I think our washer is on its last leg so I've been researching washers - pros, cons, reliability, etc. I'd also like to get some feedback from you folks on the various types and your experience with them. We still have the "old fashioned" top loader w/agitator but I've noticed that a lot of the "top rated" top loader washers are the kind w/out an agitator. Do any of you have that type and, if so, how do you like it? Generally speaking, what's your recommendation on type of washer to go with next -- front load, top load w/out agitator, top load w/agitator? Are there any specific models you would recommend or suggest I avoid? About my only criteria at this point is large capacity (I do a LOT of laundry). Thanks for any feedback!

When we moved into this house, they had a Cabrio, which was a top loading HE washer w/out an agitator. I thought it would be wonderful, but it really sucked. It left white streaks all over our clothes. We replaced it with a GE front loader and I love it (well, as much as one can love a washing machine anyway). You can stuff it full and everything comes out so much cleaner.

One hint, we priced this washer online at Sears (who had the best price), printed it out and took it to Home Depot. They not only match the price, but give you and extra 10% off. It does have to be the same exact washer, but works out well when you can do that.

Yeah I got one without the agitator too. Don't like it much. Good capacity is why I got it.

I have one of the Frigidaire front loaders (from Sears) and haven't had any issues with it so far. I've only had it about a year and a half, though. Gets the clothes clean. Tries to eat baby socks (putting them in a mesh bag fixes that). Did have to turn the spin cycle down, but I have my dryer stacked on top of the washer.

The matching dryer works fairly well also, has one of those sensor things that tells when the clothes are dry but it isn't always accurate. Sometimes have to run it a few extra minutes.

I have a Whirlpool Cabrio and it is OK. I don't get the white streaks and it washes clothes just fine. The con's are that sheets and towels seem to get tanled up and twisted more than one with a center agitator.

Other than that it works great. Clothes come out clean, uses less water, spins them near dry and reduces drying time.

I've got a pair of Kenmore that are now 17 years old. Wash and dry great, only had to replace a belt in the dryer last year.


Of course, now that I said that, both will die a horrible death.
