Anybody else see this thing? Looked it up, SIMRAD sells boat equipment?

Broadband Radar™ | SIMRAD BR24 | Marine Radar (http://www.simrad-yachting.com/Products/Broadband-Radar/Broadband-Radar/)

Just a ham operator using that as a shell? Or is there a reason someone would mount a small radar to a cars roof?

When it snows, you won't have to scrape the snow and ice off your windshield

SIMRAD also makes mobile/marine satellite dishes. He could have Dish Network in the car.

But do they mount in that housing I linked to?

Most likely a "storm chaser".

Many are volunteers and use their own cars.

Man, if I was gonna chase storms, I certainly wouldnt choose the Mazda 3 size class:)

That actually makes sense with all the storms the past few days.

You'd be surprised at what some of these people
chase storms in! Everything from an armored vehicle
to a two-seater convertible!

Google "storm chasers" and see what you get! A lot
of pictures out there of people and vehicles and gear.

They work with what they've got. Volunteers. Not
much "budget" there....

Sears repair trucks have a similar "dome" on their repair trucks. It,s a combination GPS/communications terminal.

Those broadband radars have exquisite detail on very short (for radar) ranges. This type of radar has no elevation information and would be utterly useless to chase storms on land.
May be some low-budget research project to develop autonomous cars.

Stew, on GMR near St Marys Square. Willie, it wasnt one of those, it said SIMRAD right on it. Combined with the small assortment of other antennae, about 3-4, all mounted on a wooden framework, its not anything commercial.

The vehicle is doing "Street View Mapping".

We've run the gamit from doppler, to autonamous vehicle, to mapping
:)

I was going to suggest checking out storm chasers. I know this season one of the things a couple of the vehicles had was a small radar. In fact the question was raised to the lead for the Vortex project (I think that's who operates the DOWs) on the adverse effect all independent radar units posed for the DOW.
Unfortunately anything code be mounted in side the dome.

Nah, I've seen pics of the Googlecars, they look nothing like that.

Its my ex's car. I put that on there so I could track her.

I don't think she's noticed it yet. Shhhhh
