Hollywood; THE bastion of enlightened people, of tolerance, of progressive thinking. Always telling us how to live, that we are bigots, racists, and homophobes and that THEY carry the torch for inclusivity and open-mindedness.

Cover story: Where's the diversity at the Oscars? - CNN.com (http://www.cnn.com/2011/SHOWBIZ/Movies/01/26/diversity.academy.awards/index.html)

This year there was a decided dearth of diversity in the Oscar nominations. There are no women or people of color among the director nominees, and the acting nominees are all white. Javier Bardem, who is up for best actor for his role in "Biutiful,' is a Spaniard and therefore European.

Which raises the question: Why in an era of ever increasing diversity among movie audiences is that not being reflected among the nominees for Hollywood's most prestigious award? Where are the diverse faces both in front of and behind the cameras?

They need to lower their standards and place quota's on the Oscar.

It works for the Government and Pepco.

don't watch the oscars and rarely have time to see recent releases in the theater so I'm asking out of ignorance of the facts, not to start an argument but is there someone that was snubbed in some way? were there non- caucasian actors/ directors that should have been nominated that weren't?

Unlike mistyheaded, who didn't actually read the link the OP put up, I did.

According to CNN, not ImnoMensa, there should have been more Oscars for people of color, whether or not they genuinely merited one or not. Otherwise, the Academy is just racist!

This is the year of the queer Oscars. Look at the Lesbian/Gay/Bi/Tran/Ped/Zoo themes over the past couple years including this year's The Kids Are All Right. Black Swan had a definite LGPTPZ slant throughout and that girl Viking in How to Train Your Dragon was really butch. Don't get me started on the Documentary nominees, especially Waste Land. The Greeks weigh in with Dogtooth with a little sister-on-sister action (according to the IMDB.com site) so we see it's a global queer Oscar offering. No room for racial minorities.

How many white people got BET awards this year, or Ebony Awards.. ?

How many white people will be nominated or receive BET or Ebony Awards.. ?

Apparently reading comprehension is neither your nor BOPS's forte. My comment was not in reference to the article regarding the dearth of people of color nominated for an Oscar, my response was in reference to Imnomensa's reply regarding lowering standards/qualifications etc. Therefore I have no interest in finding out if any white people will be nominated or receive BET or Ebony awards. That's a red herring.

Please stay on track when responding to my comments. I don't debate with unarmed folks and I TRY not to argue with fools. It appears that I've just broken two of my rules this morning.

You know what I detest more than taxes?, folks like you and the other two stooges who rant and rave that raciscm no longer exists yet they populate these forums and spew their racist comments while hiding behind a keyboard. The fact that you guys didn't live up to your potential and your life sucks like the huge black holes in space is no reason to put down entire races. Dude, you're white, all you had to do was show-up!

I get that there are still folks who believe as you, BOP and Imnomensa that every person of color who has a successful life and does not kowtow to you (I bellieve you say, that boy/gal don't know his/her place) MUST be the result of quotas and reverse discrimination. If that makes you feel better about your sorry lot in life, so be it.

You and your ilk are such a wasted suit of skin; I wish your mothers had swallowed.

Take care, and I hope you have a beautiful day not tainted by any people of color. Then again, that's kind of getting harder and harder to do, isn't it?:killingme

Instead of feeding the trolls, I wish someone had answered a genuine question - see below:

Some say Halle Berry got overlooked for her performance in Frankie and Alice. Haven't seen it yet so can't form an opinion. But she already has hers. Besides, she's really only half black so the memes wouldn't be happy if she was the only one to get nominated this year.

my response was in reference to Imnomensa's reply regarding lowering standards/qualifications etc.
I didn't interpret his comment that lowering standards/qualifications was a result of including minorities. I took his comment as saying it would be wrong to make considerations not on merit and true applicability but rather because of race, religion, etc.

As for the rest of the truly ignorant comments popping up afterwards... I can't speak to those.

Yet you offer nobody of more talent than those selected that may be of color.

So what you are suggesting is using affirmative action type tools to make it "More fair".

Affirmative Action, in my eyes, is telling people of color that they aren't as capable, not as smart, and maybe not as good looking as a white person. I think that is MUCH more racist than saying.. You are as capable, you are as smart, and you are as good looking, there is no reason for you NOT to compete on a level playing field. Now go out compete without race bing an issue, and on a level playing field and show us what you can do.

Affirmative Action is the most condescending type of racism, yet entire races of people accept it. Government sponsored racism.. You're black so you're not capable of getting a job, or a house or an Oscar on your own abilities, intelligence or performance so we'll do it for you.

Besides I can't be a racist, I voted for Lollar!!

Insulting me doesnt change the facts. Sweetheart.

Now tell me why Affirmative action exists.
Tell me why University Ervine in California is crying because they served Chicken and Waffles on MLK day.
Tell me why two Black panthers were turned loose by Eric Holder.
Tell me why people get upset because they didnt get an Oscar they didnt deserve, in the eyes of those doing the voting..
Tell me that Quota;s do not exist. even in Annapolis at the Naval Academy.
Prove that quota's and lowered standards do not exist.

I heard from a popular radio talk head that THAT is what the larger problem is; no big rolls were set up for ‘people of color’. The entire movie season seems to have an exclusive tone to it.

I get the Oscars are a ‘who gives a ***’ event, but the point is this cult that we call Hollywood is the center of liberalism. They are on the cutting edge of progressive thinking. They steer the winds of tolerance and acceptance. They preach this to us in their commentary, movies, and commercials. And they influence a God-awful lot of people. All these things they preach about; telling the rest of us to follow in line. They are the hypocrites we always knew they were. I hope this would convince folks the pay very little attention to them.

I would have challenged that contention. Don Cheadle, Denzel and Halle have all been active and have produced some successful movies in 2010. I wouldn't call a movie about a runaway train a winning idea but Denzel did a tolerably good job. Don Cheadle is always good in drama, action or comedy. Halle, well as I said, I haven't seen Frankie and Whoever yet, but I hear she did as great a job as in Monster's Ball. Many A-A actors have gone to T.V. which makes it difficult to also do pictures.

The article's contention deals with absence of recognition of minorities or women by the Academy. I believe that is a factor of having a handful of gold among the slag that Hollywood produces each year.

This quote, from your original source article, says it all...

"Movies are a business," Yu said. "Consequently studios are as risk-averse as it gets, and they want to go with something tried and true."

It is, at the end of the day, a business, out to make money. When there is a huge demand (or someone manages to break through with blockbuster type like Star Wars) then they will all jump on the bandwagon to duplicate the successful format. Until then, the money folks make them play it safe.

If you are looking for diversity, you'll have to look at independent studios. The Oscars aren't going to show you that. Those awards are voted on by the members of the Academy -- the very people that show up in the awards, and whose jobs depend upon their choices. It's going to take something pretty powerful in a movie to make so many of them go against the status quo in an industry that pretty much relies on playing it safe. Quite frankly -- we just didn't have any "powerful" choices out this year.

The fact that so many movie entertainers use their wealth and public visibility to espouse certain causes is totally different issue. We always have a choice whether or not to pay attention to them.

On a side note... Denzel Washington  -- I'll watch anything with him in it -- great actor & totally drool-worthy, even for older people like me!
