League of Women Voters candidate forum Oct. 18 and 25 for St. Mary’s
The League of Women Voters of St. Mary’s County, the NAACP, St. Mary’s Branch, and the Center for the Study of Democracy at St. Mary’s College of Maryland are pleased to announce their joint sponsorship of two Candidates’ Forums featuring local contested offices on the General Election Ballot.
The first forum is scheduled for Monday evening, Oct. 18; candidates for State Senator, State Delegates of Districts 29A and 29B, State’s Attorney, and Board of Education have been invited to participate. Candidates for President and the four Districts of the St. Mary’s County Board of Commissioners have been invited to a second forum scheduled the following Monday evening, Oct. 25. In view of the large turnout and interest of the public at the primary election forums, the general election forums will take place in the Leonardtown High School auditorium to ensure sufficient seating space for the audience.
All candidates are invited to “meet and greet” the public and to offer campaign literature in the lobby of the auditorium beginning at 6 p.m. The question-and-answer portions will begin at 6:30 p.m. This format provides an opportunity for citizens to submit questions to candidates either during the program or in advance by emailing info@smc.lwvmd.org.
The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan community-based politicalorganization founded in 1920, encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government. Information submitted by candidates is available at the website www.smc.lwvmd.org. Todd Eberly, Acting Director of the Center for the Study of Democracy says of the joint sponsorship of these forums by the Center, the League of Women Voters and the NAACP, “…I believe that our core missions of public service and education are well served by such collaboration.”
