Last year I filed jointly because I was married. This year I am filing single, I am no longer married. How do I or we claim last years return? Do we split it?

Do we split it?It's been awhile, but I think I filed married separate depending on if you were married for the majority of the year. Ask you tax guy. And divorce will ruin you credit rating for awhile. It sucks.

Who's name was on the check?

File separately. But you have to have to make sure the spouse does the same.

Edited... missed that you were divorced.

Both names were on the check. Should I claim half?

If Your Divorce Was In Maryland, It Will Most Likely Be A 50/50 Split. I Also Believe That If You Were Married For 1 Day In The Year 2010, You Could File Joint And Recover More Money. Check Into It First.

Were you married on 12/31/10 or divorced?

Actually instead of answering me I suggest you make a call to a local CPA and pay them a few $'s for a real non-forum answer.

Will filing married save you on your tax burden?
