...donates them to churches
BARTOW --
There will be no more fun or games at Polk County's jails.
Sheriff Grady Judd ordered inmates to remove all of the basketball goals from both facilities, so he could donate them to area churches. Deputies will also give out basketballs to go along with the new goals.
"The inmates may think I'm the Grinch, but the kids at this church think I'm Santa Clause," Judd said. "Going to jail is not fun and games. If you want to play basketball, stay out of jail."
Judd is already known for instituting bare-bones arrangements for jail inmates.
A few years ago, he took away peanut butter, chocolate milk, and juice from the kitchen. Last year, Judd started charging inmates a daily fee for being incarcerated.

I wonder how long it will be before the ACLU-types start throwing out the accusations of "torture" against the sheriff?

Cool that he made the inmates do the transplanting of the hoops. I would like to think that at least one or two of those inmates would take this lesson to heart, especially at this time of year.
I suspect that this will disproportionately affect the minority inmates and be considered racist.

It should affect the minority inmates only in proportion to their level of representation in the inmate community.

He is probably just doing this for publicity. He is just a Sheriff Arpaio wannabe.
You say that like it's a bad thing to emulate Sheriff Joe.

Jail should not be fun and weight equipment should be removed also. Let them do push ups and jumping jacks! Prisoner should also be required to do state work to help pay for their incarceration! :coffee:

You give them the jobs working on highways and A LOT of civilian jobs (that are never going to be compensated in the private sector) disappear.
While I like the idea in principle, I don't like the idea of decent Americans trying to make a living being put out of work so people who have screwed up "pay for their incarceration".

If your job is so hard a prisioner can replace you, maybe the state shouldn't be paying for it then. Trash always needs picking up, walls or curbs painted, brush cleared, etc.
They can also be a$$holes.
Thank gawd no other race can.

Sheriff Grady Judd seems heavy handed to me. Common sense tells you to reward good behavior and punish bad behavior. Thus if the prisoners are acting up it makes sense to take away the basketball hoops. On the other hand, if they were acting good and there were no incidents this just causes resentment and mistrust.
If you treat people as their behavior merits they are going to learn to behave better. If you do not, then they won't behave better.
