I have two cats, a boy and a girl. Within the past 3 months my girl cat will either step in the water dish or slap the water out with her paw. Her fur is always wet and she is making a mess on the floor. Does anyone have any idea why she is doing this and if there is anyway to try and break her of this habit?

Sorry.

I had one who would pick a piece off food out of the dish with her paw. She would then eat it and would use the same paw to get a drink of water.

She also would get into the shower with me.

Current male goes into the bathtub where we have a dripping faucet. He stands there and lets it drip down his forehead, onto his paw and then licks it.

Funny creatures.

I did have one years ago who would just drink out of the toilet.

My little guy is always pulling his water dish off of the rubber mat, tipping it over and sliding through it. He also uses his paws in the dogs water bowl and splashes out water, just for fun! I have tried many different bowls and nothing has stopped him. The other night he jumped into my bath!

I have a few cats that LOVE water. I have the large Drinkwell fountain for them and they love it. Seems to cure their need to play in the water bowl.

Cats are strange with water. I keep a fresh filled every day water bowl for the two cats on a spot up high by their food. And yet..they will run into the bathroom with me to drink drops out of the shower..or meow until I fill up the cup in the sink so they can drink there. And whenever my female drinks..she twitches her paw..really strange.

One of my girls seems to always like 'fresh' water. I have a standard gravity-fed bowl and she will stick her paw in the bowl and knock the bowl until it releases more, then she drinks.

Cats live to annoy us. My sister's cat will sit down about a foot away from the water bowl, then reach out and pull it to him. She was wondering how the water bowl was moving across the floor every day.

Ugh, mine does that. We have a very big laundry room, and his food and water were in there up against a wall. Within a few days of moving in he made it very clear that he wanted his water by the door and his food on the other side of the room.

And before we moved, he would only drink out of the dog's water bowl. He'd dump his own water out, or put food in it. So we just stopped giving him water and let him share with the dog.

I forgot to mention that current male kitty has his dripping faucet and a fresh bowl of water at all times.

He prefers to drink out of my water glass which I always have nearby. :ohwell:

Gotta love 'em.

I was walking thru a parking lot today and passed a shiny, black Corvett.

You and Bob are well known for your feline hatred unless it's actually a pussy. :killingme:killingme:killingme

Stay out of the cat forum. :wench:

The Corvette owner probably loves her kitty.

Our newest loves the plastic rings off of the milk jugs and the coffee creamer containers. Lately he has been stashing them in the water bowl. I guess so he remembers where he put them, when he's ready to play again.

Did they stop splashing the water out? Those scare me as I vision the whole floor wet then and they watch it fill back up and start over.

Rubber mat with a lip does not stop a heavy stoneware bowl from being moved off the mat. A ribbed rubber bottom stainless steel bowl seems even easier for him to get off the mat. Solves problem by emptying the bowl all over and just scooting the bowl and the rest of the water across the floor.

I bought a little squirt gun for corrections and training, nope not with this cat  he just sits there and thanks me for squirting him!
Canned air is his scare button! He still thinks that electric cords hiss at him!

He has now learned how to somehow pick up the little cans of cat food out of a box and move them off the dresser. I guess he is just showing me what flavor he wants next!

I wish I could get my kitty to drink water. I have never seen him drink it in the last several years and the vet says that cats are not thirsty animals by nature. His lack of thirst is not helping his kidney values. Any thoughts anyone?

Run a tap for him in the bathtub (just a drip) or in the sink.

A cup of yours full of water and smelling of you.

leave the toilet lid up for him.

I can't even tell you the last time I saw my current companion drink out of his bowl.

Does he have cystitis?

They may not complain about drinking out of the toilet. I dont know why but mine are always trying to drink out of the toilet. Then they go into the bathtub and meow and want the water turned on. They wont drink that water, they want to play with it.

He does not seems to have the symptoms of cystitis and the vet has never mentioned it. She had me change his diet to wet food only as to decrease his protein and increase his water. I have tried the drippy water..but I cannot leave a glass or cup of water because he likes to scoot stuff off the table and watch it fall.

Heh, and my big orange doofus of a cat thought we were the only ones dealing with this also:) Best I have come up with so far is to put small velcro tabs on the bottom of a heavy plastic bowl. This sits on a slightly fuzzy mat. Not perfet, but helps. I second the question on the Drinkwell. The Le Bistro autofeeder put the kibosh on dummy harassing me for food at 0400, if an auto waterer works for this annoyance, that would be cool.

Our cat will ONLY drink out of a dripping faucet... I thought maybe it was that he liked very cold water, so I'd drop an ice cube or two in his bowl - nope. He will drink out of his water bowl if necessary, like if we leave for a night, but otherwise it's useless.

He loves water... He also like to let it drip off of his nose and lick. Also he does this odd motion with his paw when drinking out of the faucet, looks as if he is cleaning the water before he drinks it. Strange boy..... :lmao:

Often, after playing with her, I will notice that she has taken the toy of the moment (plastic tie things, mice, whatever) and placed it in the bowl.

I guess at this point, we can say to Rich: NO, there is no rhyme or reason to these things; your cat actually seems quite normal in her weirdness, so try to laugh when she does it.

My sphynx loves to drink out of the toilet. Or rather play in the toilet. We have to keep the lid down because if we don't there are dirty wet kitty prints all over. He also likes to "swim" in the water bowl and gets water everywhere. Then he gets upset because he feet get cold. We have just learned to deal with it. He really likes water.

Both of my cats like me to run the bath tub several times a day - just a little stream. They love it.

I have a Cat It (I think) water fountain bowel. It is the larger variety that has the dome on one side with the pump under that circulates the water and the other side has the water. I have the optional blue mat to go under it and this has spots to put the entier water dish assembly inside of so it cannot be moved. However, they still get splash water outside of it when they are getting crazy.

No other answer for you - they like messing with you.

Two girl cats are like their water super fresh and follow me into the bathroom so I'll put some in the sink for them. Boy cat drinks out of the big waterer in the kitchen.

The DOGS are the ones that make the mess. I have that big jug, self watering thingy and underneath it a serving tray with about 1" tall sides. They still manage to get it everywhere. They've warped my wood floor where the waterbowl is. :bawl:

Cody drips water everywhere so we just keep a thick towel (folded in half) down under his bowls. In our old house we used a waterproof doormat and it worked well, but the rubber backing stuck to the floor and I had to scrape it off (at that point we put the towel under the mat, then just used the towel by itself). I bought the cheapest mat I could find, which is probably why it stuck to the floor. It kept the water from ruining the floor, though.

Thanks Lovie. I didn't even think of putting a towel under the tray. :stupid: That would completely fix the problem. I wipe up what I can see but every time I move the entire thing to sweep/mop the underneath is wet and that's where the floor is warping.

No Spill Bowl from Petco. No perfect, he can still get maybe 1-2 sodba bottle capfuls by dint of great effort, but not the entire bowl he used to spill/splash.

No Spill Pet Bowl for Dogs - Bowls - Bowls & Feeders - PetSmart (http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2753754)

Been in use for about a month. Cat still drags it around the room, tp it over even, but the most he can do is wet a paw and walk around:)

Long time ago, cats would "fish", no kidding,...and some wild breeds still do..they "flick" a small fish out of the shallows and tataaaa..fish diner.
My Stella does it and makes a mess...I put down big towels, baking pans..and she still makes a mess...so I just live with it.
If fishing in the water bowl is her worse behavior..it is fine with me.

I had a cat that would only eat the "crunchy" food. Quite often though, she would scoop some into her water, then eat them.

I saw one of those funny online vids; a cat on kitchen sink, sticking its head under the slow-running water; and drinking from the faucet.
Just thought I'd share.

I had an aquarium at one time. My cat used to sit on top of the aluminum hood when she was light enough to. One day she fell into the tank up to her shoulders. Funny as H*ll until I had to get the water outta the carpet.

Have you tried fashioning a "tray" out of aluminum foil? Won't leak.

 I had one that would turn on the kitchen facet, play in the water and leave. It wouldn't have been so bad if he turned it off when he was done playing but when you wake up in the morning hearing the water running, you gotta worry about the bill.

I decided to TRY to water in some horse mix seed in part of the pasture in July. Well, let me first say I am used to being on well water okay?, not public water as I am now .... I used the sprinkler and I watered that seed every day for weeks ..... moving the sprinkler every hour or so to cover a good sized area (yes even at night) and I somehow ended up with a humongous water bill !!!!!

Nature may water the seeds from now LOL
