LAKELAND --
Feral chickens have gotten to be such a problem in a part of Polk County that a team of chicken chasers have been called in to round them up.

More than 600 of the chickens are said to be running around in northwest Lakeland.

The neighborhood legend is that some folks in the area used to have chickens in cages and let them go and over the years, allowing the population to multiply.

A company called Squeal Deal Animal Control says the city is paying it a fee per chicken to catch the birds.

"A couple of the residents told me they have had them,” Keene said. “And that they are better than the store-bought chickens. I haven't tried them myself, but they said they are."

"Organic" chickens. What ever will Frank Perdue do?

But I'm sure somebody from the health department or some animals rights group will take exception to actually killing two birds with one stone. :getit?::lol:

What kind of problems do they cause? I know Key West has a bunch and most residents seem to want them there. I do know if you sleep with your windows open down there you will be woken at dawn.

Send in the homeless with a hatchet and frying pan full of grease.

One of the many reasons the poor and homeless can't support themselves. They'd have to buy a permit, get a "chicken tag, get the chicken processed at a gov't approved facility, inspected then cooked at a licensed food preparation gov't licensed facility. That poor, homeless Guy would have to come up with $150-200 to catch and eat the chicken, and that doesn't include the legal fees to defend himself from the animal cruelty charges and lawsuits from PETA.

You could always go save those wild large black chickens that are hanging around down near the LP library.

Speaking of feral chickens, we had been seeing a rooster down the road and apparently others saw it too, and had stopped to dump food for it. Well the local crows got wind of it and well ..... now the rooster is gone but we have a regular group of crows looking for food LOL.

I hope the rooster was reunited with his home as opposed to being eaten by the local fox ...

I'll bet the lizards and pythons could take care of the chickens. Plus any feral cats.

We were watching some Nat Geo Channel show about the critters and a guy came to a house that had "Missing Cat" posters outside and caught an 8 foot python

Is there a bag limit on feral chickens?
Is there a law against hunting and eating them?
Feral chickens wouldn't last long around here.

They make great fried chicken, baked chicken, chicken soup., chicken salad, places where they are having a problem with feral chickens, must be too lazy to prepare them.

A neutered rooster is a capon. I don't want to kill it just choke it a little.
