Usta not care. Late last summer some 50 year old teacher hit a curb near me, got tossed, hit the ground, lid popped off and the second landing kilt him dead. Ever since then, I care about my chin strap.
Still don't know how the hell he ####ed up other than just losing concentration for a split second. It was a nice, wide open spot, kinda like slipping and falling and hitting your head in the bathtub...when you're not even in the bathtub. Freaky spot. I ride over his skid marks every time to ward off the demons.
And remind myself about split seconds and chin straps.

Every ride a new set of odds. Like a coin toss, each one is a new 50/50 shot. My strap has a snap button for the slack. I occasionally forget that, but never the chin strap. Maybe that comes from so many years as an aircrewman, you just get the habit of donning gear pounded into you.
What sort of helmet was it, Larry? 3/4, I assume?

Oops.
Did not know the man. And I don't know about the helmet. I know a MX helmet will come off if it ain't strapped. Ask me how I know that.

I think his point is; some helmets, even if strapped, may come off at first impact. Head and helmet hit pavement, helmet goes one way, head goes the other.. head takes second impact sans helmet.

Riding buddy of mine knows a bunch of EMT types and he asked them "So, bike accidents, what do you mostly see?"
They said "Hands, forearms and elbows and, if beanies or 3/4's, lotta chin damage."
As a safety first kinda guy, I never, and I mean EVER wear a 3/4...while I am wearing shorts and tennis shoes.

Partially that, Bob, but also on my "if it aint full face, you should be okay with losing a portion of yours" kick:) Just like a boxer, leading with your chin is a bad idea in my opinion.

That's ok, I get crap all the time about my dress pants or jeans I wear when i ride.
I got the Jacket, the gloves, the boots (that I don't wear if I'm not coming onto base) the nice full face helmet, but just can't get myself to wear riding pants.
The ATGATT radicals are always on my case..

Thats where I fall down to is the pants and shoes. Dockers when I am riding to work, with casual shoes. Off work, its jeans and my old flight boots.

On base you can wear anything for a jacket and pants. A long sleeve t-shirt fits the criteria or even a dress shirt (with or without tie), dress pants, jeans for the legs but you MUST have over the ankle boots to get on board, and full finger Motorcycle gloves..

Just got the YZ out for a lunch time spin. 6 kicks. Hasn't been started since probably November??? Holy hell. The only difference between the YZ and a hand grenade is there's no clutch on a hand grenade. One bad ass motor scooter!!!!! Get in the pipe and KAAAAABOOOOOMMMM!!! My riding is definitely improving. Now, instead of being scared to death and constantly behind the bike, I am now pretty much with it and very, very respectful. Just more clutch control keeps the monster under wraps. A bit.

I love it when some dewd is spouting off about safety and helmets and jackets yet wears jeans or dress slacks.

I try to avoid going on base with my low shoes, but occasionally a meeting pops up and I do. They dont even look at me funny. I used the same logic. My legs aint never gonna be purty, and I can hobble while a knee heals, but the head and torso, those ya need.

Around late March early April they issue all the gate guards the "rules" and tell them to enforce them.. Then after about 2 months of harassing bikers coming on base they'll put them aside, then they'll forget all about them until the following April.

You are supposed to have bright colored and reflective tops on. I see it ignored all the time. Only time I got hassled was for my fingerless gloves. I mean, really, so I lose my finger prints, so what? I think I can keep from trying to grasp pavement anyway probably because it would hurt a lot. Pretty sure it wouldn't hurt my nail polish either.
