sorry, she is in Charles County.
I don't know if Charles has cost-free programs but you could start with the link below and see if they have information or can point you in the right direction. In Calvert we have SPOT that offers free spaying and neutering for people that need help.
Good luck!

Thank you for the information!
For the SPOT program, do you have to be residents of Calvert - I am just wondering in case I run into a dead end.
Thanks again!

As far as I know, it's only for Calvert residents.

I's offer to help but I don't have any rescue funds right now to offer. Hopefully you can find a way to get it done through one of the other rescues.

Check with the Charles County Humane Society. They have a couple of programs to help people. ARC can help with that too I am sure.

I don't believe Charles County Humane Society has any programs to assist with feral cat keepers. Unless there is something new that I don't know about???

I feel sorry for your mother's neighbors. With wild cats being attracted to a feeding source, they must be peeing and pooping in the neighbors yards on a regular basis. I hope your mom's neighbors are patient people, and can hold out long enough for her to find homes for them.

I'm sure there are many more critters that are peeing and pooping there also. The regular assortment of wildlife make appearances everywhere, and I see poop around my yard on a regular basis, and there are no feral cats living in my yard.
So although have a few feral cats will ADD to the poop and pee - be assured all the poop and pee is not theirs alone.

Male cat spray. :barf:
I put things out for a yard sale, left it over night. Blasted cat sprayed on stuff. It didn't sell next day.

Does anyone have any ideas how I can keep the cats out of my yard? I have a privacy fence but is not doing the job.
I've tried chicken wire around the bottom 24". I have run several webs of fishing line but they carefully climb through it.
Debating trying an electric fence. Any thoughts or ideas on deterrents or repellants?
They eat next door. You know the old saying, you don't poop where you eat? Apparently that's what my yard is for.

lime. Use Lime on your grass all over (good for the grass too). AND pick up any piles left afterwards and place it in an area where you would prefer they go (for my little colony we live next to woods so that is where i throw the poop. Then put lime over the spot where they pooped every time. They will get the message after awhile. I have a colony in my yard of about 14 and we have a few incidents now and again but not a serious problem and I am vigilant about it and it works. There is nothing worse then stepping in a pile of poo in the yard I HATE IT and the DEER ARE THE WORST - CAN'T TRAIN THEM THOUGH!
For spraying - I use Nature's Miracle (not the kind for cats just the regular kind) and spray wherever they have left their scent. I have several not fixed males and we have NO problem with spraying issues whatsoever - whenever something creeps up I neutralize it immediately. You've got to let them know you are dominant in your domain.

One of the best ways to control the feral population. (http://www.sadattheclinic.co.uk/games/catskeetshoot.html) that I have found.

I would start with talking to the people next door that feed them.
If they wont listen to you then call animal control and file a complaint for nuisance animals.
If they feed them, you can prove they are pets, and if they are pets they need to be controlled and not allowed to disrupt the lives of others.
Might not make you and the neighbors the best of friends, but if you think about it, how much can they think of you to allow this to continue.
Take them to court and have them fined.
Animal control will trap and remove the cats.

I wonder if there is any correlation between immigration from Asian countries, and the populations of feral cat colonies.

I do the same as far as teaching people how to manage colonies of feral cats. Unfortunately some people just feed them. and the number of cats continues to grow, like the barn I worked on earlier this year. The feeders KNEW about TNR, had the money to do it, but were not practicing it, which is sad. Would have been better for them to STOP feeding than to feed and not do TNR.
One feeder left the area, and the remaining feeder STILL has not caught the remaining intact female and 2 males. I stopped when the funds (donations and my money) I had available to use ran out (I had 21 cats fixed), and the feeder promised to finish the job (only 3 left). In a few months a year will have passed and those cats are still intact grrrrr.
The feeder actually said that she had not seen any more kittens, so maybe that remaining female can't have any more? Is she for real? I guess she wants to wait and SEE if another litter of kittens shows up to be SURE she's still breeding? That's insane.
I'd be interested in learning what Friends of Felines is all about, so I'll check out the website.

I've seen some of the FOF folks going in/out of CCHS a few times and you all had some really cute cats. Some were feral and some not. I think my heart lies with the ferals when you come right down to it. I seem to have a knack for gaining their trust thankfully.

Indeed you likely have, we do vettings with the pet taxi every wednesday to get our cats altered, microchipped, shots and tested. Some of hte kitties arent ours, we taxi others pets(dogs included lol) at reduced costs thanks to the Pet Coalition and in partnership with the Patuxent Animal Welfare Society (PAWS).
