Bought a 1989 S-10 Blazer from him with 60K on it in the 94-95 era. At about 210,000 miles, I put a used engine in it, and it went until 230,000 miles when it went into retirement/donation when we bought the 1999 Blazer from Tom in 2002 or so.

That one was interesting. Salesguy told us it was not an auction vehicle like a lot that he sells are. This one was a consignment from a friend of Toms. Sure it was, I thought, but it was in great shape, with 65K on it. About a week later, at a wedding, an older couple approached while we were outside and I was smoking a cigarette standing next to it.

They said it looked just like the truck owned by friends of theirs. When we said we had just bought it from TH, the wife remembered that the couple had mentioned having TH sell it for them. Was nice to get the honesty check. Still have the truck, its only gotten up to 110,000, since we have done most of our driving in my cars.

so, yep, I have been happy both times I have bought from there.

I'm not gonna bash any dealer, but anybody who knows how truly disgusting the used car market is would never buy a used car unless you personally know who owned it and how they took care of it.

If you don't know that, you're rolling the dice and deserve what you end up with.

My sympathy goes out to the folks that have to buy used cars because of their financial situation though, because they often end up as victims.

I've got a warranty on this p.o.s house.

And if it doesn't get fixed, I can turn to the Maryland Home Builder Guaranty Claim Fund for up to $50,000.

Who are you going to turn to six months from now on the first oil change when you find out that the oil drain plug was cross threaded into the pan and the threads came out with it?

We bought daughter's first car from TH (a Honda Civic - I can't remember what year) and she drove it all through high school. No problems/gripes from us on that one.

Exactly how much energy does it take to remain so negative and contrary? It is unfathomable that a healthy mind could survive in such an environment. Do your family members drink heavily or perhaps use drugs?

..."I know one man of really brilliant parts who has not the ability to manage a business of his own, and yet who is absolutely worthless to anyone else, because he carries with him constantly the insane suspicion that his employer is oppressing, or intending to oppress, him. He can not give orders, and he will not receive them. Should a message be given him to take to Garcia, his answer would probably be, "Take it yourself."
Tonight this man walks the streets looking for work, the wind whistling through his threadbare coat. No one who knows him dare employ him, for he is a regular firebrand of discontent. He is impervious to reason, and the only thing that can impress him is the toe of a thick-soled No. 9 boot. "...

You can't handle reality.

Auto's and life are easy to understand.

You buy new with a warranty and don't have worries. For that peace of mind you make payments.

You have money and buy used because you're a cheapskate and you're able to throw money at whatever needs fixed.

You buy used and make payments, then beech every time something breaks on it in Internet forums.

Or, you're poor and end up in auto hell when you live pay check to pay check and a broke down car ends life as you know it.

Have the car checked out no matter who you buy it from and use Carfax. Tom's been in business a long time so I'd guess he's better than most.

I am under the impression your piece of mind consists of 2 brain cells, one cell is dedicated to basic life support functions, and the other exists to annoy the first.
If a vehicle loses greater than 50 percent of its' resale value in the first 2years of ownership, why wouldn't it be prudent to buy it at the discounted rate? If peace of mind is really a priority, then spend the extra money on an aftermarket warranty. (I think you can get those for dishwashers too)..

Oh Jesus, now you want to talk "after-market warranties."

I've got one more brain cell than you have.

We're arguing about opinions. I've bought almost exclusively new vehicles my entire life. I've never broke down. I've never had to sit on the side of the road. I've never walked out in the morning and had the vehicle not start.

But I sure have listened to everyone I know that buys used beech and moan constantly about this needs fixed and that needs fixed.

We have purchased any variety of new and used vehicles over the years probably 25 or 30 in all, proper use and maintenance go a long way.. My dealership concerns are with the personal integrity more than the product, No one can say which vehicle will run for 200k miles or 2 miles before something lets loose. Caveat Emptor. I want to know the PERSON is on the up and up and not malicious or clem like.

Then go meet the dealer in person and pass your own judgment instead of getting it from the forum shrinks.

If you had three brain cells you'd realize that used car dealers role the dice on what they buy to sell you in the same manner that you do when buying it from them.

None of them intentionally sell someone a piece of chit.

The chances are good that 90% of his cars are good cars, and those are happy customers.

To get a feel for the owner and dealership talk to the 10% whose cars weren't perfect, that didn't operate as they should have, and ask what kind of support and how helpful the dealership was in getting issues resolved.

EVERYBODY does a great job when things work like they are supposed to, it's how great they are when they don't that matters.

Or you could take a chance and just hope you are one of the 90%.

Can't say, I think I've read a few gripes. You buy a used vehicle you take chances. You don't know how the previous owner(s) treated it or maintained it, for one. Doesn't matter who you buy it from. A dealer would be my last choice though. Too much markup.

Son brought truck from him. Saw carfax when we bought it and no accidents..everything good. Son switched insurance company year later and they did carfax and it showed it had been in 2 accidents in the past. I don't know what carfax he showed us but it wasn't from the truck he brought. Don't do it.

No, run your own carfax check. Even that won't show everything. Just what has been reported.

They have plenty of mark up at any used car dealers. I have bought two cars there and have been happy with the cars and Hodges.

You can buy from a private and get dicked as bad as at any dealer. It's a roll of the dice buying used.

I buy only used vehicles. Lots of them over the years (I have something like 11 right now..so its not like they go anywhere after I buy 'em).

My kids went through high school with Audi Quattros..both of the cars started out at 150,000 miles. One died at about 220K because a large tree fell on it. The other has passed 300K and I gave it to a friend who likes Quattros..still running strong.

I had one of my old Broncos die on me once returning from a hunting trip because it dropped a valve...and another old truck I built threw a rod climbing Tennessee mountains towing a heavy trailer. That's about it for 'road failures' for me in the last 15 or 20 used vehicles and 30-plus years of driving them. I can live with that; I see newish vehicles on the side of the road all the time.

I'm quite happy to let others eat the major depreciation from new, while I take the rest.

My next one will be new unless I find a good deal on what I want. It will be the last one I buy, I think. I'll keep the old ones as they have served me well. Plus it's nice to have a spare or two.

Of course the missing part of this conversation is the question of how critical is a good running vehicle to your job?

And what will happen to you at said job if you fail to show up?

You don't miss missions in the military without serious consequences.

Sister bought a car there. Within a week the check engine light and airbag light came on. When she went back to ask them about it they said they couldnt fix it.
Just with any used car lot, its up to YOU to look over the car and make your decision.

Went there years back with my wife for a car - this was maybe in 1999 - and found one we liked. Got the speech, nice car,no problems, etc. I stressed we wanted something with no known mechanical problems, they told us the vehicle has been thoroughly serviced. Took it for a test drive and broke down in the middle of the road. IN FRONT OF THE F'ING EARLY BIRD. I pushed it into the parking lot, called the dealership to come get us. He then tells us that it didn't overheat,it shut it's own engine off as a safety mechanism. Lying jerks.
